Chapter 147: Retaliation

"That was a good match you had back there. I enjoyed it."

Kieran looked back to see Asher behind him with a smile.

"And?"

"That’s no way to take a compliment!"

Asker said walking up to Kieran. The other recruits around walked away, while discussing with themselves about the relationship between those two.

Kieran stared at Asher for a while before walking away without saying anything.

Asher though wasn’t ready to let him off yet as he trailed behind him.

"Don’t you have other things to worry about?"

Kieran said gaining a small chuckle from Asher.

"I think that’s been settled."

Kieran looked at him from the edge of the eye at those words.

After the fight with Dain, word had spread like wild fire and everywhere he went, he had been getting stares of different kinds from the recruits of the camp, both those of higher years and his batch.

It was quite unnerving for an invisible man like him.

Besides that was another thing that was a topic of discussion amongst the recruits. The cafeteria was the best spot to get to hear things like this.

He had heard several recruits discussing about something related to the Aurora’s. Ethan had gone out to attack a particular noble group based on rumors that had been floating around saying that Asher had intentions of switching sides and betraying the Aurora family.

’Well, that isn’t wrong!’

Kieran thought when he heard those words, but he could already tell that something was wrong somewhere.

Ethan had attacked the wrong group and that seeing how calm Asher was behind him, it only mean one thing.

’It’s their doing. But why?’

Kieran thought.

He knew enough to know that this was very likely a plan laid out by Sabrina and Asher, but he couldn’t tell why, and to be honest he was glad that things were that way.

So, he didn’t dig more into Asher’s comment. Silence was avoidance.

He was having it bad already with all the talk surrounding the fight. Dain had been in the infirmary for the past few days and according to the doctor, he was finally making some good recovery.

Kieran had made sure to visit each day to get a report from him, so the doc didn’t make it hard for him to see the patient from a remote location.

As if that wasn’t enough, August hadn’t said anything concerning the fight at all. Kieran didn’t know if to he happy or unnerved. He had done his best not to show too much.

Just as much as he needed, but the shock that came with him defeating the 62nd ranker who was definitely stronger than his rank already attracted the eyes of multiple people on him.

He he also noticed some soldiers staring at him strangely recently too.

"Heyy! What are you thinking?"

Asher tapped him on the shoulder and looked at him with a genuinely concerned expression.

The Number one recruit of the camp wasn’t what he had envisioned him to be—cold, arrogant and prideful.

Kieran was starting to take note about his image of Nobles, not that he was wrong though, most of them were like that.

But he was also starting to realize that quite a number of them were reasonable and even amongst those who acted in ways he despised, there was a motivation behind such acts, some which be just couldn’t look down on.

Dain’s last words flashed in his mind.

People like Ruby, Jake, Asher and Derrick were they type he had no idea existed.

He was a little glad that there a couple of reasonable people within the rotten circle of Nobles. In this current era, it was quite hard to see people who did things that didn’t align with their interests.

’I wonder how he’s keeping up!’

Kieran was assaulted with briefly with old memories as he recalled the infirmary in high school. The only safe space for a person like him.

The doctor was one of those people—those who did things that didn’t line up with their immediate concerns, just because they felt it was the right thing to do.

"You’re spacing out a lot kid!"

Asher said once again, leaning back on the chair as he watch Kieran with curiosity gleaming in his eyes.

’I heard he dislikes nobles, doesn’t really feel like that. Would be nice of we could get someone like that on your side though!’

’In the long run, we would have to recruit those with high potential before the military or the nobles take them for themselves, and he’s definitely one with potential’

Asher pondered taking a few sips from his drink.

"What do you know about the current situation?"

Asher asked again, pushing a conversion.

"Nothing I don’t want to!"

Kieran checked his watch. He was supposed to have a meeting with the Head Chef, but it didn’t seem like the old man would be making it today.

’I wonder what keeps him that busy!’

He hadn’t been able to meet with the chef ever since he came out of training. He had even missed the meetings he set up himself. Kieran was starting to get concerned, but the other chefs had assured him that it was nothing too serious.

He had asked August just to be sure and he had gotten the same reply. That helped put his heart to ease.

"You should keep staying updated about things that happen in the camp. You might think you won’t get involved as long as you don’t pay too much attention. But trust me, by paying no attention, you’re way more likely to get caught up in something you’ve always wanted to avoid"

Asher said and Kieran couldn’t help but agree with his logic.

"Why don’t you tell me something that interests me!"

Kieran said and Asher raised a brow surprised he even got a reply.

"Shoot!"

"Tell me about the Adramalech just below you."

"You shouldn’t mention that name lightly, you know? Take that as my warning. So, what do you want to know about her?"

"Anything you’re willing to spill"

Asher chuckled, but Kieran’s stare made him understand that he wasn’t joking.

"Alright then. This is going to take a while!"

Asher said setting down his drink. It seemed like he had quite a history with Adramalech daughter.

...

’How?’

Ethan’s face was lacking its usual mischievous expression as be stared at the peice of paper in front of him.

It was a letter from Sabrina’s family, addressing the recent events and actions in the camp. The more he read, the more livid he became.

’They sent me information and now they want me to take the blame?’

Ethan rumpled the piece of paper and threw it to the side of the room.

He couldn’t deny that he had fucked up. The family had given him the information that a rumor like that was spreading around the camp and he had acted upon it almost immediately.

"Shit, I should have confirmed first. I got carried away!"

He ran his fingers through his hair.

’But still....something smells fishy!’

"Who was behind the false rumors in the first place?"

Ethan narrowed his eyes as he thoughts ran across all the opposition factions he knew off.

The Aurora family was a powerhouse, both in the camp ans outside. Only a few dared to oppose them openly and all those who did in the camp, did so in secret.

’Sigh!’

Ethan was feeling frustrated and angry. He had to get to the bottom of things, especially after how he had rubbed those words in Liam’s face.

...

"What do you think?"

Liam asked Sabrina who sat a few meters away from him, staring into the distance.

"Not bad for a first move. Ethan made a huge mistake and now quite a number of recruits look upon the family unfavorably. I doubt they’d get as many volunteers this year."

"I’ve also managed to narrow down the list. There are two of them."

"And how do we deal with them?"

Liam asked, curious to know of Sabrina’s methods.

"Track their missions, we’ll get rid of them outside the camp!"

"What about their watches? The camp wouldn’t just sit down and watch you kill it’s recruits!"

"Don’t worry about that, I’ll deal with it!"

Sabrina said, walking out of the room.

’I just need to call the right price and get the best deal I can. Who would care about mediocre recruits when they can exchange them for something worth far more..’

"This is going to pinch a little!"

Sabrina muttered thinking of the absurd things the camp could ask of her. She was in a losing position right now and they weren’t going to let go of such beautiful opportunity to exploit her.

The camp wasn’t one to seal a losing deal after all. Either ways, she couldn’t back out now, it was necessary if she wanted to progress with her plans.

’I should make some preparations!’

Sabrina thought slowly. It was the beginning of her retaliation.
