Nightmare Assault-Chapter 488: Morgue

The old man glanced at the elevator before moving his eyes awkwardly away. He told Jiang Cheng, “Don’t stand here. Let’s go somewhere else.”

“Okay.” Jiang Cheng nodded.

The old man intended to invite Jiang Cheng into his sickroom, but reconsidered and changed his mind. Even if he did ask him, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t go.

In the end, the group found a quiet spot in the lobby. They stayed close to the window. The elder flipped the ashes away from the tip of the cigarette. It was not his first time sneaking a smoke there. The old man coughed occasionally. His throat didn’t sound good.

“Don’t use the elevator anymore.” The old man whispered, “Especially that particular one. It’s okay in the morning, but definitely not at night!”

Jiang Cheng acted confused. He glanced at the elevator, then at the elderly man. He asked, “Why not? Isn’t the elevator to be used?”

The old man licked his lips. “How long have you been here?”

“Not too long,” Jiang Cheng answered vaguely.

“How many times have you seen people use that elevator?”

“Erm…” Jiang Cheng scratched his head. “I haven’t been paying attention, but I don’t think anyone did.”

“It’s not that. No one will use that elevator!” The old man swallowed nervously. “People will only use that elevator for one thing.”

“What thing?”

“To deliver the dead.” The old man regarded Jiang Cheng strangely. “Haven’t you discovered that the elevator is different from the other elevators? That elevator is clearly longer than normal. It’s to ease the transport of cadavers.”

Jiang Cheng interrupted, “I know that, but isn’t that to accommodate trolleys? It’s the same for all hospitals. After all, patients with serious cases have to be transported as such.” Jiang Cheng meant to say that the old man had overreacted.

The old man became anxious. “Kid, you’re not from around here, right? Everyone here knows that if you have a serious illness, you never come to this hospital. There is another hospital nearby. It’s not as big as this place, but the conditions are much better.

“Kid, I think you’re a good guy. Listen to me. If you have nothing urgent, leave this place.”

Wang Changguo looked incredulous when he heard the old man say Jiang Cheng was a good guy. However, he quickly adjusted his expression so Jiang Cheng wouldn’t notice.

“Sir.” Jiang Cheng looked curious. “Did something happen here?”

The old man had finished the cigarette. Jiang Cheng offered him another one. The old man looked conflicted as he viewed the cigarette. Ultimately, he rejected Jiang Cheng. “My friends are waiting for me to go back. Kid, you should remember what I said…”

The lighter clicked. Jiang Cheng lit up the cigarette. He looked at the old man dumbly. “Well…”

The old man stared at the cigarette. He froze.

“I don’t smoke. So…” Jiang Cheng made to throw the cigarette out the window. At that moment, the old man called after him with a wince. “It was the doctor who told me to stop smoking.” The old man leaned on the window and took another big swig. “He said it was not good for my health.”

“Don’t listen to me. I’m a doctor.” Jiang Cheng countered, “If you don’t drink and smoke, what’s the point of living?”

“Hah.” The old man said, “You’re quite an interesting kid.” Wang Changguo cleverly didn’t say anything.

“Sir.” Jiang Cheng hesitated, “About the elevator…”

The old man sighed. He didn’t look that interested in the cigarette anymore. “An incident once happened in that elevator.”

Jiang Cheng reacted and realised the old man was referring to the female nurse in Room 906. He didn’t think the old man would know something from so long ago. However, after some exchanges, Jiang Cheng realised they were talking about different things.

The incident the old man mentioned occurred much closer. It was two months ago.

“At this hospital, only this elevator leads to the morgue.” The old man lowered his voice. “This is the only path.”

“I remember this hospital has stairs on both sides,” Jiang Cheng countered.

The old man shook his head. He looked around mysteriously before whispering, “You can’t use those. The stairwells are sealed.”

“Sealed?” 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

“Yes.” The old man revealed, “I discovered it by accident.” The morgue was underground. Sealing both stairs to the basement was weird. Did something happen in the morgue?

Seeing Jiang Cheng’s confusion, the old man swallowed before continuing, “Kid, you might not believe this, but I swear that I’m telling the truth.

“Someone… has walked out of the morgue.”

“Someone?” Wang Changguo’s scalp numbed. He was scared. If this were a human, the old man wouldn’t act like this. So he had to be talking about a dead body… Or a ghost.

“What do you mean?” Jiang Cheng pressed, “Sir, what do you mean by someone walking out of the morgue?”

“How can you not get it?” The old man was agitated. “Do you not know what is normally inside a morgue?”

“Do you mean… A dead body has gone missing?”

“It didn’t go missing. The body… walked out on its own!” The old man said hurriedly. “When the person was delivered here, they were already dead. The body was pushed towards the morgue after the paper was done. Guess what happened? When they went to check the day after, the corpse was gone!

“They suspected someone had stolen the body. It raised quite a fuss. However, the hospital found nothing from its investigation. Then, a new staff member suggested they check the surveillance video!

“At first, everyone ignored him because the cameras were only installed on the first-floor lobby. No matter how dumb the culprit is, they wouldn’t leave via the lobby. Also, it was a body. They couldn’t stuff it inside a bag.

“But… then…” The old man’s face paled as he paused.
