Chapter 25: Foundations

As the classes ended, Azariah found himself back in his room again.

’There’s a week left huh?’

Alyssa had some work to do so she left right after class.

Azariah offered to go along if she needed, but she politely rejected him — much to his happiness.

Nowadays, he only asked her such stuff out of formality. Most of the time he was hoping to be rejected.

It wasn’t like these exchanges were useless though. In fact, their relationship had gotten much better over the course of time.

Now that almost a month had passed, both of them were quite familiar with each other’s schedules or habits.

Focusing back to the present situation though, Azariah was excused from his patrol duties for today.

After 3 weeks in the academy, every cadet was allowed to go outside on the weekends with the only exception that they had to be back by Sunday night.

Since it was the first free weekend for the first years, Melissa allowed Azariah to take a rest.

He couldn’t be happier at the opportunity. Azariah had already been itching to leave the academy from the first few days.

All because of one reason.

His weapon.

In the coming fight ahead, he couldn’t just rely on Pixelation and Umbrakinesis.

Yes, they would be his special weapons, but he couldn’t rely on them the whole fight.

Especially with his limited mana supply.

Which left him with his weapon — and though he was improving significantly in that aspect, it wasn’t enough.

He was only improving the execution aspects of his aim: the aim, reloading, management, etc.

He still had no foundation on the movements and stances for his weapon. How to pair his weapon with mana, etc.

This is where mostly Foundations came into play.

A Foundation was basically a form of legacy or teachings compiled by a person or a group such as a family, cult, etc., related to anything such as weapons, artifacts, mana skills, etc.

Weapon Foundations were one of the major additions in a Synapth’s profile.

These weapon foundations taught a person stances, footwork, and skills of their choice of weapon without the need of a physical teacher.

Ranked from 1 to 5, each level of a foundation represented their rarity and the level of information that came along with it.

At the same time, a 5–star foundation was more difficult to master and control as compared to a 1–star foundation. Caution was needed when choosing one relative to your talent.

At the same time, it wasn’t that easy to acquire a high–level foundation. Especially gun foundations that were much rarer than other common weapons.

Foundations were expensive, mostly found in auctions, vaults of noble families, or the black market.

And if you were lucky enough, as a reward from a Linkgate.

Yes, that was Azariah’s plan. To acquire a gun foundation from a Linkgate.

The theory behind what Linkgates were and how they were formed was too long for Azariah to think about right now.

However, in basic words, they were gates that linked the human world to another dimension.

There were two types of Linkgates: Raid Linkgates and Dungeon Linkgates.

The type that Azariah was going to head into were Dungeon Linkgates.

These were timed two–way gates that connected the human world to a random world with objectives and rewards.

If the objectives weren’t completed in the specific time for a dungeon, the link between the two worlds would permanently establish.

Resulting in monsters stepping out into the real world, which would be a cause of major destruction.

Then again, it was very rare, as almost always a dungeon was cleared many days before its expiration by parties.

Just like that, Azariah was going to head towards one of the same dungeons today. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

To acquire his first gun foundation.

The white–haired boy immediately got to work and started packing his things. There wasn’t much that he needed.

Only spare change of clothes, shoes, and other basic stuff. The rest could be acquired from the market outside the academy.

Opening his terminal, Azariah quickly dropped a message to Alyssa informing her that he wouldn’t be available for the weekend.

The moment it hit send, he put his terminal on DND and proceeded towards the gates.

At the gate, he was checked for his credentials and marked for leaving the academy.

Once done with procedures, he was finally allowed to step outside the academy gates from where he wasted no time at all.

Grabbing a cab, he made his way to the busiest spot in the city.

The City Square.

"100 Evos, Sir." The driver requested and was swiftly paid by Azariah.

As the latter turned back, he was enveloped by the beauty of the world he had created for the first time since arriving here.

There wasn’t much to see in the academy as compared to what he was seeing now.

Hovering cars, 4D billboards, flashy hovering lights and flying robots, etc.

Busy people dressed in long leather coats and suits making their way on the streets in an orderly fashion.

It all seemed to be something straight out of a fantasy.

However, Azariah wasn’t here to just admire all day. He had to move on.

Picking up his pace, he moved through the crowds of people efficiently, turning corners and corners until he arrived in a secluded street.

It wasn’t far from the main area, but the street was narrow enough that only one person could pass at a time.

Azariah’s eyes flicked up to a pub sign in the distance. That was his destination.

Walking up to the inn, he entered inside. Immediately, his nostrils flared up at the smell of alcohol and beer.

It wasn’t a large inn. Looking around, he saw fat drunkards slumped over many tables either unconscious or unable to take it anymore.

Ignoring them, Azariah’s eyes turned to the man at the counter who — despite the substandard conditions of the inn — was wearing a clean tuxedo.

He seemed to be young with a clean black moustache and despite the state of the drunkards, he was focused on cleaning the glasses.

It wasn’t until Azariah walked up to him that he spared him a glance, but even then, he got back to his work after a second.

"I sent a letter to my friend." Azariah spoke up, his eyes on the server.

Even with his words, the latter was still focused on his work.

However, Azariah wasn’t done yet.

"On the way, I dropped it. Someone picked it up and put it in your pocket."

It was finally after these words that the server put down the glass and looked up at him.

"I’ll need that letter." Azariah spoke the last line of the code.

The server stared at him for a few seconds in silence before lowering himself on the ground and producing a letter and a mask.

Without so much as a word between the two, Azariah grabbed the mask from the table and headed outside.

He had done the first step.
