Chapter 17: A good day to hunt

“What the hell are you doing?”

It was Reyan’s voice who came over to Kairen, running. He stood there beside a frozen Kairen and looked at the monster as well.

BOOM BOMM

Big boulders fell down from the mountain due to strong shaking. The monster was moving its body and slamming everywhere he could. It didn’t seem to think as if it just wanted to destroy everything.

“We have to kill it before it destroys the area. Hey Kairen, pull yourself together!”

Reyan, who quickly came back to his senses tapped on Kairen’s shoulder. It made him turn his head and look back at Reyan. It was visible on his pale face that his soul was already in the heavens, but he still tried to act reasonably.

“What- what should we do?”

.....

“What to do? Isn’t it obvious? We came here to hunt! We have to kill it.”

Saying that he unsheathed his sword and held it firmly. 𝘧𝔯𝑒𝒆𝓌𝘦𝘣𝓷𝘰ѵ𝑒𝘭. 𝐜om

‘Don’t say something that scary with such a cool posture!’

Kairen swallowed his saliva as he opened his mouth again.

“What about the others? Where are they?”

“They went ahead of us to see what has happened. I came looking for you so we have to join them soon.”

“Ah!”

‘What? Look at these guys working fast... Am I the only one here who was scared and frozen?’

Kairen suddenly felt embarrassed. Wasn’t it natural to feel scared in such a situation? These guys are the unusual ones not him! It was just that they were used to it! Right! As cadets, and as people living in such a crazy world! It wasn’t like he would see a huge monster each time he opened his room’s window every morning to make him get used to the sight!

He took a deep breath to calm himself down as he followed Reyan. The more he got close, the scarier the monster seemed. He could now see his other 3 teammates in the distance. They were keeping a safe distance from the monster while preparing themselves for battle.

The mage was already casting a spell while the swordsmen were wrapping their swords with aura. Their aura seemed weaker than Reyan’s but it was still a strong power.

Kairen turned and looked at the monster that was now really close.

“....”

He made eye contact with the monster. Kairen felt cold water splashing into his heart. He has frozen once again. The monster kept staring at him

“....”

‘What?’

“....”

Seeing him frozen in place once again, Reyan pulled his arm and dragged him towards the others. When they finally arrived, Reyan started talking to all four of them.

“As you can see, the monster has unexpectedly woken up, but that doesn’t change what we have to do. It is said to get stronger in the darkness, so we have to be more careful.”

“How are we going to fight it?”

“We still don’t know its weakness and attack pattern, so it would be better not to rush in the beginning. Kairen, Ellyn, you guys tray hitting him with long-distance magic first. Alyx and I will attack it physically afterward. Don’t stop after that, continue attacking once you figure out its weakness. Nibel, you stay back and protect the mages.”

“”””YES!””””

ROAAAARR BOMMM

Kairen, that had now calmed down to a degree, started arranging his spell. A light appeared above his head and then split into many bean-sized light spheres. The lights were then shot towards the monster’s belly.

Sensing the attack, the monster moved its body and crushed a boulder. Its horn shone for a moment before the broken boulders moved and created a wall. He blocked Kairen’s attack like that.

“So it could move the soil...”

“Does it have an earth attribute?”

“Shit! A monster with an attribute isn’t easy to deal with!”

The other mage’s attack was cast at the moment. Lightning fell from the sky towards the monster. It wasn’t just one, bolts of lightning fell from the sky one after another, each strong enough to cause great destruction. But this time, the monster didn’t move. The attack hit his body, but nothing happened to it.

‘Hmm?’

Wasn’t that lightning stronger than his light magic? Why block his attack but not the other?

While Kairen was having that though, the two swordsmen kicked to the floor and ran towards the monster. They jumped up and attacked its thorny skin with their aura-wrapped swords. The strung aura of two swordsmen hit its body, the small amount of the aura that hit the ground turned it to the soil but there were only small scratches left on its body and nothing more. The monster didn’t even react to their attack, instead, it was staring at one point.

“It’s skin is tough!”

However, Kairen wasn’t thinking about skin or whatever.

‘Is it looking at me or am I just imagining?’

Kairen really felt like the monster was still staring at him even in the middle of being attacked, but brushed that thought off of his mind. He must be hallucinating due to fear.

Kairen took a deep breath again and cast another spell. This time, he cast a lightning spell as well, though a lower level one compared to the other mage’s magic. He wanted to test if the monster will defend against his attack again or not.

The sky rumbled once more but this time, a single weak-looking purple and white flash of lightning appeared. The lightning could be considered more beautiful than strong. It felt like a joke compared to the attack from Ellyn earlier. The lightning went straight towards the monster.

However, the monster acted strangely. It suddenly took a step back, trying to move its huge body as fast as it could. But the lighting was faster as hit the huge thing’s back.

ROOAAARR

Unlike the other time, the monster screamed and wiggled around in pain. Its back was visibly burnt. The monster slammed its foot and shook its head in irritation and anger.

‘What the hell?’

Ellyn, the other mage, silently glanced at Kairen with a frown on her face. She was visibly confused on how his lower-level attack could hurt him when even two aura-wrapped swords couldn’t. It wasn’t just her, for a moment everyone turned and looked at him.

‘Don’t look at me like that, I also don’t know!’

It was indeed strange but it wasn’t like he could do anything about it right now.

It was at the moment

BOOOMM BOMM KWAK BOMM

The monster stopped in his place and glared right at Kairen. He wasn’t mistaken this time; he was sure those furious eyes were glaring at him. it then raised lowered his head, its horn shining visibly.

‘Holy shit.’

A massive amount of thorns was suddenly thrown at them. The thorns, made out of stone, left its skin like a hedgehog and flew in all directions.

“Dodge!”

Reyan yelled as he jumped up again. He skillfully dodged all the thorns thrown towards him as wrapped his sword in aura once again and sent a slash towards the monster’s newly burnt skin. The monster couldn’t react properly and the attack hit the monster’s weakened skin. A cut was cleanly created on its thick skin. meanwhile, the three people quickly dodged the thorns or hid behind a shield.

Being hit in a place two times, the monster roared angrily and shook in pain. It bumped its feet, roared, and turned around. The huge thing observed Reyan, who was ready to attack at any moment.

The monster stood still, gazing at Reyan. It didn’t move as if it was weighing its choices. After a few seconds, it suddenly turned its head towards where the mages were standing a little bit far away and glared at them. The monster didn’t give them time to think about what to do as it suddenly started rushing towards the three people who tried to protect themselves with two layers of magic shields.

“Ah fuck why?”

“Hey, move aside!”

Alyx cursed as he held his sword tightly. Reyan yelling out loud tried attacking it once again but it was hard to bring out that much aura so fast after dealing with such an attack.

It was impossible to run away from such a huge thing, rushing at them with all its might.

“It is moving too fast!”

Ellyn said that, seemingly scared. She couldn’t finish casting her spell before the monster reached them.

Kairen was too scared to talk or curse. His soul had already left his body before, now he felt like he himself would soon go join his soul in the heavens.

Kairen moved out of instinct. He quickly cast the easiest and fastest spell he could use. He filled the spell with neatly all the mana he had and threw an energy beam at the monster’s face. It felt weird, he had never used this much mana before. It felt as if something inside of him was shaking and his head hurt.

Seeing the attack, the running monster suddenly stopped moving. It stopped so fast that it caused the earth to be torn apart.

ROAAARR

It roared, twisted, and turned its body. The monster suddenly seemed scared. Just before being hit with the beam, it dug its horn in the ground, creating a shield out of the soil.

“Huh?”

BOOOOOMM

The shield was halfway created when the beam hit it. It protected half of the monster’s body, but the other half that was exposed was hit with it.

KYAAAAKKK

A loud scream was heard before dust filled the air. No one could see what happened to the monster. Silence filled the area as everyone nervously stared at the spot where the monster was.

And once the dust settled down...

“....”

.....

“....”

“....”

Everyone could see half of the monster’s body torn and destroyed. It was as if it was hit by a bomb. Its though skin was nowhere to be seen and its flesh burnt so much that the bone was exposed.

“...”

‘WTF’

People blankly stared at the level 2 earth attribute monster that lost half of its body being hit by a single energy beam.

“...”

Was that even possible?

The military agents that were preparing their equipment to aid the cadets in case they were in danger stared at the scene before their eyes with confusion and even cadets themselves were shocked by what happened.

And then all eyes turned to the reason the monster was in this kind of situation. A light-brown-haired young man was standing there, with a pale face and his mouth wide open.

Kairen’s head hurt and he felt tired, but he was so shocked that he forgot about them for a moment. Cold sweat was formed on his back under all those gazes. He smiled awkwardly and stared at the floor.

“Let’s finish it.”

Fortunately, Reyan saved him and gave an order to the team. The rest of the work wasn’t that hard. The injured monster was lying flat in the ground half dead.

“Seriously what the fuck!”

“I suddenly feel bad for the monster...”

The three swordsmen and one mage killed the monster easily and quickly.
