Modern World Warlock-Chapter 286: Memories of an Old Friend
After Dante threw Udras back inside the mansion, he ended up crashing the fight between Megan and Vesnia.
The two women were initially confused when Udras' body broke through the wall, and when Dante arrived, Vesnia raised her guard.
Still, while the female Death Knight was glaring at Dante with precaution, the warlock couldn't help feeling like he knew the woman.
"Do I know you?" Dante pondered as Udras stood up from the ground, shaking the debris off his body.
"I don't believe so, no…" Vesnia replied, clenching her curved sword tightly.
"That sword is from the Shadow-Blade Assassins, is it not?" Dante continued his interrogation.
"Hmm, so you know about us," Vesnia commented.
Dante, not convinced of what he was seeing, crossed his arms as he kept inspecting the Death Knight with his eyes, scanning her up and down.
"What's your name?" Dante inquired.
The Death Knight seemed to hesitate for a moment, but as she raised her sword and planted her feet firmly on the ground, she answered. "Vesnia…"
'Vesnia…?' Dante thought, casually placing a hand on his chin and ignoring the intense atmosphere.
Suddenly, as if he had remembered something important, the warlock's eyes widened with realization.
"Could you be… Valeria's little sister?" Dante asked, his tone and expression much more serious than before.
Vesnia was wearing her helm, so nobody was able to look at her expression. However, her body language showed that she was taken aback as she took one step backward.
"How do you know that name?" Vesnia asked.
Nonetheless, Dante didn't reply as his anger could be felt all over the room, remembering the old days of his past world.
In the world of Terra, there was an assassin's organization called the Shadow-Blade Assassins, and they were known for their unconventional style of fighting, which they dubbed "Wolf-Stance."
During one of his travels with his party, when Beatrice was still alive and well, Dante's group found themselves completing adventuring requests at a small city when a sudden assassination took place.
The man who was killed was the city's governor, and when Dante and his group investigated the events, they realized that the man had been conducting human experiments and was also selling and buying people.
When Beatrice scanned the crime scene, she thought she recognized some of the patterns that were left on the walls, and after finding a small trail of mana, the group followed it into a forest next to the city.
Inside the forest, they were surrounded by assassins clad in black armor and wielding curved swords. However, Beatrice took a few steps forward and called the name "Valeria," prompting the assassins to lower their weapons.
"Beatrice…?" Said a woman with long black hair, who came down from her hiding spot in the trees to greet them.
Valeria was a high-ranking assassin for the Shadow-Blades, and she was a good friend of Beatrice after she healed Valeria's little sister from an illness.
They had become friends years before Beatrice formed her party with Dante and the others, and the priestess had even invited Valeria to join them. Nonetheless, the woman was already quite busy with her responsibilities as an assassin.
After Dante and his group met Valeria, they all had a celebration that night, and the warlock inquired more about Valeria out of sheer curiosity.
Both Valeria and her little sister had been born from members of the Shadow-Blade Assassins, which meant that they would have to walk the same path as their parents.
However, after their parents died on a mission, Valeria took it upon herself to take care of her little sister.
"If I become strong enough, then Vesnia won't have to follow this path!" Valeria said after chugging down a drink.
The woman believed that if she could become the strongest assassin in the world, there would be no need for her sister to become one as well, and she wanted nothing but for Vesnia to be happy.
After that interaction, Dante and his group met Vesnia a couple more times along their travels, and even though she wasn't an official member of their party, she was considered a good friend of theirs.
They fought together to bring down corrupted governments and monsters, and they partied together whenever their jobs were successful.
When the warlock looked back and thought about the last time he saw Valeria, it was even before Beatrice was taken to hell, and it had been such a long time that he couldn't clearly remember.
Now that a Death Knight with the name of Vesnia, wielding the swords of the Shadow-Blades, stood before him, he felt a sense of anger deep within him.
"What happened…?" Dante muttered under his breath, his intimidating aura growing by the second.
Glancing at Vesnia again, Dante saw a remembrance of Valeria smiling and stating her objective of giving her little sister a happy life, prompting him to grit his teeth.
"Malevolent Art: Wrath," Dante whispered, generating an intense gust of wind inside the hallway as a flaming wing appeared on his back.
As the warlock's right arm was encased in shadows and hellfire, he stared at Vesnia with his eyes focused.
"What happened to Valeria?" Dante asked, his tone leaving no room for refutals or negotiations.
"My sister… She was killed by Master," Vesnia replied, her voice slightly monotonous.
Dante lowered his gaze, a mixture of anger and grief coursing through his body, learning that a good friend of his had been dead for a long time.
Moreover, knowing that Valeria's only wish for her sister to be happy had been wholly trampled on only made his anger rise.
"I see…" Dante muttered, the veins on his arms and forehead visible.
Udras raised his arm and pointed it forward, preparing himself to launch a spell toward Dante. However, as soon as the bandaged warlock moved, Dante appeared before him and clawed his torso with his right hand encased in flames.
"I'm talking, Udras. Don't interrupt me…" Dante muttered, glaring at Udras with a hateful look.
