My Amnesic Ex Married My Sister, So I Married His Uncle-Chapter 123: A Convenient Snatch
The smile on Kiana Sterling’s face abruptly froze.
Ethan Rhodes himself seemed stunned for a moment after he spoke.
Jonathan Rhodes’s advice to keep Kiana stable was still ringing in his ears. But he had been alone at home for days, letting his imagination run wild until he felt he was going crazy.
Seeing the look on Kiana’s face, he snapped back to his senses and quickly tried to explain himself.
"Kiana, don’t misunderstand. I didn’t mean anything by it. It was just a casual question. You know I just got my memory back, so I’ve been overthinking things a lot lately..."
He was completely unaware that he was only digging himself into a deeper hole as Kiana’s face grew increasingly pale.
"Ethan," Kiana Sterling interrupted him, "it’s okay. I’ve told you before, it doesn’t matter what you do... I... I don’t have Stella’s contact information. If you want it, I can help you ask for it..."
The moment she finished speaking, tears began to fall.
Seeing her tears, Ethan Rhodes frowned and ran a hand through his hair.
"Don’t cry. I really didn’t mean anything by it. Just pretend I never said it, okay?"
Then, he rather roughly pulled Kiana into his arms, occasionally murmuring, "Don’t cry."
Kiana lay against his chest, her gaze dark and somber.
After a long moment, she wiped her tears and pushed Ethan Rhodes away.
"I’m fine now, Ethan. Go ahead and have some fruit. I’m heading back."
Kiana Sterling picked up her bag and walked away, her steps unsteady.
Ethan Rhodes suddenly heard a dull thud. Just like that, Kiana had fainted without any warning.
Ethan Rhodes and Yolanda Thorne rushed her to the hospital.
Once Kiana Sterling’s condition stabilized, Yolanda Thorne finally found a moment to ask what happened.
"What happened? Kiana went to bring you fruit, so why did she suddenly faint?"
Ethan Rhodes didn’t quite dare to answer. "I don’t know what happened either," he could only say. "This is a chronic problem for Kiana."
It wasn’t as if her poor health was a recent development; everyone was well aware of it.
Yolanda Thorne fell silent, her brow furrowed in thought.
Looking at the pale-faced Kiana Sterling on the hospital bed, ’she started to have some doubts.’
They had chosen Kiana partly because of the affection she’d shown when their son was in a coma, and partly because she was genuinely outstanding among Jandor’s elite young women.
’At the time, her poor health hadn’t seemed like a big deal.’
’After all, neither family was short on money. What problem was there that money couldn’t solve?’
’Kiana and Ethan were already engaged; marriage was the next step.’
’Her original plan was for them to have a child as soon as possible. That way, they could secure a larger share of the inheritance after the patriarch passed away.’
’But looking at her now, her health really was a problem.’
’If she was like this now, who knew how much trouble a pregnancy would be?’
’She had privately looked into it, and while Kiana’s illness was unlikely to be hereditary... what if it was?’
Just as she was lost in thought, someone burst through the door to the hospital room.
Yolanda Thorne turned her head and saw that Madeline Jennings had arrived.
Madeline Jennings’s brows were tightly knit. She nodded at Yolanda Thorne in greeting before asking, "What happened? Our Kiana hasn’t had an episode like this in a long time."
Yolanda Thorne immediately took this to mean that Madeline Jennings was accusing them of not taking good care of Kiana.
She wasn’t about to accept that.
Although she smiled, her tone was less than friendly.
"Madeline, Kiana’s health has always been a chronic issue. Is it possible she never fully recovered from before?"
And just like that, she threw the responsibility back.
Madeline Jennings, of course, understood the implication.
But she still had to rely on the Rhodes Family. Madeline Jennings pursed her lips and turned to ask, "What did the doctor say? It’s not a relapse, is it?"
The period when Kiana had been sick and Madeline Jennings had accompanied her abroad had been difficult.
She’d struggled to adapt to the lifestyle and food in a foreign country, all while living in constant fear over Kiana’s illness.
She never wanted to go through days like that again.
That’s why she got so nervous every time Kiana fainted.
She was terrified it was a relapse. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Fortunately, Yolanda Thorne shook her head. "No, it’s not that. Just anemia combined with exhaustion. The child just needs to rest."
Only then did Madeline Jennings relax.
She walked over and patted Ethan Rhodes’s hand. "Ethan, we’re entrusting our Kiana to you. You must take good care of her."
The man who would usually have made a solemn promise simply smiled at her this time.
Madeline Jennings vaguely sensed something was off, but before she could dwell on it, Yolanda Thorne cut in.
"Alright, let Ethan stay with her. Madeline, we should head back."
Madeline Jennings had been in the middle of a mahjong game with a few other socialites when she got the call and had rushed over.
Knowing Kiana wasn’t in any serious trouble and that Ethan Rhodes was there with her, she didn’t overthink it and left with Yolanda Thorne.
Kiana Sterling still hadn’t woken up. Ethan Rhodes sat alone by her hospital bed.
His thoughts drifted uncontrollably to Stella Sterling.
’Owen Rhodes was away on a business trip. There was no better time to find Stella.’
’Once he’s back, will I still have a chance to sit down and talk with her?’
He took out his phone and asked Leo Quinn if he knew how to contact Stella Sterling.
Leo Quinn was a little surprised when he received the message.
Except for that one time Ethan Rhodes had gotten drunk outside Jandor University, he had always been very dismissive of Stella Sterling.
Why the sudden interest in her contact information today?
Given the recent signs that Ethan Rhodes’s memory was returning, Leo Quinn didn’t give him the information directly. Instead, he asked if something was wrong.
Ethan Rhodes clicked his tongue in annoyance.
’He couldn’t believe Leo was being so secretive with him.’
He had no idea about Leo Quinn’s good intentions.
His good friend was worried that one rash move would completely offend Owen Rhodes, leaving Ethan with nothing.
Ethan Rhodes could only offer the excuse that Kiana had fainted and was in the hospital, and he wanted Stella to come check on her.
Leo Quinn had heard from Ethan Rhodes about Kiana’s poor health, so he didn’t doubt the story.
As it happened, Leo Quinn did have a way to get Stella Sterling’s contact information.
He was about to ask for it himself when a memory of a past event surfaced in his mind.
’Stella Sterling wasn’t the same person she used to be,’ Leo Quinn thought. ’She’s Owen Rhodes’s wife now. What if Ethan really does have improper designs on her? What am I going to do if Owen’s wrath is directed at me?’
So, instead of asking himself, he forwarded a contact to Ethan Rhodes and told him to ask that person instead.
Ethan Rhodes was so focused on trying to get Stella Sterling’s contact information that he didn’t notice the person on the bed behind him had already woken up.
Kiana Sterling watched his intense concentration, her gaze growing darker and darker.
’It wasn’t that she was deeply in love with Ethan Rhodes.’
’But back then, he was the man Stella had liked, so she had snatched him away.’
’She never expected Stella to turn around and marry Owen Rhodes.’
’Regardless of how genuine her feelings for Ethan were, he was hers now. If he went back to Stella at a time like this, how could she possibly save face?’
She suddenly remembered something, and an idea began to form.
Once her plan was settled, she let out a soft cough.
Ethan Rhodes was about to make a call when he heard the sound. He immediately rushed to the bedside. "Kiana, you’re awake! How are you feeling?"
Kiana Sterling gave him a weak smile. "Ethan, you’re tired of me, aren’t you? I’m sorry. This is all my fault."
A pang of guilt hit Ethan Rhodes.
"Don’t be ridiculous, of course not. I’ll go get the doctor to come check on you."
