Master Of None-Chapter 2838. Tracking Ancient Monsters

Scylla became very busy since there was a plan of action for where the merfolk could begin to build and clear. It was even better since many of the corals were harmless and actually created ideal environments for beneficial monsters to live.

A small fish monster that Walker spotted was called a sand swimmer. At first it just seemed to be a cute gray sandy looking monster, but after he appraised it he realized the benefits it brought.

While other monsters fought one another or ate the seaweed, this little monster consumed waste and rotting materials. It was perfect to live within the corals here since it would constantly clean up the area and wouldn't fight anyone that lived around here. The perfect natural cleaning system for everyone.

Beyond this, there was also the fact that Walker spotted quite a few of the demi-humans with aquatic traits.

While Scylla primarily had this group under her since they could follow her on such expeditions in to the water, it also appeared that they had formed a powerful camaraderie with the merfolk guards here scouting out a potential new home.

Since this seemed to be a developing bond, Walker spent a little time watching and noticed that it was the aquatic nature and freedom that both liked. Because the demi-human kingdom primarily was focused on the land and the food they could farm for their larger numbers, the water was very protected and watched. So there was very little room for the demi-humans with aquatic traits to move about freely.

The merfolk also desired a larger area to swim and develop without the threats of the deep sea from bothering them. They had many situations where the deep sea proved to claim more merfolk lives than their leaders were comfortable. Especially now that multiple powerful merfolk had come to Genesis acting as representatives at times and leaders for a new generation of merfolk overall.

Since this was bringing them together even more closely, Walker felt uplifted. He also saw why Scylla was working so hard and was less focused on battle as much as she usually would. She could have returned again and been in the coliseum training more guards, looking for the next big warrior to be featured there.

She could have even stayed with her king and ensured he was getting what he needed out of Genesis and also visiting the demi-human kingdom with him as he returned there. But instead, she came here and focused on being a leader.

Whether she would admit it or not, she had become a unique pillar for more than just the demi-human people. She had become a tall and powerful figure for what Genesis should be and would continue to be. Now he would just have to hope she didn't get too full of herself when she found out some of the younger female demi-humans were idolizing her as the goal for female warriors. She might just recruit a small army that way.

His small laugh ended as he swam toward a larger amount of seaweeds growing out of some red and purple coral. As much as exploring and documenting the species was important, Walker was heading this way because in this area traces of ruins were left behind.

The scouts here had already checked what they could and determined the water had washed away and destroyed anything that might have been left in terms of paper or materials. However, Walker wanted to see the remnants of rune formations and carvings on the stone. There were larger pieces that had been covered in algae and coral, making the stones more protected than they would otherwise be if exposed to sunlight and the movement of water currents.

'Large beak sun fish

This species of monster is slow and steady. It moves about to capture more of the sun's rays and allows the algae within its body to grow. It only needs to use its tough earthen beak to consume rocks a few times a day to get the minerals the algae needs to grow properly. Otherwise, it has no need to eat anything.

It is often hunted for its scales which are clear and conduct light mana very well. Otherwise, it is not eaten by many predators due to the fact that it is mostly hollow within its body, hence why it is often swept up in water currents…'

The monsters around seemed harmless enough, maybe they were slowly breaking apart the ruins as nature took it back in, but otherwise everything was pretty clear. The rocks he saw were covered in green but he could use mana to sense the forms of carved rune formation marks on them.

He also noticed the sand filled and gravel filled areas where these ruins continued under the ground. The water had filled it over time ruining whatever could have been found, but surprisingly, the larger pieces of what Walker could only assume were walls had enough to read.

"These are carved names. They kept a record of the people who lived here before the monsters claimed it." Fleur flitted about around him, Walker had sensed her waking up and appearing in the water since she had absorbed enough natural mana with all the naturally formed elemental runes in this unexplored continent. So she decided to see things a bit differently.

When she looked closely at what Walker was examining, her silent feelings of sadness were the same as his. She also followed his gaze to a larger section of a wall and partially, what might have been an entrance. The words there seemed to be cut through the rune formations, as if carved in haste and damaged more over time.

"This is a warning left behind as they fled. Fleur, can you help me clear off the algae?" With Fleur helping using natural mana to encourage the algae to detach and drift in the currents as it would in its later life cycle, Walker saw a new way to encourage plants and other monsters to be less violent in the future. Natural mana held so many secrets and understanding how it influenced the world would assist him more than he could ever explain out loud.

"Flee from the night. They can fly now and are hunting anyone in the open. The mountain mages should be the best hope."

The harshly scrawled carved message would have been right by the entrance to this ruined tower. If these people had fled from it, then whatever could fly was so dangerous that this tower had no way to defend from them.

However, he also found that someone had been carving more. It was similar to the ancient ruins where the ancient humans and dwarves had been. Their carvings in stone had been rougher like this, very much like exaggerated pictures drawn by children rather than extremely detailed art used in the monster encyclopedias being produced nowadays.

Four wings looked like they had been made the same as a beetle, clear and with small veins. Eight legs the same as a spider, but the head of a mosquito with a piercing snout just like a spear or needle. Then there were the eyes, several all on the body instead of the head where eyes were for most other monsters. It seemed more like a monster from the mind of someone having a nightmare.

Yet, Walker hadn't seen evidence of monsters like these anywhere. Just below the partially carved drawing, another note. "Father said they come out at night to eat, so we have to stay inside."

It was all very clear that this was a species of monster that had been tough and dangerous since it learned to fly. The question was, what happened to it and did they still exist in some capacity now in today's age?

A quick wave of his hand, and the entire chunk of wall with the messages and the image carved on them was stored away. It made the water cloudy with sand and silt but it wasn't too much of a problem. Walker even noticed some small sandy worms squirming back under the sands after being exposed all of the sudden.

He turned and swam back, finding a few researchers to begin asking questions. He knew he would have to go back to the main camp and ask as well. There should be more records of a dangerous monster like this. That should help them track down if it had any connections to monsters today or if they were sealed away like other monsters.

He had a bad feeling that there were monsters sealed by the ancient mages since that was the best that they could do. Since that could be the case, he might have to worry about more monsters of the sort being out there waiting to be accidentally released. Or their descendants finding a way to get out and spread even more.
