Chapter 30 - My lord, we are waiting for you

Alan stood before a large building, and a large crowd gathered outside. The building had glass walls and a tall, curved roof that resembled the wings of a bird or a leaf. In front of it, there was a striking sign featuring the ZIZ bird. This was the Awakener Hall, where a person's fate would either be decided or destroyed.

Alan had already made up his mind to take the Awakener's exam after completing the Forest of Death. There were two reasons for his decision.

First, he couldn't rely solely on the system—there were certain things he had to do on his own. This was the only way he could fight the Dreadminds or enter rifts. He couldn't fight in the rift if he remained a Delver instead of an Awakener.

The other reason was that yesterday, the system had given him a main task: find the devil hiding in the Awakener's Hall.

Devils were evolved versions of Dreadminds or Reavers. There were two types of monsters in rifts: Dreadminds and Reavers. They evolved into devils when exposed to a massive amount of resonance, or when two rifts fused. The monsters inside these fused rifts would gain immense power, forcing them to evolve. Devils could also arise when Dreadminds or Reavers fused on their own.

"This is a very serious matter," Alan thought. "If a devil is hiding in the Awakener Hall and no one can find it, it must be very smart and confident in its disguise or power. At the very least, it should be a peak Saint, and who knows how much damage it has already done to the Hall or to the Awakeners."

He paused, then continued in his mind, "Well, no use thinking about it now. First, I need to get my license and do my best to find and kill it."

The large crowd entered the Hall, everyone talking nervously. Some were excited about getting their license, while others silently observed the scene before them.

After a long wait, Alan walked toward the two receptionists to get his exam badge.

"Hello, sir, what's your name?" a short woman with long black hair asked, writing something down on a piece of paper.

"It's Alan, Miss Lena."

Lena paused for a second, stopped what she was doing, and looked up at him.

"Are you trying again this time, Alan?" she asked.

"Yes."

"I told you, you're doing a good job as a Delver."

"Don't worry, Miss Lena. I will awaken this time," Alan replied.

She sighed. She knew how stubborn he was. This was his fifth time trying, and she had never seen him disappointed. That was why she had forced him to become a Rift Delver.

"Okay, if that's what you want, who am I to stop you?" Lena said. "Lily, give him the badge."

The other receptionist, who was slightly taller and younger, nodded. "Yes, ma'am."

Lily went to the other desk, holding a badge with the same sign that Alan had seen when looking at the Awakener Hall—the ZIZ bird.

Alan took the badge and looked at the number on it. It was 69.

Lena told him to go to the central room where all the participants had gathered.

When he arrived at the center, he noticed most of the participants were younger than him. This was because 18 was the ideal age to awaken; it was when people began familiarizing themselves with resonance. Anyone could awaken up until the age of 40, but their core would be weaker, and they would always be average among Awakeners.

But that wasn't the case for Alan. He had already formed his core and reached the Luminous rank, surpassing all his peers.

Alan stood silently in a corner, waiting for the examiner to arrive while observing the participants. A few piqued his interest. One was a bald man in a yellow bodysuit trying to kill a mosquito. Another was a handsome man with long hair claiming he was the strongest. And the last was a man with golden spiky hair, daring anyone to fight him.

"Silence," a loud voice echoed throughout the room. It was a voice filled with authority, and three people entered the room.

Everyone stopped talking and stood silently, respecting the person.

The man who spoke stood in the middle of the room, while the other two stood by the door.

"Looks like we have quite a talented group this time," he said.

"I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Adam, and I'm in charge of this year's exam."

Adam Carter—rising talent of the Hall, good at everything: looks, talent, money. He had it all. The second son of the Carter Clan had left his family and joined the Hall, though no one knew why the greatest talent of the clan had chosen to join an organization they hated.

"Now listen carefully. I will explain the exam. If anyone has any questions, you can ask after I finish explaining."

"The exam is divided into three parts. One by one, you will enter a room where the two guides will take you according to your number on the badge."

"The first round of the exam is to touch the Sacred Awakener Pillar. This will tell us if you have the ability to awaken or not."

"In the second round, you will fight a Dreadmind. Don't worry, you won't die—it's just to give you an idea of what you'll face on this path. I will mark you based on your performance."

"The third round is different from last year. You will have to answer questions posed by the three judges of the Human Awakener Association."

Everyone's face filled with confusion. Why were the three judges suddenly involved in the exam?

Alan had the same question. The three judges were only second to the president. They were the pillars of the association. If they were involved, something unusual must be happening inside the Hall.

"Is it because of the devil?" Alan thought.

"Now, if you don't have any questions, we'll start the exam right away," Adam said.

One by one, the participants went with the guides, and the remaining ones watched a large screen in front of them.

"Tch! I thought someone from outside the clans would surprise me this time, but I was wrong," Adam muttered, watching the participants leave the room.

"Number 53."

"The genius of the Larkin Clan," someone whispered.

"Not only is she a genius, but she's so beautiful."

"She looks like a goddess."

"I'm blessed to breathe the same air as her."

It was a girl, slightly shorter than Alan, her demeanor aloof as if she didn't care about anyone around her or the events unfolding.

She entered the pillar room, touched the pillar, and it suddenly glowed with a purple shade.

"Congratulations, Miss Alia, for becoming an Awakener," the guide said.

Alia ignored the guide and left the room.

Everyone in the center room cheered for her, but Alan noticed a boy in the corner, looking at her with a sad expression. He felt like he had seen the boy somewhere before but couldn't quite remember where.

After 20 minutes, it was finally Alan's turn.

"Hmm! This boy isn't nervous at all. He's completely relaxed, as though he knows he's going to awaken," Adam pondered.

Alan touched the Awakener Pillar, and suddenly, green, red, purple, orange, white, and gold energies swirled around him.

Alan was confused. This had never happened before. Normally, the pillar would glow, and you would see your affinity with resonance.

He looked at the guides, but they were both staring wide-eyed, not blinking. In the next moment, all the energies merged, and a glowing figure appeared—no larger than a child's hand. It flew toward Alan and gave a soft peck on his forehead.

"My Lord, we are waiting for you."
