My Kitsune System-Chapter 18
Chapter 18 - 18
Hearing those words, Dan didn't seem to flinch one bit but just stared back at Ryan.
"Okay that isn't news I guess" Dan said.
"So, aren't you surprised by how I know or how I got to find out?"
"Being honest, I should be worried about how you know this thing... but then the past few days haven't been normal either. So, I don't think I should be surprised if you knew something like that"
"Huh, so that also means you won't be surprised if I told you what you are then?"
"To be honest, I wouldn't really. I would actually want to know. So, tell me what am I?"
"Well, we both know you aren't a demi-god"
"Okay, we have established that I guess"
"Yes, we have" Ryan smiled.
"You are what I'll say is a bridge between this world and the realm of the gods"
"To be precise, you are what we call a kitsune"
"And that should be the foxlike creature if I am to guess," Dan said as he thought back to his encounter with the little girl.
"So, is he saying I'll be able to turn into a beast?"
"Precisely" Ryan said.
Dan remained quiet, processing what he heard and how it made sense. From the claws, the tail, the ears, and heightened.
I could be kitsune, but how sure is he that he is a kitsune and not a werewolf? But then no beast bit me though so it can't be a werewolf. So, it's kitsune then?
Dan was going through the information he had gotten through and putting the pieces together.
But then why? Dan thought as he now turned to look at Ryan. Their gazes then met.
"To be honest, I am as confused as you are as to why you are one. Because beings like that are usually born that way. But you on the other hand, you are turning into one. Would you mind sharing?"
Dan acted as if he hadn't heard what he said. And instead asked his own question.
"So, isn't it reversible or something?"
"Reversible eh maybe it's possible but something of that magnitude will need to be done by the same god who did that to you"
"So, if I am not really a demi-god why must I join the god games then?"
"Because though you aren't a demi-god. You have been marked as a champion of God to participate in the God games"
"Marked? What do you mean by marked?"
"Beings who are to participate in the god games have a different kind of aura, different from other demi-gods"
Different aura?
"Yes, normally demi-gods have a normal aura. But then those chosen have a denser one?"
Dan thought back to when he first got spirit sight. He noticed Ryan had a thicker aura. The golden aura around him was dense.
"So, you are part of the God games then?"
"Yes, I am. But then that's by the way. From what I can tell you're not just any ordinary kitsune. But you have been handpicked by the goddess to be her Champion. Most kitsunes act as a bridge between this world and the realm of the spirit. They carry messages from this world to that of the spirit"
"So why can't I just do that?"
"The answer to that question I can't answer why, don't you just ask her yourself?" Ryan said.
How would I be able to meet her though? Let's leave that problem for the future.
"You said something about me dying?"
"I am sure you have noticed that when you use your abilities, you draw from your life essence?" Ryan said.
Dan didn't say anything to confirm his words.
"So, it's more like you are sacrificing your life force for power. Something that is not very common but happens on rare occasions"
"So that means I am not the only one who is dying then"
"I won't really say only one but as I have said it happens on rare occasions"
"So how do you do it then? How are you able to wield immense power and still not die?"
"Well, that is all thanks to my bloodline. Being a demi-god I am able to access the power of the divine with no backlash. I may run out of divine energy, but then my body doesn't start to die because of the immense strain put on it"
"While you on the other hand, for gaining such kind of power. There has to be something to be paid in return"
Dan withdrew his gaze from Ryan and just stared at the floor. The atmosphere was quiet between the two. Ryan just watched Dan as he tried to digest what had just been said to him.
"Is there a way out of not dying?" Dan spoke out of the blue, while he still stared at the floor.
"Your options are actually limited"
"The first would be not to use any divine abilities and just be normal. As in this way your life essence doesn't have to be deteriorating. But then there's a draw back though. You won't be able to protect yourself and could be easily killed"
"And what is the second option?"
"Well, that is a dark path though. Not something you should really consider"
"I would like to know all my options," with determination filling his eyes.
"Okay, this part seems to be the easiest but also the deadliest. You know all living things have life? From the littlest of bugs to the biggest of animals. They all have life essence," Ryan said and took a pause to observe Dan who was listening with rapt attention.
"You're running low on life essence, right? So why don't you draw from something else. I mean why don't you draw from someone else?"
"This would make you corrupted and hated by the gods, but then who cares, at least then you would survive, right? Oh, and I must tell you... you're not going to be the first to have done it" Ryan said as he cracked a smile at Dan.

Steal life essence? That's no different from killing a person, isn't it, Dan thought.
His face was now all filled with disgust. He tried to lean back and rest on the chair. Dan turned from side to side but no matter what he did he could never just feel comfortable on the seat.
He then got up; his gaze now fixed into the scenery before him. Dan then took a deep breath as he tried to calm his racing heart.
"Isn't there going to be a third option or something? Because the options you seem to give don't work in my favor"
Ryan then stood up.
"No matter how you look at it, the honest truth is your situation isn't good. Powers meant for gods in a human vessel. Ahh, your chances don't really seem good."
"But... there might be a way though" Ryan said
