Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 790: Crystal
"This is the place. It has great lighting, the upper floor is quieter, and the room is soundproof. When I’m downstairs preparing stock, I keep my movements light, and generally, once the door is closed, you can’t hear much."
Scott Sutton nodded slightly, indicating his interest in viewing the apartment.
Evelyn Linton chuckled awkwardly since Scott hadn’t said a word since entering, making her think he was a bit odd.
"Um... can I ask for your name? You don’t seem to be a student, right? Do you work around here?"
Scott Sutton raised his hand and gestured as if using sign language, but he was just making it up, intending to convey to Evelyn that he couldn’t speak.
Evelyn understood immediately and looked at Scott apologetically, saying, "Sorry, I don’t understand sign language. Type it on your phone, please."
Scott pulled out his phone from his pocket. As he typed, Evelyn peeked over and couldn’t help but comment, "Miss, you’re really tall, nearly six-three, right? Are you a model?"
Scott didn’t answer, only typing out a line, "I’ve decided to rent the room. Do I need to sign any contract?"
Evelyn didn’t expect him to decide so quickly and smiled, "Well, the rent... since it’s a bit cluttered downstairs and there’s effectively no living room, I charge a little less than others. But as you know, rent in this area isn’t cheap. A whole set costs tens of thousands a month; even a single room is five to six thousand. I’ll just charge you twenty-five hundred a month. Is that okay?"
Scott nodded without hesitation, and Evelyn promptly fetched paper and pen from the room. They drafted a simple contract, and he paid three months’ rent.
With his long hair and a face considered delicate among boys, plus a name that sounds feminine, Evelyn never suspected Scott’s gender, and the rental deal was settled.
From their brief interaction, Scott gathered little else, but he was certain that this girl was quite a penny-pincher.
Otherwise, why would someone who can afford a house here beam with joy over a 2500 rent and emphasize splitting utility costs three times?
Despite being frugal, she was considerate. After collecting the rent, she showed Scott around the room, explained that from eight to twelve she’d be livestreaming, and emphasized not to disturb her.
Scott soon got a general understanding of Evelyn’s job and quickly found her livestreaming platform and room.
With 210,000 followers, she wasn’t a top streamer but had some popularity. Her streams mainly involved outfit try-ons and sales.
Typically, such work requires a team to share duties. Didn’t this girl want to hire staff and handle everything on her own just to save money?
"Oh, by the way, Crystal, should we order some hot pot for dinner? If we order together, we can save on delivery fees."
Hearing "Crystal" gave Scott goosebumps, yet he had to pretend like nothing was amiss.
Taking out his phone, he checked the time, roughly dinner time. Initially planning to eat at home, Evelyn’s suggestion made him change his mind, and he nodded in agreement.
"Hold on, I haven’t rinsed my hair yet, I’ll be quick. I’ll come find you in your room in a bit."
Scott returned to his room and called home from the balcony.
Before long, Evelyn knocked on the door, and Scott was momentarily stunned upon opening it.
She genuinely didn’t see him as a man, arriving with freshly washed hair and wearing a camisole, apparently without much underneath...
Evelyn approached with her phone, "I’ve ordered my food; take a look and decide what you’d like."
Scott opened his mouth but suddenly realized that speaking would expose him. He immediately swallowed his words, shifted his gaze away from Evelyn’s neckline, and reached for her phone, randomly picking a few dishes.
Evelyn tiptoed slightly and peeked over, "Let’s use my phone to pay. Later, just transfer the amount to me via WhatsApp."
Scott checked; it totaled only a bit over fifty bucks. This girl really was a penny-pincher.
"Oh, by the way, are you staying tonight? I noticed you haven’t brought any luggage."
Scott typed on his phone: No luggage.
Evelyn was momentarily stunned after reading, and looked up to ask, "Are you planning to go buy some? There’s a supermarket nearby with everything you need. I’m going live soon, so I can’t accompany you. If it’s not urgent, you can get essentials from the convenience store downstairs. I’m available tomorrow during the day. Also, I have spare clean bedding here; if you don’t mind, you can use it."
Scott nodded graciously. This young girl was pretty kind-hearted, immediately fetching things from her room, assuming he was mute. Perhaps out of sympathy, she took extra care of him.
As she helped make the bed, she commented, "These are quite new; just make do. Living away from home means expenses everywhere, so it’s best to save where you can."
"No need to buy too much for a rental; it’ll be a hassle to move later."
Scott wasn’t really listening to what Evelyn said, his focus and attention entirely on her.
Her nightdress wasn’t very long, and as she kneeled on the bed to make it, the dress seemed barely to cover anything, leaving Scott a bit flustered.
He felt that if he didn’t soon clarify his gender to this girl, there’d be trouble.
"Alright, it’s still a bit chilly at night, so this thicker quilt will keep you warmer when sleeping."
Scott nodded, and Evelyn hopped off the bed, put on slippers, and said, "I need to do my makeup and prepare for the stream, so I’ll leave you be."
"Oh, also, I have extra sleepwear. There’s a loose T-shirt dress you could wear. I’ll go get it for you. Take a shower and get some rest early. I’ll accompany you to shop tomorrow."
With that, she ran back to her room and soon returned with a Winnie the Pooh printed, loose T-shirt dress. She handed it to Scott, "You’re tall, so it might be a bit short, but just make do for tonight."
Scott took it, glanced down to inspect it.
Evelyn immediately turned, heading to her room while saying, "I’m off to do makeup. Remember to call me when the food arrives."
Finally, she paused, looked back with a slightly embarrassed smile, and reminded, "Oh, and don’t forget to transfer the money to me."
