Chapter 167: Chapter 167: Burn (I)

So when asked whether Kael was handsome or not, Sisi could only give an objective reply, "He is very handsome."

Jojo’s face brightened instantly, as if there was finally hope between his father and Sisi. "Then—then do you like him? Daddy always said that to attract a mate, you have to have food, a good den, strength, and then, um... you must be handsome too!"

"I think Daddy has it all, right, Sisi?" Jojo offered his father like some kind of high-quality goods.

The last requirement was completely made up by the boy himself. His father had never told him anything about needing to be handsome to find a mate, because it wasn’t really important to begin with.

But if it helped, then so be it.

Seeing the boy’s enthusiasm made Sisi chuckle. It had been a while since Jojo showed such excitement. The last time she saw that was when he caught his first deer yearling.

"I don’t like a man just because of his looks, Jojo. I care about what’s in his heart," Sisi replied calmly. "What use is a handsome face if he can’t take responsibility for his family?"

Jojo fell silent as Sisi’s answer left no room for further persuasion.

In the end, he simply rested in Sisi’s embrace and fell asleep rather quickly. Sisi placed him back on the bed and continued her needlework.

But she couldn’t help to continue pondering about Jojo’s question.

Would she be interested in Kael because of his looks? No, not really.

Even if he was handsome, beauty would fade eventually. What was the point of settling down based on looks alone?

Besides, she had a more pressing matter to deal with as she waited for Leah to make her move.

"Let’s see if she panics and starts whatever plan she has tonight," Sisi muttered as she glanced at Jojo.

Her heart ached at the thought of Jojo being kicked repeatedly by Leah. Sisi was determined to avenge anyone who had wronged him.

She caressed Jojo’s head and whispered, "Don’t worry, Jojo. I’ll make sure she pays."

Leah sat inside the maid’s quarters late at night, biting her nails anxiously as she wondered how long Ruela would remain unconscious.

She didn’t want to act rashly, especially with Sisi watching her.

But if she didn’t move quickly, Ruela might wake up at any moment and expose her.

’Argh, I can’t wait any longer!’ Leah wanted to scream in frustration. ’I have to do something tonight, or that idiot might wake up by morning.’

’But before I can kill that idiot, I need to distract the guards first. There’s no way I can enter the doctor’s office with so many guards around.’

As she plotted, her eyes darted toward the window, where she could see the main building.

Sisi and Jojo must be asleep by now. It was already past midnight, and although the area was heavily guarded, there were plenty of blind spots at night.

’Yes. If I want to create a distraction, it has to be big—big enough that every guard leaves their post,’ Leah thought, a smirk slowly forming on her lips. ’And I know exactly how to do that.’

She waited until all the other maids were asleep before quietly leaving the quarters and heading toward the empty kitchen.

Of course, she wasn’t there to cook.

She grabbed a torch and checked the jar of gasoline the cooks used to start fires.

Gas was common in human civilizations but rare among beastmen, who usually relied on flint and dry leaves. Because gas was obtained through trade, the cooks always kept the jug in plain sight to prevent accidents.

Thus, finding it was easy.

Leah grabbed a glass bottle, and filled it with gas, enough to spread flames quickly, then headed straight for the main building.

She had studied the area earlier that day and knew the guards’ blind spots well.

Taking advantage of them, she poured the gas along the surroundings.

Yes—this was killing two birds with one stone.

If Sisi died in the fire and Ruela died while everyone was distracted putting it out, it would be perfect. Because that meant nobody was there to punish her, and Leah could go on with her lfie without anymore competition.

There might be casualties, like the little prince, but that was his own fault.

If he hadn’t thrown himself over Sisi earlier, Leah could have stabbed that bitch in the groin and let her bleed to death.

’Such a shame,’ Leah sighed. ’That boy is handsome. I could’ve made him my mate once he grew up. In fact, It’d be even better if I can rule for two generations of kings.’

’But since plans didn’t go smoothly. I’ll just improvise. As long as I get the Beast King, we can always make another pup with him.’

As she raised the torch over the pool of gasoline, Leah reflected on everything that had led to this moment.

She had always been ambitious, ever since she realized she was fated to serve Ruela for the rest of her life.

She refused to accept that fate—especially knowing how stupid Ruela truly was.

Leah was smarter, prettier, and far more capable of being a noble lady.

So why was fate so cruel?

Why was she born to nobodies?

Why did her parents have to die in a war, leaving her an orphan under the previous alpha’s care?

Why couldn’t she be born into a noble family like Ruela, or blessed with power and beauty like Sisi?

Thinking of Sisi, Leah scoffed.

’That bitch must’ve had an easy life. Unlike me, she probably had loving parents, that’s why she looks so well cared for. And even as a witch, she must’ve been born powerful. She never had to struggle... unlike me,’ Leah got angrier the more she thought about the injustice she suffered.

Her hesitation finally disappeared, replaced with a rage that encouraged her to take the last time.

And thus, Leah tossed the torch over a pool of gasoline.
