Little Miss Fortune: I Will Bring Prosperity to My Tang Family!-Chapter 113: Xiaolin Who Moves On Quick
Chapter 107
Xiaolin Who Moves On Quick
Hui Ning stood at the back of the house, holding her son, watching her round daughter lying face down on Xiao Zhong’s back. The lazy cow grazed leisurely. Despite the Huan family leaving nearly two hours ago, the chubby girl still looked despondent.
Xiao Zhong glanced back at his little master before wandering around the house as it wasn’t tied up today, allowing it to roam around. It saw its little master looking gloomy and not lively as usual, so it wanted to take its chubby master around, maybe that ought to cheer her up.
Xiaolin’s round face, nestled into the soft fur on Xiao Zhong’s back, managed a faint smile. Her hand stroked the cow’s soft fur, sensing his desire to cheer her up.
Ever since growing up, Xiao Zhong hadn’t been as playful, turning into a lazy cow, indifferent to everything around him. Throughout the day, he would often lie under a tree, chewing grass or nibbling at the grass around him.
"Thank you, Xiao Zhong," Xiaolin murmured, her cheek squished against his fur.
Xiao Zhong snorted softly in acknowledgment, continuing his slow walk with the plump figure clinging to his back. Hui Ning smiled at the sight, her amusement interrupted by the small chubby boy in her arms, who was now nuzzling into her chest, trying to part her clothing to find the soft, ample bosom from which he drank his daily delicious milk.
"You little piglet," she said, poking the boy’s plump cheek.
"Ah!" The fluffy baby, not yet having reached his goal, raised his tiny fist like a little thug, his thin brows furrowing, scrunching up his face so that his mouth almost touched his nose. Hui Ning burst into laughter at the sight.
"You greedy little thing," she chuckled, heading back into the house to nurse her noisy little one.
Villagers still busy harvesting sweet potatoes turned to look at the large, beautiful cow with long hair approaching their field, carrying a round, white lump on its back. They talked amongst themselves, pointing and discussing the sight until Hui Song, hearing the chatter, also turned to look.
"Xiaolin," Hui Song called out to his granddaughter.
The chubby girl lifted her head to look at her grandfather. Xiao Zhong, understanding the call, guided his round little master towards Hui Song, carefully maneuvering around the piles of sweet potato vines and sacks scattered on the ground. Upon reaching Hui Song, Xiao Zhong stopped, allowing Xiaolin to turn and face her grandfather.
"Why are you clinging to that big cow’s back?" Hui Song asked, gently stroking her head and observing her small hands petting the fur on Xiao Zhong’s neck.
"I’m sad. Earlier, I had so many friends to play with," she pouted, her eyes welling up with tears. Hui Song chuckled softly at her response.
"Everyone has their own duties. When you grow up, if you want to see them, you can always visit."
"Big Brother Lang and Big Brother Long have gone to study far away in the capital. How will I find them, Grandpa?" Her tear-filled eyes looked up at him.
"Why, that’s simple. You can go start a business in the capital," Hui Song said, half-jokingly. But his chubby granddaughter’s eyes widened, and she broke into a wide smile, raising her tiny fist in the air.
"That’s right! When I grow up, I will do business in the capital! Let’s go, Xiao Zhong, take me to the city. I’m going to help Uncle at the shop," she said, sitting up and gently nudging the big cow’s side with her legs while holding on tightly to his long fur. Xiao Zhong turned his head to look at his little master, as if to ask, do you think I’m a horse?
The big cow snorted but obediently walked on as commanded by his little master, leaving Hui Song staring after them with wide eyes. Realizing what his chubby granddaughter had said, he quickly ran after Xiao Zhong, who had already gone some distance, not forgetting to shout to his wife, who was sitting on the back porch making pickled vegetables. Zhang Ruo watched her husband run off with a confused expression.
"Hehe, Xiao Zhong, my dear, you should walk more to get some exercise, so you don’t get too fat and can build strong muscles. Do you know that there are plenty of young female cows in the city?" Xiaolin chatted with the big cow as they walked through her village, Shenlin, still hearing her grandfather’s shouts in the distance. Hui Song was running after them so fast that his hat was almost flying off.
Xiao Zhong, now a fully-grown young bull, snorted and lifted his head proudly at his little master’s words, shaking off his lazy demeanor and picking up the pace, making Xiaolin giggle. Her once chubby little cow had grown up so fast.
"You little rascal!" Hui Song, who finally caught up with his granddaughter and the big cow, panted heavily as he glared at her.
"Why are you following me, Grandpa?"
"Are you seriously asking me this? How do you think you’ll get to the city on your own? Sigh!"
Hui Song scolded his granddaughter, but she wasn’t really listening. She was busy envisioning a future where her family had businesses in every city in the Daqing Region. She imagined herself dressed beautifully, adorned with so many jewels that she looked like a walking gold cabinet, and laughed brightly. Hui Song shook his head, exasperated, seeing that his granddaughter wasn’t paying him any attention.
The three of them arrived at the new commercial area south of Jiangnan City’s gate, bustling with people and shops springing up like mushrooms. The once sparsely populated city gate was now crowded with barely any space to walk.
To the left were more than ten shops lined up, and to the right were two large market buildings. There was also a spacious parking area for horse-drawn carriages and carts, with attendants providing water and grass for the animals.
This area used to be just a place to park carts and carriages for people shopping at the market. But as trade in the area flourished, the chubby girl suggested expanding it into a dedicated parking and caretaking facility. They charged five brass coins per hour for parking, which wasn’t too expensive for the wealthy, and twenty brass coins for overnight parking. The Tang family earned a significant income from this addition.
"What is that?"
"I think it’s a cow, but its fur is strange."
"Yes, it looks like a cow to me too."
People shopping pointed and discussed the peculiar-looking cow walking proudly, with a chubby little girl riding on its back. Xiaolin sat up straight, her head held high, proudly showing off as if she were riding a warhorse worth dozens of gold taels. She listened with delight to the comments about her beloved cow.
My Xiao Zhong is like no other. Xiao Zhong is the most handsome!
Hui Song glanced at his little mistress and her pet, both holding their heads so high he felt his own neck ache. When they reached the front of the shop, he walked around to the back, where they kept another brownish-red cow.
Xiao Zhong, upon seeing his stablemate munching on grass, called out and walked over. The farm cow, hearing the familiar sound, lifted its head and responded, watching the long-haired cow approach with the white, chubby figure on its back.
"Xiao Zhong, stay with Xiao Hong. I’m going to check the shop,"
Xiaolin said as she patted her chubby cow on the head. Her father had bought two farm cows named Xiao Hong and Xiao Xue, named after their colors. There was also a young cow that looked like its father but had a white spot in the middle of its forehead, which she hadn’t named yet.
Mooo~
Xiao Zhong mooed before folding its legs to lie down, making it easier for its little master to dismount. Xiaolin climbed down from Xiao Zhong and walked into her barbecue pork restaurant.
The noise of the kitchen staff and the chatter of customers filled the air, as it was almost lunchtime, and the restaurant was full. As she reached the restaurant, Xiaolin remembered that she had planned to make spicy pork sausage salad. Her father had gone hunting for wild boar several times, but she kept forgetting because she always had succulent grilled pork neck to eat.
"Uncle," Xiaolin said, hugging her uncle’s waist as he stood talking to the restaurant staff near the cash register. Tianchen looked down at his chubby-cheeked niece, who was smiling brightly at him.
"What’s up? Are you feeling better now?" Tianchen teased his niece before finishing his instructions to the staff. He then crouched down, and the chubby girl jumped onto his back, holding on tightly.
"Yes, I’m feeling better. I need to move on." She rested her little chin on her uncle’s shoulder.
"H...huh? What did you say?"
"Hehe."
Xiaolin didn’t say anything more, just laughed happily before asking her uncle to take her to the pork shop in the market. Her long-mustached uncle had now become a wealthy merchant.
Since her barbecue pork restaurant ordered no less than five hundred jin of pork daily, not to mention a significant amount of offal, it could be said that her long-mustached uncle had become wealthy thanks to the chubby-cheeked little proprietress running her shop right across the market. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
"We have plenty of pork in the back," Tianchen grumbled, but he still took his niece out of the restaurant. With Hui Song helping out now, he could afford to slack off a bit.
"That pork is for the restaurant, uncle. I want to buy some pork to try making a new dish."
"What kind of dish?" Tianchen asked, excited. It had been a while since his niece had made something new for him to try.
"It’s called ’moo yor,’ uncle. You take finely chopped pork, mix it with seasonings and a little cornstarch, then knead it until it’s soft and fluffy. Wrap it in banana leaves and steam it until it’s cooked. You can eat it just like that, or use it in other dishes."
"And what ways are best to eat it?" The young man glanced left and right, and seeing no carriages or carts passing by, he crossed the street to the market directly opposite the restaurant.
"Steamed moo yor is delicious, uncle. Xiaolin likes it with lots of pepper. You can also fry it, make a salad with salted eggs, or mix it in a seafood salad. Oh, and in the future, we should raise ducks, uncle!" Xiaolin said excitedly.
She didn’t mention using salted egg yolk in the salad because she couldn’t bear the thought of wasting the egg whites. Her frugality ran deep in her veins, making it hard to discard anything unnecessarily.
Xiaolin ordered four jin of pork before asking her uncle to take her to the Larb restaurant, as it was less crowded there. When they arrived, she saw the employees and the beautiful sister Fang Jiao busy cleaning tables. The restaurant was packed with customers, making Xiaolin think it was time to come up with some new dishes for the Larb restaurant. Although it was already doing well, she felt it could do even better.
"Oh, what brings you two here?" Liu Hao, who was busy cooking for customers, greeted them.
"I’m here to make something delicious at your restaurant, uncle. Also, I want to come up with new dishes for the Larb restaurant. I want to see you work so hard that you don’t get a break. Hehe."
"You cheeky child, do you want to tire me out?" Liu Hao laughed as he handed a plate of food to Fang Jiao, who smiled at the Tang duo before quickly serving the customers.
Liu Hao sat down at an inside table, the usual resting spot for them, with the Tang uncle and niece following. Xiaolin was placed on a chair, sitting neatly as she grabbed some roasted peanuts to munch on.
"Have you thought of a new dish yet?" Liu Hao asked.
"Uncle said someone who raises chickens has started delivering them. So, I thought the new dish could be made with chicken since the restaurant only has one chicken dish."
"Shall we make it today? I want to eat something made by Xiaolin," Tianchen said as he leaned over and clung to the chair where his chubby-cheeked niece was munching peanuts.
"Do you remember the chicken curry with just a little bit of soup that I made for you before, uncle?" Xiaolin smiled slyly.
"Are you suggesting I sell it?" Liu Hao immediately straightened up. Thinking about that deliciously sparse chicken curry made his mouth water.
"Yes, uncle. I’ll name it ’Kaeng Khua Gai.’ The only difficult part is making the chili paste. The rest is easy. I’m sure the customers will love it. Oh! And do you remember the pork ribs with fresh chili sauce? You could sell that too, uncle. I’ll show you how to make it. It’ll sell really well in winter since pork is available all year round, unlike the seafood at father’s restaurant."
"That’s great! How much do you want for the recipe?" Liu Hao asked excitedly. The little chef’s dishes were always delicious. Customers would surely flock to his restaurant, filling every seat.
"I won’t sell it to you, uncle. I’ll give it to you," Xiaolin smiled widely, her eyes closing with joy.
"That’s not right, Xiaolin," Liu Hao sighed. Despite the close relationship between their families, matters of money or profit shouldn’t be taken lightly.
"Consider this an early wedding gift from me," she said with a smile.
Fang Jiao, who had just returned, blushed at Xiaolin’s words. The chubby little girl continued to tease her with a mischievous grin, making Fang Jiao want to hug and kiss her out of sheer fondness.
Acting on her impulse, Fang Jiao grabbed the round little girl, hugging and kissing her until Xiaolin’s cheeks were squished. Xiaolin giggled, feeling ticklish, and even the customers turned to watch, amused by the adorable scene. Seeing the round, white, cute-faced girl laughing so cheerfully, no one could be annoyed.
"Enough, big sister, hehe, stop it! Ha ha ha!" Xiaolin tried to push away her beautiful sister because, in addition to being hugged and kissed, she was being tickled around her waist, making her squirm, her belly fat jiggling like a sago worm.
After playing around until they were out of breath, Xiaolin, Liu Hao, and Fang Jiao sat down to pound chili paste and chop the chicken into pieces for preparation. The pork sausage, which they initially planned to make, was postponed because Xiaolin’s round belly started rumbling. They decided to cook something simple first to regain their strength.
Once the preparations were complete, Liu Hao lifted Xiaolin onto the table to instruct him on making the child’s special chicken curry. The fragrant chili paste was poured into the pan and sautéed with a small amount of chicken fat, releasing a strong aroma that wafted outside the restaurant. Both the cook and the customers sneezed until their faces turned red, but their noses felt surprisingly clear.
After the chili paste was sufficiently sautéed, the chicken was added and quickly stirred before tossing in kaffir lime leaves. The pan was covered and left to cook the chicken without adding water, as the chicken would release its own juices. The curry sauce was richer than usual, and if it seemed too dry, a small amount of water could be added just to mix with the rice.
Customers, intrigued by the unfamiliar aroma, craned their necks to see what was cooking. They frequently dined at this restaurant but had never encountered such a fragrant dish before. They could only hope the new dish would soon be added to the menu.
