Chapter 114: Out of Character

With August’s warning, the white haired man composed himself, the glint in his eyes which was almost rivaling the craziness August gave off receding till it was nowhere to be seen.

August’s light warning was enough to bring him back from the path he had begun to venture into.

He had to be honest, the series of events that happened in that short span of time already made Kieran a specimen worth observing in his eyes.

Back when he had just been carried back to the camp and he was brought to his lab, he indeed felt some sense of surprise after seeing a couple of unknowns in the data generated.

That was the initial reason for this follow up test. He thought he might be able to get some more definitive results when he was conscious.

But now, things had just gotten stranger. From the strength he exhibited in the infirmary down to how his body resisted the mixture he had made himself, something that had never happened before. He could feel a spark in chest as he almost took it as a challenge, but he could ask the head for sometime to play with the recruit later.

’Even August wouldn’t be able to refuse if he asked him to let him go for a while.’

He threw a glance at August who had his eyes locked on Kieran’s floating figure.

For now, he still had to figure out what exactly the recruit was, hoping that would explain some of the unanswered questions flooding his mind.

"He’s gained immunity to the first drug, so it won’t work if I try it again."

"I’ll try another stronger mixture, but he has to let it work rather than letting his body fight against it."

The man said to August who was laying keen attention.

"Don’t fight it kid. Let it work"

August muttered in a very silent tone, yet his words traveled through the space and matter between the both of them and landed in his ears.

Kieran heard August’s words and understood what they wanted from him and he raised his arm to give him a thumbs up as a sign that he understood what he asked of him.

August smiled seeing that small action of his.

This time when the man released the gas into the tube, Kieran wes alert and quickly took control of his body’s automatic response, stopping himself from fighting against the effects of the gas.

Soon enough, he was beginning to feel light headed. It left like was floating on a buch of clouds with something holding him back from going higher.

"Alright, I can start now. This is going to take a long time, so I advice you don’t interrupt me by asking me to speed up"

He said to August who just scoffed his words away.

And over the course of the next few hours, the man sat there running through several tests and watching the data on the screen which flashed changing values in a matter of split seconds.

August simply stood in the same spot observing Kieran for any abnormal behavior so he could step in.

He had been standing in the same spot and position for such a long time that his had naturally blended into the background. Anyone who stepped in might even miss him standing there even if he was in the open.

As for Kieran, after a while the feeling of floating in the clouds changed into something else.

It felt like he fell asleep and woke up in a different environment.

’Illusion’

Kieran recognized it almost instantly.

In those Illusions he had been taken into, he had performed a bunch of weird stuff and had been forced to fight a couple of strong monsters. The difficulty of each monster rising till he just kept on dying no matter how hard he tired, even after pushing his ability to the max, or at least the few parts he had gotten the hang of.

’This isn’t really a bad test!’

Kieran thought to himself. This was his first time in an illusion and his body and ability had been replicated to a decent level.

Rather than replicated, Kieran could feel that what he was capable of doing were the things he was aware and sure of.

He knew for certain that there were other abilities that he hadn’t touched upon yet. Abilities which would’ve been activated under certain circumstances, but in this case, they didn’t because he did know anything about them.

Still, it was like a free opportunity for him to train with his ability and get a little bit more familiar.

"Incredible!" 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

The mam muttered after going through the data he had just recorded several times, just to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.

"I wonder just what he is. Does he even know how lucky he got!"

He muttered the last part looking at August who stood in the middle of the room.

The moment he set his eyes on the figure though, those thoughts were wiped off his mind instantly as he doubted the feeling in his own chest.

There was something in the way he stood there, waiting patiently for him to finish, in the way he looked at the body of the recruit with an expression.

All of it was unlike him.

His face suddenly brightened in realization as he reprimanded himself for thinking that way.

Walking up to August who for the first time in years had a clear look in eyes, without any craziness swirling deep within, covering the the pain he had succeeded in hiding to himself alone.

The white haired man silently tapped his shoulder gaining his attention.

"I’m done!"

He said softly, feeling sorry for the man he just happened to hate a lot.

"How was it?"

August asked for the results of the tests which had taken hours to complete, significantly longer than when Kieran was first brought over.

"Well...."

The man took a deep sigh to get himself together
