Even though the old man said that the staircases were sealed off, Jiang Cheng still went to check. As the elder claimed, they could walk down the steps, but at the end of it was a metallic door. The door looked sturdy with a massive U-shaped lock. The lock was bound with layers of chains. It felt like they didn’t mean to open this door ever again.

The travellers didn’t look good. This didn’t look like a typical lock. Someone was worried that something inside might come out. Therefore, the old man was probably not lying.

Cao Yang didn’t give up. He wanted to check the other staircase. Jiang Cheng could understand his feelings. After all, taking the elevator was a nightmare for them. The elevator ferried them to this world.

“That won’t be necessary,” Jiang Cheng stopped him. Since the right staircase was sealed, the left one had to be too. There was no point in just sealing off one side.

Jiang Cheng didn’t want to waste time. He came to the elevator. Soon, the elevator that the old man claimed was used to transport bodies arrived. It looked just like before. It was clean and neat. The light was soft and gentle. Everything looked normal. However, for the travellers, the elevator was like a coffin.

If they were trapped inside such a small space, there was no way to run. Plus… Yu Yu’s face paled. She was reminded of Du Feng. Du Feng died in this elevator. When she saw the body, her brain buzzed. Du Feng’s arms were in front of his stomach… cradling his head.

His open eyes kept bleeding. It was harrowing.

A hand landed on her shoulder, causing her to shiver. She looked up and met Jiang Cheng’s eyes. “I’m fine.” Yu Yu was flustered. “I was just… distracted.”

Jiang Cheng nodded wordlessly. They entered the elevator and watched the doors slowly close. The people outside looked at them as if once the doors closed, they would never see the three of them again.

The claustrophobic space unsettled Cao Yang. The elevator was old, and the parts were aged. The wires made horrible noises. It sounded like the booth could fall at any moment. Cao Yang consoled himself with the idea that even if it fell, they would be fine. After all, the hospital only had one underground floor.

The elevator reached the underground first floor safely. When the elevator opened, the three were squeezed at the back. Despite his muscles, Cao Yang was the most nervous. Yu Yu adapted swiftly. Jiang Cheng was worried about her, but she was the first to look out the door.

“Nothing… is around,” She whispered. The space was larger than they anticipated. It was orderly and clean. There was a long corridor. Other than the benches lining the walls, there was no additional decoration. The doors were white and light blue. The lights were not bright, but they could see just fine. The atmosphere was severe.

The elevator opened to a wall. After taking a turn, one could see several rooms. The rooms had no labels, but they were numbered. They didn’t look like the morgue, so the three didn’t mean to examine them. They didn’t want to stay there for too long.

They walked down the corridor. The morgue was rather inside. A small iron plate hung on the door. It said clearly that this was the morgue.

Perhaps it was mental influence. When Yu Yu saw the term, her heart raced. Even the blood in her veins froze.

Jiang Cheng walked in front, Yu Yu in the middle, and Cao Yang at the back. Yu Yu was quite touched that the men took care of her. However, it was not the time to be appreciative. She looked around to collect information. She’d warn them if she spotted any danger. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

With every few steps he took, Jiang Cheng would look up. This action made the other two nervous. Jiang Cheng listened to the sounds and their footsteps. Their footsteps made exceptionally clear echoes. With his experience, he suspected the ghost would appear behind him. However, Jiang Cheng didn’t share his suspicion, afraid that his teammates wouldn’t stand it.

The deeper they went, the lower the temperature. Standing at the door, Jiang Cheng held the big handle and pressed down. The door gradually opened.

It wasn’t locked?!

It was surprising but somehow expected. After all, no horror story would end with a locked door. How was the script supposed to proceed? Was the author going to end on a cliffhanger?

With a heavy and long screech, the door to the morgue swung wide open. They were hit by a chilling wind that carried a strange smell.

Cao Yang frowned.

The place was dark. Everyone held their breath. There was no sound.

Yu Yu relaxed. She thought to herself, “That’s right. This is the morgue. Things will be bad if we can hear something.” However, she quickly eliminated that thought, afraid that it might come true.

They couldn’t find the light switch, so they had to rely on the flashlights on their phones. The rays chased away the dark, and the morgue was revealed to them. The place was larger than they expected. There were around seven mortuary beds by the wall. There was a tipped-over cart. The metallic handle reflected a silvery glow.

On the inside wall were the rows of mortuary cabinets. The cabinets were embedded in the wall. Each cabinet had its own number. The doors had tags bearing the dead’s names and dates of death.

Jiang Cheng went closer to the cabinets. Yu Yu became his lookout.

Jiang Cheng and Cao Yang used their phones to look for the name, Zhang Zhaowei.
