Chapter 158: Phantom

"This will be your room until you’re ready to leave."

The soldier said, gesturing to the door right beside him.

"Yeah, thanks!"

The group of four stepped in under the watch of the soldier.

Step..step..step

"I think he’s gone."

One of the guys said, placing his ear on the door. The soldiers steps had faded into the distance.

"So....what do you think?"

Lira asked Orion and the other two looked on, waiting for an answer or a series of orders.

"I need to think!"

Orion said calmly as he took a seat on the lower bunk of one of the two bunk beds in the room.

It seemed to have skipped their minds that there was a a female among them or they really didn’t care as they were all shoved into the sake place.

"We’ll play along for a while. The commander fits the description and his words makes a lot of sense too."

"We’ll hang around."

Orion said and the tense shoulders of his teammates dropped and the violent edge around them reduced.

"Check the area for monitoring devices. Don’t just lie down!"

Lira said before the boys became too lazy and unwilling again.

"There’s nothing here!"

They all confirmed after sweeping through the room a couple of times.

"Hmm. Get some rest!"

Orion said to them and they all followed. They had come a long way and had gone through immense pressure back at the commander’s office. Rest was what they all craved.

.....

THUD!

THUD!

Kieran and Jake landed sofly on the other side of the wall.

"Hmm? What’s going on?"

Jake expressed the shock Kieran held within as their eyes grasped the sight of the undamaged outpost in front of them.

’They survived?’

Kieran wondered silently, seeing several soldiers walk around in patrol in the distance.

They had developed their suspicions after they came across the thrid line of defense, the death trap that they had managed to escape.

Deep down, Kieran and Jake both wished that there was no one in the outpost and that they had all died by some mysterious methods of the monster army.

’That would have been more convenient!’

"We have to move, quick!"

Kieran whispered to Jake, taking himself into the more shadowy areas.

The fog was already taking over and soon the sunlight would be blocked, allowing them to hide themselves better in the darkness.

"We can’t let them find us!"

Kieran said to Jake who kissed his teeth in slight frustration.

"This wasn’t in the details of the mission given out by the camp. Not even in the one I sourced personally!"

"I have a feeling Orion and his team is just as shocked as we are, but they’ve got the advantage."

’They are here on official terms!’

Kieran and Jake whispered to each other hiding in an empty building they found not too far away.

Orion and his team could easily step in without much complications. Their mission was proof that they were there officially.

Kieran and Jake on the other hand couldn’t prove anything to the soldiers here. They were likely to be attacked immediately they produce a reason for being here.

All other proofs of identity were basically useless. This was a high security outpost set out by the camp. No ordinary recruit had any business being here, as this was the first time a mission had been put out in relation to the place.

"Kieran!"

Jake called his attention and Kieran could spot the dark expression on his face through the darkness.

"What’s wrong?"

"Our watches. There’s an interference. We can’t connect back to the camp, the readings aren’t even functioning well!"

Jake said, tapping away on the watch to see if he could so something about it. He quickly gave up though after several tries

’Is it this place?’ 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Kieran reasoned.

They definitely hadn’t been paying any attention to the piece of equipment on their wrist while trying to get out the traps alive, but he hadn’t heard of anything in the region affecting communications and the performance of their watches.

The outpost was the only unknown, the only gray blur.

"..."

"We are going to look around, but not now!"

Kieran said, looking straight at Jake who nodded in agreement.

’We can only go with the flow at this point’

Jake said to himself.

Their initial plan of following Orion and his team to the location of their mission and assassinating them there or on their way back had gone and developed major hiccups.

He wasn’t even sure if they could pull it off under circumstances like these. They had their own heads to worry about right now.

One thing was sure though, if they managed to get the chance, the chances of actually succeeding had taken a huge hit. There were just far too many unknown variables right now.

"We need to rest. The fog won’t be backing off for a rather long while. We can move around a little before then."

Kieran said resting his back on a wall as he slid to the ground.

The place was built like a storehouse, but was currently empty which was rather strange. Either ways, it was the perfect place for them to rest in for now.

Scratch that, it was the only place for them.

"Ughh!"

Kieran groaned as he turned off his Absolute insight which he had used to check the place before they ran in.

If anything, he was the one who needed rest. He had done basically all the work and pushed himself to the limits.

His energy pool was dry and his eyes throbbed like they were going to pop out. He had neither the strength nor concern to wipe off the blood which left a hardened trail on his face from the edges of his eyes.

Jake looked at him and have out a small sigh, he really needed the rest.

’I guess I’ll keep watch then!’

He sat at the other end of the room, facing the only entrance into the space while Kieran had unknowingly fallen into the realm of sleep.

"I have to adjust the plans.."

Jake muttered staring into the darkness.

.....

"You all ready?"

Orion asked the team. They had slept for a few hours already. It wasn’t the best they could get, but it was enough.

"Yes, boss!"

They all replied, placing their weapons on their beds.

A new face had come to invite them to join the soldiers in dinner, letting them know that it was already night time.

They wouldn’t have been able to tell even of they were outside staring at the sky. The thick fog blocked all of that.

According to the soldier, the commander had allowed them to carry their weapons if that made them more comfortable, but Orion had chosen to leave them behind.

Taking them along would only be dispectful.

They also weren’t respectful enough to go out unarmed. They had equipped themselves with a couple of concealable weapons just in case they happened to be needed.

"Let’s go then!"

"We are done!"

Orion said to the soldier who waited a distance a way from the room.

"Hmm, follow me!"

The soldier said, leading them away.

The solder had a calmer temperament compared to the one from before, but he also had a similar aura of friendliness coming off him which made them feel a little uncomfortable.

The soldiers back in the camp were nothing like this, despite their expressionless faces, one could feel a very dangerous aura radiating from them, the scent of blood that remained in the air when they passed by.

It was hard to miss. They all had vibe around them which finished their image as active soldiers. Only the instructors and other high class officials, had glaringly unique traits.

Orion and his crew followed him further into the main building until they reached a rather big cafeteria. Not as huge as the one the one in the camp, but big regardless.

’Hmm..’

The eyes of the solders only shifted to them for a moment before going back to their food. Just like earlier in the day when they had ignored them.

The chatter in the room did go down, upon their entrance though.

"Don’t worry, everyone’s nice. You’ll get along in no time!"

The Soldier said to them with a small smile, before taking a seat for himself at a table filled with other soldiers.

"Let’s go pick a plate."

Lira said, waking up to the counter.

They had only been escorted here, they weren’t guests who were expected to be served.

...

’Everything seems to be good so far"

Lira whispered to the others side of the table.

Their presence was quickly forgotten by the soldiers in the room and the chatter had gone back to how it was. Some had even grown comfortable enough to approach them and drag some of them to where the others were.

Orion who had been watching silently, stood up and walked to join them off his own accord, hinting Lira to do the same.

The soldiers were pretty friendly. He had no plan to ruin the atmosphere.

"Hey, what do you think about taking these kids out with us tomorrow?"

One of the soldiers shouted, asking the others who only nodded in agreement.

"Out where?"

Orion’s teamate who was beside the soldier asked.

"Somewhere fun!"

The Soldier said, chuckling a little.

"We are going out into the fog!"
