Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Beastiary

Back at the village, Sevi greeted the group.

"Welcome back. Did all go well?" She asked, her expression expectant.

"Naturally! All 16 Mint Lions near the border have been eliminated.

The bear matriarch smiled before signaling the others to prepare the group’s rewards.

"Thank you so much, Lord Gravana. We Ore Dwellers wouldn’t be flourishing so much without your help. Please, take some of our best ores this time around."

<You have completed your mission! Return to your throne to turn it in!>

"Grahahaha! It was nothing. After all, you’ve provided a great training ground for my disciple."

When Gravana mentioned his disciple, Sevi’s eyes fell upon Alchemy and her cohort.

"Ah, yes, of course. Thank you for your help, Miss Goddess." She bowed.

"Thank you for providing this learning experience, Mrs. Sevi. I’ve grown a lot from it." Alchemy smiled, returning Sevi’s bow.

A glint of surprise appeared on Sevi’s face. She didn’t expect the self-proclaimed Goddess to be so polite.

"Your rewards will be prepared shortly. If you wish, you can wait in your lodging or explore the village, as small as it is."

"We’ll do that then," Gravana answered.

Alchemy’s group returned to their temporary cave abode while Gravana left to do something else.

"So, how was the harvest? What level did you girls make it to?"

"I’ve reached the max. I can ascend into a True Hero whenever." Nera answered.

"I-I reached level 18!"

"Not bad. I got to 20 myself. We accomplished our goal, so this was a fruitful outing if nothing else." Alchemy hummed.

"We’ll get our share and then head back. Hold off on ascending until then."

"Yes, Mother Goddess."

’I’m glad everything is turning up. Hey, System. Is the bestiary working?’

<Notice: The Compendium is functioning. Due to the errors in the system, 100% accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Information about known discrepancies will be shown as question marks.>

’That’s fine. Open it up.’

In front of her, a large book appeared. It had a leather casing and an artistic rendition of some sort of earwig on the front as its cover.

"Woah... The real thing is heavy." Alchemy mused as she grabbed the item.

It was at least four kilograms to hold.

Alchemy opened the book and flipped through the pages. After about 20, the rest of the several hundred were empty.

It was filled with information on the monsters and animals that Alchemy had seen and the plants that had been identified.

She skipped past all the flora for the time being and focused solely on the fauna.

<Gale Wolves>

<Average level: 2-9>

<Inclination: Carnivore, Neutral, Aggressive>

<Habitat: 1st Layer of the Forest of Ghosts and Ash.>

|<Large wolves that can gather air inside their body and fire it out as a projectile. How they gather air and how the projectile works are both unknown..>

Seeing how weak the Gale Wolves were on average compared to Gravana was honestly comedic. Alchemy tried not to laugh but failed, letting a small chuckle escape.

’Their elites were pretty strong for their environment, but what the heck is Gravana doing with them? Is he not training them despite being his own subjects?’

<Assassin Eagles>

<Average level: 50-60>

<Inclination: Carnivore, Chaos, Aggressive>

<Habitat: 3rd Layer of the Forest of Ghosts and Ash.>

<Birds capable of completely silent flight and powerful reinforcement magic.>

Seeing the Assassin Eagle’s entry, Alchemy suddenly stopped laughing.

"It was half of their average level, and it’s what made me take my first casualty."

A Chaos inclination was a little different from the others. Chaos meant the creature’s moral compass was unreadable, even by the mighty system.

It was a bit of a surprise to Alchemy, as typically only creatures from other worlds had such an inclination, but it wasn’t a big deal. She wouldn’t have to deal with the Assassin Eagles for a long while.

"W-we got off rather lucky, didn’t we?" Sapphire said as Alchemy showed her the book.

"That’s a way to look at it, yeah. We got good rewards from it, at least."

Alchemy turned the page.

<Knowledge Seekers>

<Average level: 5-13>

<Inclination: Omnivore, Neutral, Passive>

<Habitat: 1st Layer of the Forest of Ghosts & Ash.>

<Mutated monkeys with extremely high intelligence. They have Hyperthymesia almost to the point of a photographic memory and a high talent for all things magic.>

’Hyperthymesia, huh? That’s great, perfect even. Rio will never forget how rude I was to him.’

|<Multi-Tailed Foxes>| 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

<Average level: ???>

<Inclination: Omnivore, Neutral, Passive>

<Habitat: 1st Layer of the Forest of Ghosts & Ash.>

<Foxes that are often mistaken for the Yokai, Kitsune. They are born with 2-7 tails, which determines what type of magical Element they were born with.>

"Passive my ass! That thing attacked us unprovoked! It even called us unnatural creatures or something." Nera complained, seeing the entry.

"Technically, I don’t think it was wrong though. The Verminae probably are unnatural to this world." Alchemy chuckled.

<Mint Lions>

<Average level: 17-25>

<Inclination: Carnivore, Neutral, Aggressive>

<Habitat: 2nd Layer of the Forest of Ghosts & Ash.>

<One of the four Lion species that rules the outer portion of the forest’s 2nd layer. They specialize in Fire Magic and can transmute all the magic in their immediate area into flames hot enough to melt rock at the cost of their life force.>

"So that last move it used was its do-or-die ultimate attack, huh? And then Teacher just shot a single air blast to kill it. How anti-climatic."

"Burning their Lifeforce... That’s a Demonic technique... Mother Goddess! Please permit me to go look into how a Species of Mana managed to replicate it! Please, please, please!" Nera pleaded desperately.

"Another time." Alchemy continued to chuckle.

She was glad that Nera wasn’t down. The atmosphere after the fight was pretty bad.

The rest of the pages were... Less than helpful. They covered the mutant monsters like Sapphire, that Groundhog Nera fought, and the 3 three Hero tribe leaders in Gravana, Rio, and Sevi, of which there wasn’t even a description. Their average levels were also all question marks.

As Alchemy closed the book, Gravana returned.

"The rewards had been prepa- woah, that’s a big book."

"A big book it is." Alchemy nodded, allowing the book to vanish.

The group walked to the center of the village, where two piles of materials rested.

Gravana’s was a reasonable amount more significant according to their 60-40 split. Alchemy had thought he deserved a larger cut since he did most of the work, but she wouldn’t bring that up if he didn’t.

"We thank you again for helping us. We’ll call you again if any more lions get close." Sevi said.

"Grahaha! Feel free to! I’ll gladly test my mettle if those lions want to keep causing problems. I’m sure my disciple would be glad, too, as well!"

"Preferably not fire, but yes, I’d be glad to come with my Teacher again to help," Alchemy said, placing the unrefined metals into the storage.

As they vanished, Sevi’s eyes widened.

"S-spatial magic? S-such a high-level magic so casually!" She spoke.

"Are you sure about that? Perhaps it was a trick of the eyes." Alchemy said, grabbing the ores back out.

"After all, every good fool has plenty of tricks up their sleeve."
