Chapter 21 - Dark fumes

"So, what service does the goddess need me for?" Dan asked.

"As her messenger you are to carry out tasks for her. Some of her devotees have prayed to her and they need her help. You as her messenger are to answer their prayers and make sure they still keep believing"

"And how am I to grant their heart desires... Last time I checked I am not a fairy. Or do you see wings though" he said as he turned his back towards her.

"You don't have to worry about not being able to grant wishes... The goddess has blessed you with a gift.... Use it"

Use it? Or do you mean die?

"You can stare daggers all you want but I think time is of the essence" With those words she dropped a picture of a house with an address at the back.

With that, she was ready to go when Dan spoke.

"Oh, I just remembered I never got to ask your name?"

"Yuki," she said as she rolled her eyes and then vanished.

Dan picked up the picture to look at it. It was one of an old-looking building. It looked too shabby to be inhabited.

Seems we have somewhere to be tomorrow after classes.

He then picked up his phone. And scrolled to his messages. He had none actually.

He went to a particular chat. Its profile picture was that of a cat. Entering the dm he decided to type a message.

>Hey so would not be around for training tomorrow. Something came up and I have to handle it...

Dan then sent the message. Immediately the person came online and viewed the message. The person started typing to reply...

But then the person stopped and went offline...

"Typical...." Dan muttered.

"Seems I have a packed day tomorrow," he said as decided to get some shut-eye.

When Dan was done with classes the next day. Dan started heading towards the address.

He journeyed to the part of the city that he never really went to. It looked like the slums.

The houses have seen better days. Most of them were a storm away from being blown away.

The paintings of the buildings were also falling off. And this made locating the building he was looking for quite hard, as they all looked alike and the house numbers were gone.

As he stood there trying to find which building it was, Dan got quite puzzled.

"Hello" a tiny voice spoke from behind Dan as he seemed to be blocking the path.

He turned to look at who spoke. And there stood before him a young lady.

She looked very young. Her skin looked very fair and soft. She wore a school uniform. On her back was a bag pack.

On her hands, she held some bags. In them seems to be groceries as he could see the vegetables sticking out.

Wait what if she's Yuki in disguise?

Dan then activated his spirit sight. As he looked at her core it was just pure white. With no trace of gold or any other color.

I guess she's a mortal

"Sorry, but that's quite weird the way you're staring..." With those words, she broke Dan's train of thought.

As Dan came back it was at that point, that he realized he had been staring.

Her face now flushed red. And with that, she bowed her head. It was then Dan realized the core was located just a bit below the chest region.

And he had been staring....

So, she must think....

"Oh no"

"It's not what you think" Dan tried to explain.

Seeing that it was of no use...

"I am sorry" he said.

"It's fine" she said as she rushed away.

Dan watched her leave.

"She will never look at me the same now... good thing is I will never get to meet her again" Dan muttered.

Dan took up the photo to look at the address again. Trying to see if he could figure the whole thing out. When he found out he couldn't he decided to ask around to get directions.

Dan met an elderly man who then directed him towards the building and apartment he was looking for.

As Dan opened the door into the building, the hinges of the door made a creaking sound. The sound was loud enough that it echoed though the halls of the apartment.

It just had to announce my arrival. Dan thought as he got in.

When Dan got in, he didn't know where it was coming from but then he could smell the moist in the air.

"Something seems to be leaking somewhere"

Splash!!!

He had stepped into a puddle. At least he had not gotten himself all wet. The puddle was actually a small one.

Stepping aside from the puddle. Dan started going up the stairs to his destination. With every step he took, the stairs made a creaking sound.

The higher he got the more unstable the stairs were.

By the time he was almost at the apartment, an eerie feeling began enveloping him. He couldn't tell what it was but the feeling tried to strangle his heart.

The higher he got the thicker feeling and heavier the air around him became.

What's this feeling? I don't think I should be here. Dan thought as he took another step up the stairs.

As he got higher up the stairs, the more the hair on his body rose. His instincts telling him to run away. At a point, he felt the air was too thick for him to even breathe.

And then finally he had reached the door of the apartment. It was from this door the eerie feeling was coming from.

Dan activated his spirit sight.

As he did, he could see dark fumes reeking out of the door gaps.

I don't know what being is in there but whatever it is...it should be quite powerful.

Dan then decided to check his stats.

Name: Dan Othniel

Title: The Goddess Chosen

Level 3: 30/50

Tail Level: 1/9

He then checked his attributes to see how his rigorous training with Ryan had paid off.

[Attributes]

- Strength: 41

- Speed: 38

- Agility: 44

- Intelligence: 19

- Spirit: 23

As Dan looked at the stat a sort of confidence washed over him. I should be able to do this.

The last resort would be to use my powers only if the being is too strong will I use the ninefold claw.

He stepped in front of the door. His hands tapped lightly on the door.

And he got no response.

Dan brought his hands again and tapped on the door. This time a little harder than the last time.

He heard movements from within the room. And then light footsteps could be heard as it approached the door.

"Yes" he heard a soft voice answer from within.

He could see the door handle twist slowly and the door opened up.

The dark fumes as if released, crashed into him.

His fist tightened, his eyes sharp waiting for the littlest of movement. Dan watched as the door gradually opened up.
