Chapter 33: Unworthy Mortal

Darius’s instincts were telling him to make a run for it, but he couldn’t move. He was looking at a man, and he couldn’t even move himself to attack him.

’What is this? Where is the huge monster I was facing?!’ Darius trembled with fear, looking at the man approach him. ’That’s a man, no no, that is no man!"

{Warning! Warning! Slav, The Greed Has Taken His revered form! Danger! Danger!}

Darius knew immediately that he was no longer facing something normal; he was going to have to give it his all, or he would die there.

"Taking that form only made you an easier target!" Darius launched for Slav, with top speed going for his neck.

Crack!

The sword hit Slav’s neck, shattering it almost immediately. He was looking at the creature, and he knew that he was not facing a man.

Slav’s hollowed eyes glowed as he wiped off the sword’s dust, unimpressed.

"You think that metal toothpick could hurt me?" Slav said with a sinster smile on his face.

Darius was about to move back, but he felt his leg frozen at the spot; he couldn’t move nor even do anything to back away. Darius used his other sword to try and hit Slav since he was not going to be able to move.

Slav stopped the blade mid-way with his hand, and he added pressure to break the sword.

"No cutlery, please," Slav said before delivering a devastating blow to Darius’s groin, sending him crashing into the temple pillars.

Darius struggled to get up, he was looking at the monster who stood at a distance from him.

"That thing got stronger, I will have to..." Before Darius could finish talking, Slav was right in front of him.

’Such Speed!’ Darius tried to brace himself with the armour, but Slav pulled him by the legs, slamming him around the temple floor like a rag doll.

He then tossed Darius into the air, he launched for him. Giving him a punch that shattered part of Darius’s ribs, sending the warrior back to the floor.

Darius landed like a meteor to the floor, causing a shockwave around the temple. Once he hit the floor, he managed to activate his armour of scales.

He turned to see Slav coming down feet first on his chest, sending him to the floor and causing the temple to shake; four of the temple pillars shattered with the impact.

Darius coughed out blood, he was alive only because he managed to activate Armour of Scales before the monster landed on him.

’How am I going to beat this thing? I am not going to be able to do anything to him.’ Darius was trying to shake the pain, but Slav was still standing on him.

"Oh, you survived! I thought I had already killed my plaything."

Slav stepped off Darius, pulling him by the hair, and he brought him closer to his face. Darius was staring into his hollowed eyes; all he could see was endless darkness.

"You know, I am happy you came along. It has been eons since a mortal pushed me to use this form on him. Everyone that came to this temple was unworthy and unfit to even see it." Slav stood up, lifting Darius effortlessly with him. He was looking at the warrior like a child inspecting his toy.

"You know what is funny? All of them who came here came for the power that was bestowed on you. But one by one, they all fell: rulers, warlords, archmages, holy ones, even demigods. None of them were given the chance you had, so I wonder." Slav pulled Darius close, whispering into his ears. "What made you so special that the Great One decided to choose you?"

Slav then tossed Darius to the other end of the temple, destroying the temple walls and causing part of the temple to begin to crumble.

Darius, who could hardly move, looked up; his vision had begun failing him. He couldn’t even stand up properly, he could hear Slav’s slow, taunting footsteps.

He grasped on for dear life, trying to make sure that he was not going to die.

"Your struggle is pointless, child. There is only death awaiting you; even if you manage to keep yourself awake, you will only feel more pain." Slav was in front of Darius, looking down on him like he was nothing but filth.

"I never would have thought that someone this weak would be able to inherit the great one’s powers." Slav picked Darius up again; the warrior’s face was covered in bruises. "No worries, I will relieve you of that duty after I make sure you have been engulfed in despair."

Slav placed his hand on Darius’s face. "Feel Fear! Chamber Of Despair!"

Darius felt a rush of energy. He suddenly saw himself in a room covered in darkness. He looked around to see that there was nothing, only darkness.

"What is this?" Darius looked around, trying to find out where he was when something dripped on his shoulder. It felt like water. When he turned to look at what it was, he was filled with fear and horror.

It was Lena’s head on a spear.

"Ahhhhhh!" Darius fell to the floor. He held his head, he couldn’t stop himself from throwing up. His heart began pounding rapidly, he couldn’t control the sharp pain he felt in his chest.

"No, it can’t be her! I made sure she was safe at home before I came here."

"You failed her, Darius."

A voice spoke up. Darius raised his head to see Theo standing there. A sword was plunged into his chest.

"No, No, No!" Darius crawled back, he couldn’t understand what was happening there. "You were okay, nothing happened to you."

"You failed, Lena. You failed me; you failed to get stronger, and now we are dead!"

"No!" Darius covered his ears; he curled up in fear, shivering as tears fell from his eyes.

Darius couldn’t control his tears as he cried, "I couldn’t get stronger! Even with this power, I was still weak! I am worthless, there was no point in saving me the first time."

Darius’ mind rushed back to when he was still a weak F-ranked warrior and how nothing had changed since he was being beat down.

"In the end, I still failed to make Lena happy. I couldn’t even help Theo get his revenge on that bastard. There is no hope for me, it is better for me to just die.’

"Darius!" A voice howled from the distance.

Darius knew the voice, it was Azree. He looked up to see a man standing in the distance. His face blurred out, the man was downing a red armor.

"This is an attack in your mind; get up! You can beat this beast; you wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t!" Azree yelled. Darius was looking at him, and he couldn’t move.

"What are you saying? Have you seen how strong he is? I can’t even scratch him, so how on earth am I going to beat him!"

"Look for a way, make sure that you find a way, and take that bastard down! Now GET UP!!!"

In the real world outside Darius’ subconscious, Slav was holding Darius by the neck, looking at him. He had placed Darius in the chamber of despair.

"This is my way of saying thank you, mortal. You entertained me, so I will have to make sure that I pay you back."

Slav took his hand back, he was about to plunge it into Darius’ chest.

"I will give you a quick end!" He launched the hand, but then there was a huge shockwave on impact.

Slav was shocked; Darius had stopped his hand subconsciously.

"What is going on here?" Slav was trying to push his hand in, but then Darius was still pushing him.

"I am not done yet." Darius could barely speak up; he raised his head, his eyes glowing bright red. Slav threw him back, jumping away like he saw a predator about to eat him.

’Did I just feel fear? For a mere mortal?’ Slav was looking at Darius as he staggered to stand; he was looking at Slav.

"Impossible! No mortal can break out of the chamber of despair like that! Who are you?" Slav was looking at Darius.

Darius managed to stand still looking at Slav, his eyes fixed on him.

"Me? I am just the unworthy mortal who is going to kill you!"
