Chapter 48 - Raging Disappointment

Another battle against his brother that ended in disappointment. He'd won and yet instead of pride, Wolf felt a great sense of shame as if it was him who'd cheated and not his brother. Looking up into Astoria's eyes, he was made to wonder. Was he worthy of such a woman? With her son having axed his own foot by cheating, he'd grown uncertain by the lack of a true fight, a true challenge.

'Nobody's gonna accept me anyways, not after how this mess ended...' Already an outcast, being pushed into the king's position by the incompetence of his brother, that would become the narrative. And even now as he looked to the public, some cheered his name while others hurled insults.

William's fanatics had deluded themselves so much; they were defending him by claiming the throne to be bestowed to the late king's blood.

"A COMMONER SHOULDN'T BE KING!" Screamed a man and many followed.

"HOW DO WE KNOW HE DIDN'T CHEAT EITHER?!" Hurling whatever they could find at Wolf, the public already displayed their dissent.

"THIS WHOLE FUCKING THING IS RIGGED, I KNEW THE QUEEN FAVORED THAT RASCAL!" Questioning even the queen, the people began to rush out of the Coliseum.

Wolf had won fairly and yet he was made to feel as if he'd been defeated thoroughly. Despite the scorn and mockery of the people, he turned to the queen for the opinion of such easily swayed people mattered, none.

Looking right back at him, Astoria heaved heavily before putting her sceptre to rest. As it hit the ground, a stomping sound rippled through the arena, silencing all. Raising the staff up high again, she finally announced.

"The new king is Wolf De' Didact!" Taking a brief pause, the queen added in a whisper. "And I shall be his queen."

Dissent erupted in the crowd once more and as the statues of angels disappeared into a burning glow, the people of Aestonia burst into a scuffle. Those who supported the new king and those who didn't, getting at each other's throats, shouting and pushing each other, both groups grew violent.

"As if we'll accept a bastard as a king!"

"He won fair and square! The goddess's angels witnessed it!"

Such arguments grew plenty and the scruffle continued. Rushing amidst the crowd came the local guards, however, with only a spear and shield in their hands, they were outnumbered and overpowered by both sides. As it all happened, Astoria's weary sight blurred into a dreamy vision. Having no control over the matter, she honed in on the image and tried to decipher this alarm from the future.

And in that image, she saw William charging at Wolf with a dark blade gripped in his hand. Driving it into the new king's heart, he spewed immense mana into the wound–making the barbarian's body implode upon itself.

"hAA!" Escaping the dream with a gasp, she quickly turned to look at her son rising from the ground. On wobbling legs he stood, his eyes focused on Wolf's back. As for the king, the weight of everything that had happened was masking his senses, leaving Astoria to decide what needed to be done as William charged towards him.

'Why did you have to do this?!' Gritting her teeth in horror of what she was about to do, she directed her wand forward and right as the blade would've pierced through Wolf, a glowing astral hand, twice as large as William, slammed him into the ground. Hitting the floor like a cockroach under a shoe, the prince lay lifeless in a crater shaped like a hand.

As the dust settled once more, the crowd grew even more rowdy. Astoria's worry had also taken to her face, and Wolf was left shocked at what had happened. What should've been a celebrated moment had turned into a nightmare. And with William's attempt at the king's life, the prince was rushed by the royal guards.

Grabbing his barely breathing frame, they cast their gaze on the queen. Being given a sway of her hand, they knew what had to do with the prince. Taking his master along with him, the guards took them to the dungeons, and this time unlike the last, they would be put under constant supervision.

"The event is over, go home..." With Astoria's parting words, the crowd scattered and the participants and their supporters were left to digest what had happened.

From Runner to Kukei, even Kanna, and the new king, were all struck with disappointment after everything that they'd been through during the event. Almost dying at the hands of a beastman and for what? To watch the final fight be such a nightmare? The young blood scoffed at the whole thing, feeling as though he was somehow scammed.

Kanna felt the same, and Kukei had an entirely new set of worries to go through. The will of her people that was placed on her shoulders, with William still alive, she had but one option. However, keeping her lips sealed, the reptilian lay on her bed having decided to rest for a few days before attempting anything else.

"You won," as Wolf walked by Renee, the faunan grabbed his hand and began walking alongside him. Holding it firm, she stared at him sideways. "So what if he cheated? You're gonna be king either way."

"He took the satisfaction out of winning, is that it?" Sola questioned him more precisely.

Shrugging his shoulders, however, Wolf decided not to say anything. Even shaking their hands away, he made them leave him alone inside of his room for a few moments. And while he sat in silence trying to move past this strange sense of defeat, it finally began to settle that he truly had become the new king.

'Doesn't matter how I feel anymore. It's done.' No use moping around, he kept trying to pump himself up and yet something about the whole situation was keeping him down.

"Fucking hell, I need a drink..." Shaking his head, he stormed out of his room. Renee and Sola were both surprised by his sudden exit, but before they even had a chance to worry, Wolf revealed his plans to them. "We're getting everyone, and we're fucking drinking together tonight!"

And that's exactly what he planned to do. Eat, drink, and talk to everyone who'd taken part in the competition. Perhaps even know them better and what they had planned now that the event was over and a new king shall take seat soon enough.
