Chapter 58: Deity of Ogres

Killer dissuaded the resistance, "Hold on, hear her out—I think this might actually be a good idea."

"Seriously, Killer?" Hans said as if disappointed by his comrade’s judgment.

"By allowing the condition of "entry" into the barrier, it’ll allow it to be maintained throughout the Eclipse in its entirety," the tenured witch elegantly explained, looking up as her ethereal gaze silently judged the outspoken adventurer.

"That’s good and all, but what’s the point of it staying up if the enemies will get in anyway?" Elena asked.

"A fine question," Beatrice said, snapping her fingers. "If the entry points are set to a size to only allow a few in at once, they’ll be funneled right into our attacks."

"It’s giving us the home field advantage," Leon added, looking down at the construct of the land.

"Precisely. This way, I’ll be able to manipulate the barrier to further assist everyone. It’ll be our best chance of surviving in direct confrontation," Beatrice reasoned.

"Any objections?" Leon asked, looking around the table.

The silent affirmation was a given from the employees of the estate, though even the most outspoken guests didn’t reject the proposal.

"If we’re taking the fight to the enemy, then this time we can prepare properly. The people need to be protected—last time, they were put in too much danger," Leon planned.

"I’ll be able to use the extra mana to form a barrier around the mansion itself, one that’ll keep malicious spirits out," Beatrice claimed, tapping the map.

"Sounds good. Let’s get started."

Every person has to chip in to get the estate ready to contend with the monster forces, from talking the refugees into staying close and together, calming the people, to getting into position.

Leon stood in the courtyard, looking towards the far-spanning cube. Beside him, the chimera stood tall like a proud king of the jungle, releasing a roar-like yawn.

"I’m going to need your strength for this, Hercules," Leon said softly, petting the bristly fur of the beast.

A comforting purr left the great chimera’s mouth as it shook its mane, seeming to give its blessing. The winds of the darkest night howled, passing through like a malediction of the coming moment.

Positioned up ahead past the gates, those of the vanguard stood ready.

"Let’s go! Let’s go!" The hairy man beat his chest like a gorilla, bearing his teeth as if waiting a moment longer would make him explode.

The dual-wielder of maces flipped her weapons around readily, staring towards the front of the barrier, "The competition is still going! I’m at one-eighty-seven!"

["Nela"] [CLASS: Breaker] [Level: 20]

Of a silent creed, the man whose face remained hidden behind a helmet quietly relayed his record, "Two-hundred-and-thirty."

["Killer"] [CLASS: Broken Knight] [Level: 23]

Overhearing the friendly contest between the adventurers, the guardswoman looked over at her coworker, unsheathing her rapier.

"A competition to see who slays the most. Should we partake, Karl?

["Aurora Vald"] [CLASS: Swordsman] [Designated Level: 18]

The warrior strapped the belts of his shield to his arm, shaking his head with a huff, "I’m just trying to stay alive here and earn my gold, missy. Let’s just focus on that first, alright?"

["Karl Harst"] [CLASS: Warrior] [Designated Level: 18]

Performing some quick squats to warm up, the red-haired adventurer hopped to his feet, having to hype himself up.

"You got this, Phoenix...You got this!"

["Phoenix Embrose"] [CLASS: Flaming Swordsman] [Level: 24]

Looking back towards the courtyard, the axe-wielding maid waved energetically, "Hey, Master! C’mon! The barrier is going to open at any minute! Don’t miss the fun!"

["Ruby Harma"] [CLASS: Maid] [Designated Lv: 21]

While the enthusiasm of the girl in the face of a battle of life-and-death against a blacked-out sun was unsettling, it was his cue to march.

He hopped atop the chimera’s back, riding it like a war elephant as it marched onward. Behind him, the slumbering sentinels of steel awakened from their sleep.

The groan of mechanical gears paired with the hum of archaic mana filled the air as one by one, they rose—

["Steel Golem"] [Level: 20]

Like soldiers born of iron, the giant guardians marched behind the lord and his beastly companion. As he rode in on the back of Hercules, bringing himself to the forefront of the vast field with his comrades alongside him, the great barrier fluctuated.

’It’s starting—we’ll break through the Eclipse,’ he resolved.

["Leon Schoeller"] [Lord System] [Level: 30]

A hole began to open in the translucent cube, the same happening on all ends as each positioned fighter readied themselves. It started from a gap as small as a gold coin, slowly expanding larger and larger until—

Massive, dark-red passed through the opening, gripping onto the ethereal edges to force it open even more.

"What the hell is that...?" Phoenix questioned.

Everyone watched in silence as through the forcibly enlarged gap, a colossal figure slipped through, entering the enclosed land.

It stood over seven meters in height, towering over the trees neighboring its position. The entity’s skin was like natural armor; an exoskeleton of scarlet bone, warping around its frame perfectly tuned for combat.

A twisted face that grinned like a demon, devoid of human eyes with a sharp, curving horn protruding from the top of its head like a hellish unicorn—it was a terrifying presence. Around its chiseled, stone-like shoulders, a scarf like that of a black cloud hovered.

[!!BOSS ENEMY IDENTIFIED!!]

["Minor Deity of Ogres: Rin’Ghal, The Berserker Incarnate"] [Level: 34]

It flexed its entire body, inflating its limbs with ungodly mass before releasing all of it into a roar that carried through the entire land. The fields of grass swayed, as leaves were carried from branches; birds that hung in the sky fell at the powerful warcry.

"Ghh...Loud," Aurora winced, covering her head.

"It’s trying to bust our ears...?!" Phoenix grunted.

Leon endured it, keeping his eyes forward the entire time.

Behind the scarlet-armored colossus, one by one, monsters began to invade the land, crawling through the gap.

["Possession Manifestation"]

Around him in the air as he sat on the back of the gargantuan beast, an assembly of cannons emerged from imaginary space.

He pointed them towards the opening in the barrier, striking his head forward as he puffed his cheeks out before expelling his command, "Attack—!"

The first move was made as all cannons fired, seeming to bombard the initial wave of monsters. Each of the projectiles, dense with mana, soared through the air—

With agility unbecoming of one of its size, the minor deity jumped in the air, spinning around as it used its leg to sweep through the cannon fire.

"What—?" Leon witnessed.

There was no such way to predict the nimble nature of the ogre deity as it intercepted all of the projectiles. As everyone rushed forward with the golems leading the charge, the red-exoskeletoned giant instead leapt from its position.

With such force behind a jump throwing such a massive figure into the air, the soil beneath its feet shattered. The wind generated from its rise cast in all directions, bringing the vanguard to a momentary pause.

"What the—?!" Phoenix raised his arm to shield himself from the pelting soil.

As Leon looked up, he stood on the chimera’s back, witnessing the colossal shadow cast itself over him. Seeing the demonic smile worn so plainly with a greed for battle in the sky, he knew what it was—

’It’s coming right for me,’ he thought. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Above the ogre deity’s hand, a blood-red rift in the sky opened as it reached in, pulling back out a ringed halberd, large enough to sever skyscrapers with one swing.

["Body of The Unending Blaze"]

Embers cast from his body as a mystical heat coursed through his limbs, providing an overwhelming strength. The chimera roared, jumping to give him a boost, to which he jumped from, going upward to meet the divine ogre halfway.

No more than an ant against its black-staffed halberd, decorated in golden rings, he pulled his blade back as its halberd swung towards him. The colossal blade cut through the air, coming with such weight behind it that it sounded like thunder crackling as it moved in.

Everything was put behind the swing of his own sword just as the halberd’s edge came within reach. He clashed against the five-meter long edge of steel, making direct contact as sparks danced in the sky.

Those beneath watched in a mixture of awe and horror at the clash, though it was Phoenix who summoned the awareness to shout out:

"Keep going–! Don’t worry about the Boss! He’s got this," the red-haired adventurer claimed, continuing ahead.

"Yeah–!" Boar yelled.

A resounding excitement came from those in the vanguard, led by the overwhelming glee of the axe-wielding maid, whose smile reached ear-to-ear as she ran right for the forefront wave of orcs.

In the sky, Leon pressed his strength against the minor deity’s own, though it felt like he contested an endless reservoir of physical force. He kept afloat with the fire within his body, keeping him in the sky, though it felt like a limited experience if he lost the contest of strength.

Behind the blade, he could see the twisted face of the ogre staring him down, like the mask of an oni, watchful with an ominous laughter that sailed through the wind.
