Mr. CEO's Ex-Wife: A Cunning Comeback-Chapter 469: Thing Back Then Twenty Years Ago
Old Mr. Nelsen knew his grandsons clearly favored Chantelle. It left him feeling conflicted, knowing they might hold a bias against Camille. He wished both girls could get along and be part of one big, happy family.
"Chantelle is my real granddaughter. Do you think I would mistreat her?" Old Mr. Nelsen said sternly. "There’s another reason I chose to adopt her instead. It has to do with your parents..."
Noticing that their grandfather had suddenly become more serious, the three siblings moved closer to him.
"Twenty years ago, Easthan was in chaos. Before your parents disappeared, several prominent figures in Easthan died. My sources told me that your parents were involved in their deaths," Old Mr. Nelsen said in a small voice.
The siblings exchanged confused looks. Ever since they were young, they had only heard good things about their parents from their grandfather and the people who knew them. Now their grandfather was saying their parents were involved in murder. It was hard for them to accept it.
Old Mr. Nelsen hesitated before continuing. "I don’t know the full story, but I do know they did it to protect you and the Nelsen family," he whispered.
"So... are they dead?" Alexander asked in a trembling voice.
Old Mr. Nelsen shook his head. "I’ve always told you they disappeared and would return one day. That’s the truth. They disappeared in the most mysterious way," he said.
"Was their disappearance connected to the murders?" Oscar asked.
Old Mr. Nelsen shook his head again. "Your parents were honorable people. I may not know everything, but I believe they didn’t do anything wrong. Those people who were killed were rotten criminals. But they also held powerful positions. Once they died, do you think their families would let your parents walk free?" His voice trembled as he remembered the past.
The siblings looked at him anxiously. They wanted to understand more about their parents. If their parents had loved each other, then why did their mother marry Roman Bently later on?
"Not long after, your parents were hunted down by those families without mercy. That was when your mother said she saw your father vanish right in front of her eyes!" Old Mr. Nelsen said, raising his voice.
"Vanish?!" Rowan gasped. As an atheist, his first reaction was to wonder if his grandfather was still thinking clearly.
Steve sat up straight as he looked at his three grandchildren. "That’s right. Your father disappeared right in front of your mother."
"That’s impossible. How does something like that even happen? Why would he disappear? Aliens?" Oscar asked. It went against everything he believed about the world.
Steve seemed prepared for their doubt. He waved his hand, signaling them to quiet down before continuing. "I didn’t believe your mother at first when she told me. I sent many of my men to search for your father. I’ve never stopped looking, but he’s still nowhere to be found."
"What happened after that? Why did my mother marry Roman?" Alexander asked. He couldn’t understand it. Did their grandfather drive their mother away because their father disappeared?
He quickly pushed the thought aside. His grandfather was not that kind of man.
"Your mother locked herself in her room after he disappeared. She kept a lucky charm with her and would talk to it. She didn’t even know she was pregnant at the time and almost had a miscarriage."
Steve’s eyes turned cold as he fell into old memories.
"After that, one thing happened after another. Anyone from the Nelsen family who stepped outside ended up injured. It was like a curse we couldn’t escape. We called the police, but every incident was ruled an accident. I hired detectives, too, but they reached the same conclusion."
Rowan didn’t know how to process it. Things like this only happened in movies or novels. But there was no reason for Steve to lie to them.
"Their purpose... was it to force my mother out of hiding?" Alexander asked in a trembling voice.
Steve nodded and let out a heavy sigh. "Your mother was a smart woman. She quickly noticed something was wrong. She fought with me, left the family, sold every property we owned in Easthan, and forced us to move to Carcosa."
The three siblings lowered their heads. They already knew that part. The story of how the lady of the Nelsen family supposedly killed her husband and ran away with the money could still be found online.
They used to wonder why their grandfather and the rest of the Nelsen family never resented her, despite everything. No one ever spoke badly about her. Everyone talked about her with affection.
Now they finally knew the reason behind it.
"I later lost track of your mother," Steve continued. "It wasn’t until Old Mr. Wilson became gravely ill ten years ago that he sent me an email. He wrote about witnessing a group of people forcing a woman off the edge of a cliff while he was hiking."
"He was watching with his binoculars. The group was made up of well-known big shots from Easthan. The deaths of those people meant nothing to them. They seemed to be demanding something from your mother. She refused and chose to jump off the cliff instead."
That instantly riled the brothers up. "Who was there?!"
"Old Mr. Wilson wouldn’t say. He wanted to protect us. He called the police after he saw what happened, but the Wilson Group of Companies collapsed into bankruptcy soon after. If he hadn’t humbled himself and handed over most of the company’s assets, there wouldn’t even be a Wilson Group of Companies today."
Wesley Wilson had also mentioned that Steve’s daughter-in-law had not been pregnant when she fell off the cliff. She had loved his son so deeply that it made no sense for her to give up their child. By that time, they had already established themselves in Carcosa.
"She agreed to marry Roman to protect us?" Rowan finally asked the question that was deeply engraved on his mind long ago.
"We were already in Carcosa at that time. There was no reason for her to tie herself to Roman. And you know your grandfather is much more powerful than the Nelsen family. It wasn’t hard to protect her from leaving Easthan."
Rowan frowned as he poured his grandfather a glass of water. "So she married Roman for a reason. She wanted something from him."
"I thought the same. And I also believe your mother is still alive. They gathered those people there to make them think she was dead, so no one would come after the three of you. After so many years, they eventually gave up. That means your mother took everything they were after and went somewhere they could never reach."
