Murim's Weakest Princess-Chapter 247: Whimsical Sage
Anji had many questions about the new memory crystal her teacher had chosen for her next viewing. This sage had to be a genius because they only needed one hundred and twenty years to ascend. However, the fact that the time dilation of their life would take Anji about ten days to finish viewing made her hesitate.
There was a fine line between genius and insanity. This Whimsical Sage was both. They cultivated a unique art that was not recorded in any martial sect or cultivation manuals. Although the Mystical Qilin Sect documented his unique path of enlightenment, they were the only person who could ever accomplish this sense of madness.
"I have not seen this sage’s memory," Yan Ping confessed. "However, my teacher has. In fact, she extracts parts of the Whimsical Sage’s memories to use in simulations for the final trials of those who wish to become Elders of the sect. Intellectually, the Whimsical Sage is the most difficult to understand. However, I would advise you to look past the actions and try to study the intentions and emotions instead. After all, there were not many people my teacher respected in her life. The Whimsical Sage was someone she deeply respected and would revisit this memory crystal often enough for me to remember the name."
Intrigued but doubtful, Anji mentally braced herself as Yan Ping set up the new spell. According to the catalogue, the Whimsical Sage underwent many phases of life, adhering to the same principles. There were three golden rules that they lived by: never deny desires, never refuse opportunities, and never sleep in the same spot twice.
The first two principles, Anji understood. The last part? She was only told that the whimsical sage was a woman, and while she was known to sleep in weird places, she had never shown any sexual interest in her life. Her cultivation path would have made it into the orthodox methods because she was a virgin until the day she ascended. However, the records of her bathing in public under a storm made many people reconsider it.
"Are you ready?" Anji heard her shifu ask. Truthfully, not really. However, she would never be mentally prepared enough, even if she had all the time in the world. It was better to dive right in.
Yan Ping wished her student all the best and activated the spell, watching as the memory crystal glowed and pulled Anji into its space. This would be the most interesting memory crystal. She hoped Anji would finally be able to find a clue to what she needed to know about her own form of Compassion.
Contrary to popular belief, compassion was not merely about unconditional love or kindness. There was more to it. Empty compassion was a very different kind of compassion. It went beyond altruistic acts to a way of life. The act of giving without needing to receive in its final form was empty compassion. The ability to completely let go of expectations in the act of giving is Empty Compassion, which differs from person to person.
Truthfully, Yan Ping should have ascended. Her teacher told her that right after she was finally released from the isolated training. Her hair turned completely white, and she was reborn with a new form of enlightenment. However, much like a curse that the seventh sect leader had seen, Yan Ping was a sage bound to life and not the afterlife. Perhaps the longest reigning sect leader already knew that what the Mystical Qilin Sect needed was not a leader but a guardian. It was one of the reasons she waited eight hundred years to ascend, only after knowing Yan Ping had locked herself firmly in this cage.
Anji groaned even in her meditative state. The Whimsical Sage must be quite the character to cause such a reaction from her usually disciplined disciple. It had not even been an hour, but she was already groaning. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Leaving Anji alone for the next ten days, Yan Ping wondered what type of compassion Anji would decide on. Given the righteous nature she inherited from her parents, Anji must want to bind herself to duty and justice. Her heart of gold would want nobody to suffer, and parts of the vision Yan Ping received gave her a glimpse into the choices her young successor would make. However, there was always a sense of unease in those visions.
Unlike now, Anji appeared almost no different from how she was before she started simulation training. The fact that she was seen travelling outside the Mystical Qilin Sect with her brothers told Yan Ping she must have completed the successor trials before she became an adult. Yan Ping could not see in colours. However, she could see energy signatures in the visions she experienced. Anji’s qi was chaotic in those visions despite her calm behaviour.
With many matters to attend to, Yan Ping left Anji alone in the secret cultivation chamber. Although barely an hour had passed in reality, Anji felt as if the time she spent with the Whimsical Sage was more traumatic than being with the Grim Reaper of Duan City. Nothing made sense, and there was only so much energy Anji could muster as an audience member in this memory crystal. The Whimsical Sage had violated so many rules and laws, treating customs and traditions like toys and spitting in the face of reason. Her logic had no logic, and while none of the things she did were wrong in a moral sense, Anji found it very difficult to say she was right.
Why would anyone eat dog food willingly? It was not as if the Whimsical Sage had a financial problem. Even beggars would rather steal human food than bicker with dogs on all fours to fight them for territory and a free meal. Yet, the Whimsical Sage would growl at dogs and challenge them for food regularly as a child. Naturally, her parents were so embarrassed that they tried to lock her up for good.
Unfortunately, the Whimsical Sage was far too smart and unhinged to be locked up. She proved to be more trouble than anyone could handle, so they left all the doors and windows unlocked one night, pretending to sleep while she sneaked out. The moment she left their house, they quickly packed their things and left town, fleeing without their crazy daughter to start life anew in a place that did not know their faces.
Truthfully, part of Anji felt pity for the Whimsical Sage. However, she soon realised it was all a ploy. The Whimsical Sage never fought with dogs for food ever again after her family left. Instead, she trained them to steal her food regularly while she took over the abandoned house her family had left behind and lived a life of relative comfort all at the age of six.
