Chapter 215: You’re Invited

Anji had been gone for some time now. The Ginkgo Forest was peaceful as usual, but the silence was not comforting at all. Yan Ping brought food up as usual because "Ci Wang" was studying in isolation. However, the food was either fed to forest animals or eaten by her. She did not think the Celestial Dragon Sect would give their consent for the operation. Hence, the blind prophet was doing some intensive self-studying of her own.

Yet, when a recorded message reply came before the week was over, she paused. It was from her student. She did say she was going to try to convince her father. Did she succeed? Part of Yan Ping wished Zhao Mingfeng would continue being stubborn for a little longer to resist the inevitable. Even if Elder Quan’s little experiment had proven a success, restructuring the meridian’s artificial core seals was not the same as rewriting the seal on someone’s golden core.

"Shifu!" Anji’s bright voice greeted through the recorded message. "My father has agreed to it on one condition — you have to attend my eighth birthday banquet in person at the Celestial Dragon Sect before I can return. He says that if you cannot attend in person, he cannot agree to it. The official invitation is sent together with this message. Anji will be waiting for you!"

How brazen. Yan Ping couldn’t help but smirk at her cheeky disciple. Anyone else would be subjected to disciplinary measures, but not her. If anything, Yan Ping could tell just how hard Anji worked to earn her family’s approval. Zhao Mingfeng must have made a difficult decision, and this was his act of grace. On the surface, it was an invitation. However, Yan Ping knew it was more than a formality. Zhao Mingfeng needed to see her in person to understand that his baby girl would be fine.

Recording a quick reply of her own, Yan Ping accepted the invitation token. She would attend the birthday party with a gift of her own. It was more like an apology gift packaged with a birthday celebration vibe. However, it was the least she could do out of gratitude.

After the messenger dove received the new message and a few snacks, it flew off again to deliver the reply. It would take approximately two weeks to travel by horse. However, Yan Ping was blind. She had no idea how to ride one and preferred to travel on foot if she wasn’t flying.

Time was not on her side if she wanted to attend the birthday banquet on time and prepare the gift. Ordinarily, Yan Ping would design the spells by herself. However, since Anji joined the sect, she had been seeking out others for collaboration more. Today, she would finally descend the Ginkgo Sanctuary and search for someone Anji was already rather familiar with for help.

Senior Researcher Ke Xing was not expecting a visitor. Assistant Hu had long recovered from his injury and was busy tidying the courtyard when he saw the sect master swoop in from above.

"Where is she?" Yan Ping cut to the chase. There was no time to spare.

When Assistant Hu told Yan Ping that his childhood friend was in the backyard aligning telescopes for the star gazing tonight, the stunned assistant could not stop her from disappearing in an instant. Slightly concerned but also fearful of their strict sect master, Assistant Hu prayed that Senior Researcher Ke had not done anything illegal to warrant an investigation by the sect master.

Ke Xing was polishing the new glass lens when a figure in white landed beside her silently out of nowhere. Spooked by the supernatural, she shrieked and almost dropped her precious lens.

...

Yan Ping did not react to the scream. It was not the first time her presence scared someone. It happened a lot less lately because she had been living in seclusion and making announcements to inform others of her presence. Living with Anji also meant she had gotten used to deliberately making noise whenever she was there to alert the girl of her presence. However, old habits die hard. In her haste, she had reverted to her usual nature.

"I’ll extend your research deadline by five years personally if you help me with this favour," Yan Ping cut to the chase as soon as Ke Xing collected her wits. "I need a long-distance voice and image transmitting spell. If image transmission is not possible, at the very least, voice transmission. Anji’s birthday is in two weeks, but you only have a week to do this before I leave for the Celestial Dragon Sect. I trust you and your assistant know better than to blab about this to anyone else."

Stunned by the sudden information dump, Ke Xing and Assistant Hu blinked mutely. Yan Ping counted the seconds as their incompetence tested her patience. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"Are you going to stay gawking or get moving? I need a long-distance voice transmitting spell in a week!"

That did the trick as her bark snapped them into motion. Immediately, Assistant Hu raced to grab the materials, and Senior Researcher Mo asked for details about the project. If there was anyone who was an expert in coordinate teleportation in this sect, it would be her. Also, there was no way they could remain reluctant when Anji was the beneficiary of this gift.

Fired up and ready to complete this on time, the small team poured over books and design ideas.

"Sect Leader Yan, it is our great honour to be working on this project with you," Assistant Hu bowed, serving tea while his childhood friend started drafting several concepts for the new spell. "Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help."

Yan Ping thought about it. Supposing Ci Wang was still in the Gingko Sanctuary, someone had to eat the food Aunt Wine prepared. She was truthfully sick of eating, even if the food was delicious.

"You’re on meal duty," she told the short man. "Keep track of the time. I have to collect Ci Wang’s meals on time without fail to keep up the cover. When I leave for the Celestial Dragon Sect, you will continue doing it on my behalf until I return with our successor."

Bowing to accept the new responsibility, Assistant Hu wished them both luck and took his leave. Although he could not contribute much to the research, he could play his small part as the timekeeper. Smiling to himself as he left to tidy the study desk, Assistant Hu wondered if he could slip in a little gift of his own for the birthday girl before Yan Ping left.
