Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 521: Eternal Darkness ()
"We were too late to realise what she had done, Xenon was far beyond reasoning. Dark magic clouded our bond, I could not even reach into his mind... none of us could." King Jian recalled painfully.
"I do not know if you understand, what it means to a dragon to have his mind controlled by another...to defy his life sworn oath against his will, to betray his own kind..."
"I do not know if you understand why a dragon would willingly choose to be cuffed and consider the one thing we loathe the most a better fate..." King Jian trailed off.
Neveah’s heart dropped at King Jian’s words, the dragon king was never so expressive, never so emotional about anything or anyone.
Yet as he spoke of Xenon and what Misha had put him through, Neveah saw a side of King Jian that she had never seen,
She saw the pain and regret in his tone, the potency of his hatred for Misha, and the purity and absoluteness of his love for his brothers.
It made sense to Neveah, why King Jian would loathe her for showing a semblance to Misha in any form...it was just how much he wanted to protect Xenon from making the same mistake twice.
Xenon’s mistake had not broken him alone, all six brothers had been affected by it...but none as much as King Jian himself.
"What happened? Did he..." Neveah was not sure what exactly she wanted to ask, or if she wanted King Jian to continue. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
To hear the pain in his tone and imagine what he had gone through faced with Xenon’s betrayal, Neveah felt a strong, overwhelming urge to comfort him...to take away those dark memories she knew would always haunt him.
"Xenon has remained undisputed as the most powerful battle dragon in the stronghold. In battle...not even I am his match. Misha knew that too." King Jian murmured.
"She also knew that a challenge to the death could not be refused. A King is duty bound to protect his integrity at any moment it is threatened, this is the only way hierarchy is maintained." King Jian said, passing a look to Neveah.
Neveah understood this, it was the same in a wolf pack. If the Alpha was challenged and failed to accept it, his strength would be in question for the rest of his rule...many more would attempt to overthrow him.
The only response to a challenge for the throne was death, this was just the way it went.
"It was the first time since my father’s passing that I knew what it meant to dread... to lose was death, winning would mean Xenon’s death...killing my brother with my own hands, as if once was not enough." King Jian murmured, his brows twitching slightly, the only sign that those words came from a scarred heart.
"For whatever the result of the battle, I would not forgive myself... for failing to protect Xenon from her." King Jian murmured.
"I should have killed her when I had the chance, even if it meant Xenon would hate me for life." King Jian said in regret.
"At the height of our battle, I realised there was only one result. I could not bring myself to harm Xenon, I was brutally injured... I accepted that day would be my end."
"That Jian of Golden Scales and the entire king’s guard would be destroyed by a mere witch...we who had conquered territories innumerable, feared by all, it was a great irony."
"But Misha underestimated the strength of the bond we brothers share... underestimated Xenon’s loyalty."
"Even I did...even I failed to remember that Xenon would battle through the fiery depths of hell for me. That my brother would never truly betray me..." King Jian paused again, his eyes going closed.
Neveah had never understood why they never spoke of Misha in all of dragon keep, none of the dragon lords even mentioned a word of her name, even Menarx would not speak of her.
Had it not been for Lord Skiren from the Everburn cave, Neveah would not have even known that Misha was a witch and was Xenon’s true bonded.
"Xenon...he choose death, rather than hurting me, he choose death. Xenon bounded his wings during flight... just when his claws could have ended it all."
"Right before my eyes, he cut off his flight mid air and went plunging down to the earth far below... a fall no one could have survived, and Misha rode him on that day..." King Jian released a shaky breath.
Neveah’s eyes widened at King Jian’s words.
"He took her down with him... intentionally." Neveah whispered.
"He was going to die with her... the woman he loved more than anything, he chose my life over hers and his own as well, a turn of event Misha could not have predicted."
"I tried to save him...but I was too late."
"The crash was... terrible. Misha... There was no way she could have survived it, she died on impact." King Jian said.
Neveah winced visibly, not because she sympathized with Misha’s fate...but because she knew what that meant for Xenon.
"Xenon himself was badly injured, he was in a coma for months, but he lived... it was only that, Xenon never remained the same after that." King Jian murmured.
"But it wasn’t his fault...he only did what he had to do..." Neveah whispered, she tilted her head back to blink away the tears that had gathered in her eyes.
It was only now she fully understood what Xenon had gone through, why Misha remained a thorn in his heart...an unsorted knot.
"Horrible as Misha was, she was his bonded... his wife, and Xenon had ended her life himself, no reason...no justification could ease his pain."
"The residues of her dark spell remained with him, without a master, fueled by his pain and grief, it became the darkness in Xenon’s mind... the wild haze." King Jian said.
"They had sworn before me that their love would be eternal... the joy in his eyes when he took his vows,"
"When he swore his world to her... he could never have thought it would end as such... that in fulfilling his duty, he restored the light to the stronghold, yet his own world descended into eternal darkness... " King Jian muttered in melancholy.
