My Kitsune System-Chapter 17

The following day moved like a breeze. Dan had gone to classes and had no issues or problems. He couldn't wait to meet Ryan at training and get to learn more from him.

And finally, it was now time for football training, he could now finally get to meet Ryan as the whole team was around. He had also done his best to come early so as to not come late and have to be punished. The field was filled with the players and Coach Collins was there too.

After the usual warm up, the team was called together so that they could be assigned special drills to perform.

The team was split according to positions, with the attackers being on one side, the midfielders on the other, and then the defenders.

The goalkeepers usually had their own separate sessions and didn't really train with the whole team.

Dan had wanted to join the defenders. He rarely plays and mostly just joins the defenders to train as he doesn't even know his own position.

He took a walk to their own part of the field when he heard....

"Othniel" Coach Collins' voice called out to him. Dan stopped in his tracks to see the Coach wave him over. Dan jogged over to go and meet the coach.

"How are you?"

"I am good, sir"

"Ahh, good, good, good" Coach Collins spoke as he got closer to Dan and wrapped his hands around him.

The Coach then took Dan to the side far from the earshot of the other players.

"So, I loved how you played last training session. I never knew you had it in you."

Dan's face started to turn red.

"Oh, I did? It was nothing, sir" Dan said as he bowed his head, avoiding the Coach's gaze.

"I am sure that's what you. But I want more of that kind of play from you"

"Oh, okay sir," Dan said with his head still down

"So, I was thinking of changing your position and putting you in the midfield. I was impressed by your understanding of the game and control of the game"

Dan was now utterly speechless and just raised his head to stare at the coach.

"I know it's a bit sudden but I am sure that by the time I am done with you. You would be a great midfielder"

"So, what do you say?"

"Uhm.... I"

"Ahh, you don't have to worry or think too much about it. Just take your time and tell me what you think" The Coach said as he pulled Dan into his embrace, brought him back to join the remaining team.

"For now, I want you to be practicing with the midfielders. I'll be checking on your progress" the coach spoke before he then turned to look at Ryu.

"I want you to put him through and show him the ropes. More like be his mentor on the field"

And with those words the coach left and the training began.

Today's training was more intense than other days due to the fact that an inter-college tournament was coming up.

They had done a lot of push-ups and passing drills.

While all this was going on, Ryan was by the corner of the field observing them. He had no care in the world about what was going on or who it was happening to.

Dan then took an excuse from the drill to approach him. Dan sat beside him and just stared at him.

Ryan just sat still, looking across the field and not sparing the person who sat beside him any glance.

"So why aren't you joining the team to practice?" Dan decided to start a conversation.

"Because I don't feel like"

Dan turned to stare at him

"What do you mean by you don't feel like?" Dan asked as he raised his eyebrows.

Shouldn't we all be practicing together even if he's on the bench?

"Because it is stressful," Ryan said as he leaned back.

Stressful? Isn't that the whole point because it's sports? Dan thought with wide eyes.

As if reading his thoughts, Ryan then pointed towards his foot. As Dan looked at the foot being pointed at, he then noticed the foot was wrapped in a bandage.

"Oh, I see"

It's the usual bandage foot excuse to get out of training. Dan sighed.

"You should go back to practice before the coach sees you. As it is, you seem to be his new favorite person"

"Oh, I had forgotten about that" Dan said as he stood up and began leaving to the field.

"I would be here when you get back" Ryan spoke as Dan left back to join the team to train.

The training had taken a toll on all the players. As they were all now gasping for breath and were all sweaty. But finally, they were done with training, they had gathered together in the form of a semi-circle. With the Coach in the middle.

"As most of you know, we have a competition on our hands. We need to start the season with a clean record. I will tolerate no losses, just wins"

"I know some of you, this might be your first time in the inter-college competitions but fear not, if you are a member of this team that means you have the right and talent to be here. I want you all to practice hard and put in your best"

"Have I made myself clear?"

"Yes sir" all the players echoed in unison.

"Good, that will be all for now," the Coach said to end the training

As the players began to disperse, Dan decided to search for Ryan. But it seemed as though he had already left the field.

Dan rushed out of the field to check the parking lot to see if Ryan was there. As he was doing this, he had noticed some of the players seemed to be talking and gossiping about someone. Their eyes were heading toward his direction every once in a while.

With his heightened sense he should be able to pick up what they were saying, but he had a more pressing issue. And that was to look for Ryan.

But no matter where he turned or looked, he couldn't find anyone with shiny golden hair around.

It seems he has gone

"Are you looking for someone?" Voice called out to Dan.

"Yes, actually I am... Have you seen...." Dan started but stopped mid-way as he noticed the boy with the golden hair smiling.

"You thought I had gone, didn't you?" Ryan chuckled.

Dan said nothing but just walked over to him.

"I think we should take a walk, don't you think, or you have other pressing issues at hand?"

Dan didn't reply

"So, I'll take that as a, yes?"

He still got no reply from Dan.

"Okay, a yes, it is" Ryan said as he limped towards Dan.

The two then took a walk through the city but avoided over crowded places. Dan didn't care much. As what was on his mind was that he just needed answers.

Ryan dragged him till they had reached a park. Though not as quiet as the night before, the park still provided a semblance of peace. Ryan then sat and then tapped the space beside him.

As Dan took a seat, Ryan sighed.

"Now where do we start?" Ryan said as he turned to face Dan.

"So, you do know you are about to die though?"
