My Kitsune System-Chapter 20: Task for the Goddess

Dan got home late after today's session. He was really tired. He got into his dorm too just lay down.

Ryan had been drilling him rigorously for a while now. And whenever his body is not in motion, he can feel his bones vibrating.

As he lay quietly in the room, his heightened senses had kicked up something. Though the room was dark. He could tell he wasn't all in the room. He could sense another person breathing in the room with him.

Immediately he switched his to spirit sight. And looked around the room. At the corner of the room was a being that was seated.

And I didn't even know I was not alone when I entered. If the person was an enemy now I would have been dead.

As Dan looked at the person, he noticed the person's core had a golden aura to it. It wasn't as thick as Ryan's but it was good to know that the person seated at that corner isn't human.

Dan reached for the light switch that wasn't too far from his bedside. As the light came on, so did the features of the person sitting in the corner of the room come to light. It was a lady who sat down there.

The lady's fair skin sparkled under the illumination of the room. She had a long hair. The lady looked so demure as she sat cross-legged across the room. Something about the lady felt so familiar, probably it was the subtle traces of disgust that were on her face.

"So how has your training been going?" she spoke.

"I don't know what you are talking about. And also who are you?"

"Are you intentionally trying not to recognize me?" The young lady asked.

"Am I meant to know you?"

"I thought you have had better and more heightened senses by now"

"Probably you prefer this version of me" she said as she stood up and started walking around. The space around her started to get distorted.

She began to shrink. Her face began growing much younger.

"So what about now?" her voice was now smaller.

Dan did recognize her. But his heart ached as he did.

At this point I do wish it was a burglar.

The little girl noticed the grim expression on Dan's face.

"Did you wish it was someone else?"

Dan was immediately snapped out of his thoughts.

"Oh no, no. I rarely get visitors actually" Dan said as he started noticing she seemed to start getting annoyed.

So Dan wanted to change the conversation and get out of a tight spot with her.

"So I noticed the around seems to be very thick. What's with that?" Dan said.

"I just broke through in my evolution... Wanna see?" she said as she started unleashing her aura.

Her pupils got slimmer and straight The air around the room started getting heavier.

Behind her, a tail flew across the air. Then it was followed by the second, the third, and the fourth. And in every tail that appeared, Dan could feel the breath being sucked out of his lungs.

His mind also was assaulted by waves and waves of migraines. And it was becoming very unbearable.

"You know you can stop showing off now though," Dan said with a very calm expression.

She didn't stop though but began unleashing her fifth tail.

At this point, Dan could feel his head about to be squashed down.

But then she stopped when she noticed he didn't flinch. She withdrew back her aura and tails.

"The goddess has a task for you"

What does she mean the goddess has a task for me? I have barely gotten over the last mess the goddess had done to my life and now this...

"And why should I accept?" Dan asked as he raised his eyebrows.

"Do you think you have a choice?"

"Sure why not?"

Immediately the expression on her face changed as she heard. A smile was now on her face.

"Yes you do have a choice," she said.... "but then I would love to know what choice you make" she started approaching Dan to see the choice he makes.

As Dan saw the smile he began to feel a icy chill run up his spine.

And that was when he noticed it....

It wasn't a feeling....

But then her hands had now turned white. And they also looked frosty.

So that's what is causing the temperature to drop drastically. She has elemental powers.

She would love to beat me into submission if I tried to prove stubborn.

"So what would the goddess have me do?"

"Now that's more like it."

"I'm pretty sure with all your training, you should know what you are right now?"

She waited for a reply from Dan who then just gave her a kind of nod.

"So as a messenger of the goddess. You are to carry out tasks for her"

You mean as an errand boy. Dan thought to himself as he smiled.

"And of what benefit is doing the task?"

"Let's see for starters you get to keep your life and also you get gifts by completing tasks for her"

the last gift I got, still haunts me. What will the next one do?

"What does the task entail?" he asked

She didn't reply to him but just stared at him with so much intent.

I hope she can't read minds.

"Though the gods have left the realm of the living... That doesn't mean that they have completely deserted humanity" she broke the silence.

"The gods still listen and answer to the prayers of their devoted followers... and now the goddess wants you to answer the prayers of her followers. So do you accept?"

And before he could reply. The system sent him a notification.

Failure to accept the task would anger the goddess and would reduce the host's favor with the gods.
