Chapter 629 -629: The Priest’s Charms (5)
The sky was misty, and the distant mountain ranges were hidden in the fog, indistinct and barely discernible.
Ah Da looked ahead, his voice tinged with worry, “There’s some danger ahead.”
Fu Yu asked with curiosity, “What’s wrong?”
Ah Da pointed towards the mountain range shrouded in the mist ahead: “We need to get through between two mountains, which form a valley, and many Demonic Beasts live there.”
“Is this the only path?” Fu Yu gazed at the mountainous region: “Can’t we just walk around it?”
“No, we can only go through here.”
Demonic Beasts are those creatures that possess Magic.
Some Demonic Beasts are docile, while others are ferocious.
Docile Demonic Beasts are mostly kept as pets, and the ferocious ones either reign supreme in their territory, not lightly provoked by Magicians, or they have to be killed by Magicians for making items that require Magic.
—That’s the fate of those who aren’t ferocious enough.
Ah Da glanced at the misty sky, “My lords, are you… still planning to cross the valley?”
Ah Da’s subtext translated to: Are you two capable of fighting?
“Is the valley very dangerous?” Fu Yu asked, not quite assured.
“It’s down to luck. If we’re lucky, we might get through without any trouble. Unlucky, and we may encounter Demonic Beasts, which could get very problematic.”
Fu Yu looked towards Chuzheng.
Chuzheng · Top Boss · Zheng: “Let’s go.”
Having come this far, I can’t lose face and turn back to find the Magic Array, can I?
With an unchanged expression, the boss gave the order. Over time, Fu Yu had inexplicably come to trust Chuzheng, so when Chuzheng said to keep going, Fu Yu could only shrug.
–
The valley was shrouded in mist all year round, with tall shrubs covering the sky and vines entwined all over, making it almost impossible to see the sky.
Fortunately, the valley was not untraveled, and the road was fairly smooth.
The carriage moved along without encountering any particularly treacherous conditions.
“Roar…”
Suddenly, a beast’s roar echoed through the valley.
The sound was deep, reverberating from afar, causing the birds in the forest to flutter away into the distance.
“It’s fine, they’re far from us,” assured Ah Da. “Most Demonic Beasts, unless provoked, generally don’t attack us.”
Chuzheng didn’t show much reaction, sitting quietly by the carriage.
On the contrary, Fu Yu glanced nervously out the carriage window into the woods.
Sure enough, as Ah Da had said, no accidents occurred. They encountered a Demonic Beast midway, but Ah Da admonished them to keep quiet, and the beast gave them a glance from afar before quickly disappearing into the jungle.
Night fell.
They stopped to rest, and Ah Da didn’t dare to venture far, managing to find some wild vegetables and fruits nearby.
Not long after they had settled, a group of riders appeared in the distance.
They rode white Demonic Beast Horses, and in the middle was a woman wearing a Veiled Hat, covering her face.
The woman scanned them through her veil, dismounted her Demonic Beast Horse, and walked towards them, “Where are you going?”
Her tone was thoroughly interrogative.
Fu Yu, a person of good nature who had just left his clan, generally maintained goodwill towards most people.
But this manner of speaking made Fu Yu quite uncomfortable.
“Miss, do you have no manners?”
Slap—
A whip lashed out from the woman’s sleeve, striking a small sapling beside Fu Yu, severing it at the waist and toppling it over.
The woman haughtily sneered, “Answer when you’re asked, where are you going?”
“Miss,” a middle-aged man stepped forward from behind her.
The woman glared at the man, retracted her whip, and stood with her arms crossed to one side, silent.
Fu Yu had not encountered such baffling behavior before, and the young master flared up, returning the glare unhappily.
What sort of person is this!
So utterly impolite!
“Sorry, our miss meant no harm,” the middle-aged man said in a placating tone, even apologizing on the woman’s behalf.
“Hmph.”
The woman coldly snorted, clearly unimpressed.
“…” The middle-aged man continued, “May I ask when you all entered the canyon?”
Fu Yu mimicked the woman’s cold snort.
The middle-aged man sized up the group across from him.
Fu Yu had a decent appearance and demeanor while the dark-skinned man behind him, clad in coarse hemp clothes and looking somewhat simple and honest, seemed to be of lower status.
And the girl sitting by the fire, who hadn’t said a word from the beginning or even lifted her head to glance their way…
Her brows were lowered, her eyes downcast, and she fiddled with a stick, prodding the fire at irregular intervals.
Sparks flew from the fire, outlining the girl’s figure in sharp relief. But the blazing flames failed to warm her; an eerie chill seemed to envelop her entirely.
The middle-aged man withdrew his gaze and carefully chose his next words, “The thing is, ever since we’ve entered the canyon, we haven’t been able to find our way out, so we wanted to ask when you entered and if you’ve noticed anything unusual?”
Fu Yu’s expression became more serious, and he glanced at Chuzheng.
She remained indifferent, her attention fixed on the fire.
Fu Yu turned back, “We just came in today. What do you mean by not being able to get out?”
The middle-aged man, seeing that Fu Yu was engaging in conversation, hurriedly replied, “To be honest, we’re not entirely sure ourselves. We’ve traveled through this canyon before, but this time, no matter what we do, we can’t find our way out.”
Fu Yu was unfamiliar with the canyon.
He looked to Ah Da.
Ah Da shook his head, indicating that he’d never heard of such a situation before.
The middle-aged man, unable to glean any useful information, returned disappointedly to the woman’s side.
“Let’s rest here.”
The woman suddenly gave the order, casting a glare at Fu Yu at the end.
Fu Yu glared back unabashedly.
The middle-aged man nodded apologetically to Fu Yu and had their people clear the area next to them, then brought over some food and water, his manner immeasurably more polite than the woman’s.
–
Sitting next to Chuzheng, Fu Yu whispered, “What they said about not being able to get out, is it true or false?”
Chuzheng responded unhurriedly, “Can’t you decide for yourself?”
How the hell would I know if it’s true or not, I’m not an immortal.
“I don’t know…” It was his first time venturing out, after all!
“Has something like this ever happened in the canyon before? Could that group be plotting to rob us?”
The canyon was somewhat dangerous, but judging by the road conditions, it was frequently traveled. Ah Da had never heard of anyone being unable to leave the canyon, so he thought this possibility was more likely.
Chuzheng’s face was impassive: “If they wanted to rob us, they would have made their move already.”
They were only three on this side.
On the other side, there were at least a dozen or more.
If it were a robbery, indeed, they could just act outright.

Fu Yu and Ah Da exchanged looks, still uncertain whether the others were telling the truth, since they hadn’t experienced it for themselves.
–
Once the people on the other side had settled down, Fu Yu withdrew his gaze and sat alone, bored. He moved closer to Chuzheng.
“Miss Chuzheng, what are you doing in Penghua City?” Fu Yu asked while munching on a fruit, striking up a conversation with Chuzheng.
Having been able to learn the name of the boss from their conversation for this long, Fu Yu felt pretty good about himself.
“Nothing in particular.”
To pay a visit to the Ye Family… and to repay a… no, to return a favor.
That damned thing dared to throw her into the Pit of Ten Thousand!
She was working hard to be a good person every day!
“I want to go to the Magic Academy,” sighed Fu Yu, “but I don’t know if I can pass the entrance exams. If I don’t, it would mean I came here for nothing!”
Ah Da suddenly chimed in, “The enrollment period for the Magic Academy has already passed though.”
