"That was definitely far too many wolves... and they all were just waiting for us beneath the ash too, which means there is a high probability of there being even more monsters waiting for us the rest of the way... That is most certainly not a comforting thought, now is it?"

Anput voiced our concerns with a grin on her face as she sifted through the hundreds of corpses, searching for the ones that were the most intact and looking for anything of note that she might want to harvest; the only thing that Lilith had told us was that there was a chance we could be in here for ’quite a long time’, and when further questioned about that she elaborated that she meant we could be here for many months.

No longer than a year though, and that was certainly something that was relieving to hear after we all were worrying that she might have us in here for way, way too long, and although multiple months was definitely still quite long, it was within expectations and somewhat acceptable... even if I didn’t want to think of being here for that long.

"It isn’t that comforting, no, but at the same time... can’t say I’m against these kind of interruptions in our march since it helps keep the blood flowing~! Kinda want to stop using the incense and just see what happens, y’know?"

Lady Fenyras grinned at us all, the Demon Wolf’s silver eye flashing dangerously while her sharp fangs glittered beneath the sun, contrasting her grey skin that matched the ash all around us; her gear was caked with blood and flesh from the various wolves, and yet she seemed unbothered by it, not rushing over to me to get cleaned nor caring at all that she reeked of death.

"Well, it’s a good thing we have a surplus of that herb, and if it comes down to it I can use my magic to help grow some more. That’ll just take time and a commitment to staying in a single area, which... well, as you saw, it isn’t exactly something that I would want to do."

Lilith, who had been here for many years already at this point, was even suggesting that stopping the burning of that herb was a terrible idea, which made me ask her "How did you manage to survive in here for so long without it then?"

"Being but a single person capable of masking and controlling my magic to such a degree made it hard for the monsters to hunt me down even if they wanted to. They didn’t know I was even here most days, and when they found me I just picked off the most dangerous ones before relocating myself to somewhere new, somewhere ’safe’."

"YOU had to run?"

The Demoness raised a brow and stared at the Demon Wolf for a moment before she said "Yes, even I had to run from the monsters ever once in a while, Fenyras. You have witnessed a small horde of monsters once, with a competent group of tested warriors. If there wasn’t the risk of losing you forever within the Labyrinthian I would go ahead and tell you to go and see for yourself..."

She just clicked her tongue at that and returned to watching Anput roam around the field of corpses, clearly interested in what the Jackalkin was doing but not wanting to say anything to her; meanwhile we were all gathered around the carriage going over all the available space inside as we took stock of what we had.

Already we were gathering some more resources for us to use later down the line, like the tiger pelt, all those potent amethysts, the chunks of the more unique geode that had been stuck inside of the ape’s chest, a bunch of bones... and now we were gathering a bunch of different wolf pelts that had different uses.

Fire resistant fur, metallic fur, thicker and fluffier fur... all kinds of fur was laying on the ground around us with all kinds of uses, and that wasn’t even taking into account all the different kinds of bones and other materials that existed within the wolves like their glands and organs.

"If we stop each time we encounter a horde to harvest them we truly will be here for well over half a year. We need to start being picky about what we take and what we leave behind."

That was the same thought that I was having as I watched my mate wander around hoisting up random wolves to pull back to the carriage, dropping them off in front of Leone and I so that we could dismantle them and harvest the usable parts.

Mom was watching from beside the carriage, taking whatever we handed her and packing it into the carriage as best she could with the space we had available, and even with Jahi helping we were quickly running out of space.

Even after I double checked their work I noticed that they were actually doing a really good job and we were already getting quite close to maxing out our available space with just this, so the next time Anput came over with another corpse we stopped her and showed her that she needed to be far more picky with what she wanted.

The sun continued to shine down on us as we took this moment after the battle to rest, but soon enough we were back to the march as we continued our journey towards the center of the Labyrinthian, leaving behind the ashy plains far quicker than I had expected.

At first I was excited since my nose was no longer being clogged with the cloying stench of ash, but that excitement was quickly dashed away as we entered a red and orange wasteland that was covered in gigantic lava lakes and deceptively fast moving lava lakes that would randomly overflow from their banks to creep close to anything unlucky enough to be nearby.
