Lost Origins: SS Ranked Awakening-Chapter 177: Flames of war
A few days had passed by since the event of the mission and in the camp, it was like nothing had happened. There was no news or rumors about the actual events.
Handiwork of the camp itself. The outpost was an official secret after all, and so the events were to be kept confidential. A couple of camp officials had called him and Jake in to make sure they understood what that meant.
For some reason they ignored the fact that they were in a place they had no authorization to be, unlike Orion’s team, and neither Kieran or Jake tried to pry inro the matter either.
They just credited that as something August had helped them with.
After getting discharged from the infirmary, they had returned to their usual routines and while Jake hadn’t said anything about another attack on Orion, Kieran knew he was thinking about several ways to take the recruit down, but that was no easy task at all.
So far, after the mission Orion seemed to have forgotten about Ruby and had made no new moves, giving Jake some time to think and prepare for what next could be thrown at them.
Make no mistake, Orion still was going to come after them.
For now though, he remained mellow, probably because of the death of his teammate. At least that was the reason everyone in the camp had gone with.
The camp also used that to their advantage to highlight the increasing danger of missions.
The monster groups out there were becoming more organized, no longer heading in random directions and exhibiting the careless behaviors of scattered monsters.
There had already been several reports of monster groups consisting of different species of monsters which moved together like a single body without jumping at each other’s throat.
It was clear that the enemy had started to gain control and structure. It was easy to beat up a normal group of beasts than one with a leader giving out instructions.
This very observation was the reason why the military having found and steeped foot onto the planet, made it their priority to get rid of the top species of the planet and eliminate most of the beats capable of intelligent thinking.
They left the remaining to thrive for the sake of being harvested for resources.
Unfortunately some of those monsters had vanished into the forbidden zones of the planet. Places where the military had deemed it impossible for any living creature to survive in.
Still they kept their eyes on those places and no movements had recorded, making most of them assured that those beasts had run to their own demise.
Yet the monsters had started to gather on a large scale and move with a sense of coordination. Signs that pointed only to the survival of any of the top species of the planet.
They were the only creatures on the planet with enough power and bloodline authority to pressure the scattered monsters and make them obey.
To make it even worse, they were armed with a very powerful piece of military equipment, one of the only two infact.
That piece of information was privy to only those who discovered this in the first place, namely Kieran and some other recruits, and a handful of high authority individuals in the camp.
For now, there wasn’t much the camp could do. Using the recuits to clear out the smaller groups of monsters while keeping their main forces at bay unwilling to strike an unclear target.
The head of the camp had sent a notice to the military for more troops but replies had been delayed and until they got one, they were alone to handle their business.
The several noble familes who had investments in the camp had yet to be informed of the actual situation on the planet, thinking it something they could handle without aid.
The commader of the Origin camp being a member of the military had still expressed his will to send out a message for help, but the will of the commander wasn’t absolute.
The other high ranking officials had refuted strongly against his idea unwilling to imagine themselves bending a knee to the Nobles.
Those ravenous wolves had made sure to take the most advantage of them whenever the chance arose and the current situation would be like like serving themselves to the wolves, offering to be taken as sacrifice.
There was no way they were going to make such a decision, despite knowing fully well how selfish their thught process was.
"Tell me, how was it?"
The Chief commader of the camp asked, his question directed to August and Selena behind him.
"We managed to neutralize the threats and deal some considerable damage on them, sir."
Selena reported in a curt manner but August’s low scoff, had her eyebrows twitching in annoyance.
"Hmm, but we didn’t manage to kill any of them?"
The commander ignored August’s attitude and said, turning around to face them with a deep frown on his face.
"What about you August, what do you think?
"I think we either push to get reinforcements or start preparing to get of this planet, unless you want to sacrifice all those kids, that is"
August spoke in a surprisingly serious manner. His voice was sharp and demeanor devoid of its usual laziness, going forth to show how serious of a matter they were discussing.
The truth was that the camp knew well enough that the outpost had lost its battle had been taken over, yet they sent Orion and his team which they thought capable, for the sake of serving as decoy.
Something just strong enough to get the monsters gaze off them, and while that plan was in effect, the chief commander dispatched August and Selena to head over to the battle field to carry out the main mission.
Kill the three beasts which controlled the fog in that area— the heavy presences Orion had felt.
Kieran and Jake were an unexpected yet small variable, a favorable one, since they manged to lure out the monster that had been sent to take over the outpost.
Still, their main objective had been lost and they didn’t manage to kill the three beasts, with two of them managing to escape with only some heavy injures.
With the vitality of those S ranked commander level beasts, they were sure to have recovered some level of thier fighting power in a few days and recover fully soon after.
"Sigh!"
The commander let out a deep sigh, pressing his thumbs against his forehead.
"The matter is clear. We are weaker than them. Even the plan to use the recruits was proven to be filled with faults"
Micheal, the white haired scientist spoke up from the side of the table, bringing up the fact that Orion and his team who were one of the strongest members of the second year recruits had almost died out there.
"They’re kids. There’s nothing they could have done in that—"
"Cut the crap!"
Micheal interrupted Selenas words.
"Just like you said, they’re kids, not soldiers. But we don’t need kids, do we?"
Micheal said, pushing his glasses up with his index finger. His gaze was persistent on Selena, pressing for a reply from the soldier.
"No, we don’t!"
She replied, giving in to the truth.
"I don’t know why you give in to those old men! Break a few of their bones and this could all be resolved"
Micheal said, slumping back into his chair.
Hw wasn’t wrong. The only reason they were in this situation was because of the pride of the other officials. They were bound to change tunes and look for a target to blame the moment they felt their lives at risk
The commander and August remained silent for a while before he finally broke the silence.
"What about the other kids?"
The commander said, referring to Kieran and Jake, but Micheal spoke against in instantly.
"No way! They’re even worse than the last ones. Besides, you know why you can’t use them. It’s too much of a variable!"
He said, turning to look at Selena to her confusion.
She was the only one who didn’t know what they talking about here.
"I suggest you throw them all into the fire!"
August spoke up directing all attention to him. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"What are you trying to say August?"
Micheal narrowed his eyes with a dark expression. He didn’t like where this was going.
"Go on."
The commander said, intrigued with what the instructor had to say.
"It’s just like you all said. They’re just kids and we need soldiers not kids. We need manpower, strong ones, but the old men are too prideful to ask and too fearful to use the noble descendants."
"What’s the point? They came here to become elite soldiers in the harshest place possible, but we’ve been too slack."
"They’ve learnt pretty much all they can. Some sheltered duels inside aren’t going to make much of a difference in growing their strength."
"Who cares if some of them die? It’s only natural that they do. Like you said commander, the flames of war are the best to temper a person in. That’s what you did with us after all."
August came to a halt and Selena who had her mouth open in opposition stopped upon hearing those last words.
Micheal too, despite his dissatisfied express said nothing to refute.
"You’re right. Make the preparations."
The commander said in a deep tone after a long moment of silence.
"Gladly!"
August saluted with a devious smile on his face.
