Chapter 59: A Sky of Fire

As his arms began to overheat, feeling himself overwhelmed by the colossus’ strength, he looked past the halberd at its red-fleshed wielder:

["Possession Manifestation"]

Calling upon a row of cannons, each of the steel-built weapons fired repeatedly, bringing a new twist to the ogre’s expression as it was bombarded with cannonfire. With such abundant releases of mana-fueled explosions against Rin’Ghal’s body, all Leon could see was a cloud of smoke before the grinning face emerged from beyond it.

"--Ngh!!"

Despite his best efforts, he was thrown back as it sent its entire strength behind the halberd, flinging him back down to the ground. He struggled to catch himself as he flipped through the air, seeing the field below rapidly approaching.

With no more than a millisecond to adjust, he caught his own momentum, landing on his feet as he found a shadow still looming over. He looked up, witnessing the ogre deity landing right after him as its feet slammed into the grass like meteors.

Everything around him rumbled as if an earthquake awakened upon the giant’s feet making contact with the soil. The ground he stood on split and broke off into waves as he maintained his balance, looking up at the fiend that dwarfed him.

Each movement it made stirred the air as its halberd was hoisted over its shoulder, letting its blank eyes remain watchful on the human’s position.

’Did it target me because it saw me as the strongest here? Either way, I’m going to have my plate full with this guy;’ Leon thought.

For the moment, he dismissed the empowering fire through his body, avoiding the risk of overheating. As he set his sights on the towering figure above, watching it begin to move its halberd again with the intent of severing the ground itself—

The thrilled yelling of an excitable young woman drew the ogre’s attention away from its own attack. Leon paused, watching as the red-bodied berserker seemed to wince before angrily swatting its other hand behind its head.

Slipping past its legs, the maid with scarlet twin tails evaded its wrathful retaliation.

"Ruby!?" Leon called out in surprise, finding the hyperactive girl landing beside him.

"You’re not actually surprised I’m fighting alongside you, are you, Master?!" Ruby excitedly claimed with a chuckle.

Of course, there was no other person in the world he’d expect to show such frivolity in the face of a horrific colossus than the battle-maid.

"...Well, can’t say you’re wrong there. If you’re here, then let’s get this done, alright? We’ll show this guy what happens when you barge into the Schoeller domain," Leon said, strengthening his body with abundant mana.

The ebony axe twirled above the maid’s head as she showed frightening control over the hefty weapon that most grown men would struggle to budge, "—Of course!"

With complete animosity, the divine berserker loomed over the two, standing like a blockade between them and the rest of the battle being waged.

The first move was made as the crimson giant pivoted, bouncing on its right foot as it swung its colossal weapon. As the blade came scraping across the field, he set off in a sprint in tandem with the maid.

"Jump!" He shouted, leaping off the grass.

Ruby did the same as the massive halberd passed beneath their feet, having shaved off a chunk of soil in a single motion.

"Ha-ha! Isn’t this fun, Master?!" Ruby shouted as she landed back on the ground without stopping.

"We have different definitions of fun!"

As the sight of the giant’s knees came within view, it lifted its foot, slamming it down aggressively before either could reach.

"Ah—?" Ruby let out.

"Ghh—!"

From the ogre deity’s slam, the ground beneath them unnaturally rippled, like waves in an unruly sea. He glanced up, seeing the giant’s twisted grin as its palm crashed down towards them.

With quick thinking, he grabbed the back of the maid’s uniform before jumping back, having to clutch her close to his own body.

"Master?! You know, I don’t think this is the time for this sorta thing—not that I mind!" Ruby bashfully said, shaking her head.

As his feet landed on the grass, watching the ogre bash the field with its palm, he dropped the maid back to her feet.

’This guy is a pain in the ass. Getting close is going to be tough when it commands that much reach,’ he thought.

There was no time to think as the massive figure sprinted towards them like an Olympic runner. It arrived with such speed it was hard to react to, bringing its halberd overheard before swinging it downward as if attempting to split through the two.

He jumped to the left, while the maid went to the right as the gargantuan blade sliced into the field. In the spare moment its hand was left near the ground, he rushed over with the intent to sever it. To his surprise, the hand quickly moved, smacking its giant wrist smacked against his upper body.

The sheer force behind such a simple movement felt as though his nose was shattered as blood shot out of his nostrils with an exhale.

"Master–!" Ruby called out.

"I’m fine–!" Leon assured, spitting the blood out as he moved to avoid another downfall of the halberd.

The malicious steel was brought back up, flinging chunks of dirt in all directions as the ogre immediately followed by jumping into the air again.

In a surprising fit of acrobatic mastery, the giant contorted its body, flipping its weight into a spinning kick aimed to crush the human lord. The unusual bout of agility brought the colossal foot down, crushing the land it befell on.

"Master!--" Ruby shouted desperately.

["Body of Indomitable Earth"]

"I’m fine...!" He forced the words out to his worried companion.

Leon remained uncrushed, holding his hands up against the colossal sole that attempted to flatten him. Beneath him, the soil caved in, forcing him to contest the weight of the minor deity with unsteady footing.

Everything was focused on maintaining a body of enduring strength, unyielding beneath the impossible pressure placed on him. While he held his ground, unable to move, only to keep the giant’s foot from crushing him, the maid rushed in with the full intent of freeing him from his precarious position.

"Just hold on a second–!" Ruby shouted, sprinting towards the ogre’s position.

As the maid rushed in, another figure charged in with greater speed, leaping towards the ogre with reckless abandon.

Rin’Ghal’s eyes shifted from the ground where his foot laid in a contest of strength, glancing over to find a chimera leaping right for his own face.

"Hercules?!" Ruby said in shock before smiling brightly. "Get ’em!"

The beast of silver fur clamped its jaws on the bridge of the colossal ogre’s nose, using its claws to keep itself planted on its face. An angered roar escaped the berserker’s lips as it stumbled back, tossing its head side-to-side in an attempt to fling the vicious beast away.

Freed from the massive weight, Leon let out a sigh, releasing the magical enhancement as his arms fell limp at his sides. Even having endured the attempted crushing, a numbness rang through his body, feeling the soreness in his shoulders as he caught his breath.

He collapsed to a knee from the sheer exhaustion of it, finding the maid rushing to his side with haste.

"Are you alright?!" Ruby desperately asked, kneeling beside him.

With a quiet nod, he dismissed her worry, picking himself up while wiping the spots of sweat from his chin, "I’m fine...That just took the wind out of me. If that damned giant’s foot was any heavier, I’d have been smashed."

"You’ve got Hercules to thank," Ruby smiled fiercely, looking towards the colossus.

The sheer tenacity of the chimera allowed it to hang onto the ogre’s nose before it was finally flung away, but not before having torn off a chunk of the giant’s nostril. By some force of will, the amalgamated lion landed on all fours, sliding back beside the two.

"Hercules!" Leon called out, ruffling the beast’s mane. "Good job."

An angered groan left Rin’Ghal as the berserker clutched its bleeding nose, looking towards them with utter malice in its inhuman gaze. Past the ogre, the sight of the vanguard battling with the monsters filled him with a sense of urgency and unease.

Ruby seemed to share the feeling, noticing it as she flipped her axe around elegantly, "Don’t worry about the others, alright? They’re all plenty tough."

"Yeah, I know–we’ve got enough on our plate to be worrying about others, anyway," Leon reasoned.

That truth was none more apparent as the ogre’s jet-black hair floated in the air as if it was submerged beneath a sea. Its hand rose into the sky once more, this time not withdrawing a weapon from its hellish rift, but a great expanse of fire that stretched in the free air.

The blackest night of the Eclipse was washed away by the burning horizon, stirred by the ogre’s hand as the sea of fire as though it were a brew fixated in the sky.

"Master, this looks...pretty bad, doesn’t it?" Ruby said with words in terrible awe at the storm of fire brewing in the sky.

"You’re finally speaking with some logic," Leon agreed.

It was a sight that even drew those in the frontlines’ attention, as Phoenix looked up at the hellfire brewing in the sky behind him.

"Holy shit...!" The red-haired man gasped, having his attention torn back as he deflected an orc’s incoming strike.

Amidst Phoenix’s distracted counter, he was nearly overwhelmed before the hand of a steel golem swept in front of him, crushing multiple orcs at once. Past him, the metal-born colossus stomped forth alongside its brethren, taking the aggression of the monster horde.

From somewhere to the right, a gallant laugh boomed from Boar at the sight of the golems on the attack, "Look at them go! They’re going to one-up us!"
