Chapter 90: Elijah And Mireya

"Have you seen my brother?" Mireya asked Elijah.

She had been bugging her about Caden for the last three hours.

"How many times do I have to tell you that I don’t know where he went? Maybe he’s in some place with Alira. So please, will you stop asking me?" He said with annoyance.

He was on the sofa, reading a book while Mireya was lying on the bed. She was staring at the ceiling and looked so bored. It’s been two days that Caden and Alira didn’t come to Queen’s so Mireya was a bit anxious.

"If you’re so worried about your brother, why do you stick with me? You should have stayed with him and not me. You’re annoying. Besides, you’re dead and a ghost. Even if he’s here, he still won’t see you." He exclaimed.

She felt a little sadness at his remarks. But Elijah was only stating the fact. Her brother couldn’t even feel her presence.

"I don’t have a choice. You’re the only one who can see me." She pouted.

Elijah sighed deeply. "Fine. Stop pouting. You look like a duck."

She sat on the bed and glared at him. She didn’t realize she was already admiring his face. Elijah had black, wavy hair and black eyes. His skin was pinkish and glowing. He was flawless. With his aura and appearance, Elijah could pass as a Korean idol.

"Elijah, what do you want to do aside from being an introvert prince?" She suddenly asked,

Although he was surprised by her sudden question, he closed his book and crossed his arms. He stared at the girl with brown hair and blue eyes who was anticipating to his answer.

"Elisa inherited mom’s hotel business so she would have something to do after she graduate from college. As for me, once your brother ascended the throne, I will have to assist and help him. As a prince of Flousia, I have a duty to serve the King."

Mireya hugged her legs. "Have you ever thought of becoming the crown prince? You’re the only son of the current King. It’s your birthright."

His eyes flicked to her and away again, as if thinking of what he would say.

"To tell you the truth, when I was a kid, I had that kind of thinking. I always ask why I wasn’t chosen. But when I saw how hard your brother works, and how he managed to do what he had done for the country, I always think he’s the best and the right choice to inherit the throne."

"Why do you think he’s the one?" She asked, curiosity piqued.

Elijah chuckled. "Because I’ve seen it. How he handles things and how he helped father running the country."

Mireya felt relieved. "Thank you. I don’t want you to have a grudge against my brother. You’re too nice, Elijah. I like you."

He was surprised. He wasn’t sure if it was just a slipped of her tongue or she was serious about what she said. His heart skipped and felt a little nervous.

"What did you say?" He stared at her, deep wrinkles appeared on his brow.

"You’re nice. Even though I always disturb you and I know how annoying I am, you never push me away. I’ve been with you for years, but you always help me and you did all my favors and requests. Sometimes I thought of being your girl. I actually envy Natalia. I always ask myself, what if I’m not dead? Will you marry me instead of her?"

He looked at her with heightened passion. "What kind of question was that? Besides, even if you’re alive, we can’t marry each other because we’re cousins."

"We’re half-cousins. Your father and my mom were half-siblings. They only share fifty percent of the Hulls’ blood. Wait, does it mean we only have one-fourth of the royal family’s blood?"

Elijah wanted to laugh. He shook his head in amusement with her. "I really can’t follow you sometimes. But even though we’re half-cousins, I doubt they will allow us to get married. Flousia is a conservative country."

"But isn’t it normal for royals to marry their cousins?" She insisted.

"Why do you insist? You’re not being serious, right?"

But he was stunned when he saw Mireya looking so firm with what she had asked.

"Do you love Natalia? Or do you even like the girl?" She blurted.

His eyes widened, and his heart started pounding. He felt like he was on a hot seat, being roasted by Mireya.

"What the hell, Mireya? Why do you have to ask me those questions? Natalia is my fiance." He said.

Mireya got out of bed to sit beside him. She stared directly into his eyes, waiting for him to answer. He let out a deep sigh and scratched his head.

"I don’t like her in a romantic way. She was my friend when we were kids and I only see her as a sister."

"Then why don’t you break the engagement? If you’re not happy with her. And to be honest, I don’t think your marriage will last once you get married. She always whine, rant, curse at you and cries as if she was the victim. Your relationship with her is unhealthy. It’s too toxic." She commented.

Elijah smiled bitterly. "If only I can do it that easily. I have a duty as a prince of Flousia. I can’t just break what has already been announced."

She chuckled. "Duty? Like babysitting an immature crybaby?"

He didn’t answer. Mireya had a point. His relationship with Natalia was already toxic, and they weren’t married yet. But he couldn’t just ask to cancel the engagement because Natalia swore to kill herself if he leave her.

"How about me? If I am alive, will you marry me?" Mireya exclaimed.

Elijah was taken aback. He didn’t expect those questions from Mireya.

He looked at her face and he admit she was beautiful. What he loved about her was her eyes-it was calming, like the clear blue sky. Her pouty natural pinkish lips were small and looked soft, like a marshmallow. He always imagined it being savored by him. He loved watching her delicate skin glow under the light or the under ray of sun. Her bare face was fresh and pretty, even without a makeup on.

On the other hand, Natalia had a short and red-hair paired with an amber-colored eyes. She was elegant and charming in her own way. She was aggressive and fierce, but she was really a crybaby.

Natalia was her friend. They were quite close when they were kids. But everything changed when she fell in love with him. He rejected her politely, but she couldn’t accept it.

After the rejection, she locked herself in her bedroom and starved herself for five days. She never stopped crying. Her parents became concern when she got hospitalized and threatened everyone to kill herself.

Natalia’s father was an elder and a member of the royal council. He begged the King to save his daughter, so Elijah’s parents talked to him and told him about the engagement. They didn’t ask him if he wanted it. They just told him it’s to save Natalia’s life. So he obeyed.

He nodded. "Yes."

Mireya flashed a sweet smile at him. "Really? Even though we’re cousins?"

Elijah took a deep breath and smiled back at her. "Yes. But I still don’t know why you suddenly asked me those questions."

"I was curious. Because you don’t see Natalia as your wife. You hate her." She said.

"I don’t hate her. I hate that she forced me into this engagement. I hate the things she did just to get what she wanted." He whispered.

Mireya felt bad for Elijah. He was tied forever in a noxious relationship with Natalia. She wanted to comfort him, but she couldn’t.

She never tried touching him. Elijah also didn’t try to reach out his hand. They were both scared. Mireya was scared that her hand would just pass through his body. And he was afraid she would disappear if he touch her.

"I always wanted to feel your warmth." She mumbled.

He stared at her for a long moment. "Did it hurt? When you were killed, did you feel any pain?"

She nodded. "Of course. I was an unborn child, but I felt an excruciating pain. I felt like my body was being torn apart when that knife cut through my skin. I didn’t know what was happening. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t ask my mom to stop the pain and save me. But what hurts the most was leaving the people you love. Mom and dad drifted apart for months. Then my brother became a mafia boss because of me."

"It was never your fault. Your parents came back stronger together, and Caden made that decision to protect everyone. So don’t blame yourself."

She smiled. "Why do you ask? Are you planning to die?"

It was supposed to be a joke, but her heart pounded, looking at how serious Elijah was.
