Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 520: Her Goal ()
"But..." King Jian asked, already knowing Neveah had more to say.
"But I...Xenon... I have done Xenon a great wrong. And I do not know how to face that...face him." Neveah murmured in a heavy tone.
King Jian was quiet for a while, and Neveah winced visibly. She knew this situation was complicated for her, but it was no different for King Jian also.
Xenon was his brother and she, his true bonded to whom he had a rightful claim.
"Face him? Or face the feelings you have for him?" King Jian asked in a deep tone.
"I..." Neveah began but she did not have the right words, she did not think there were any words that were right for this.
Hurting King Jian was the last thing Neveah wanted to do, but denying Xenon was something she just could not do.
"Neveah... what are you truly scared of? That Xenon will be unable to let you go? Or that he will?" King Jian asked again, this time he fixed Neveah with a questioning look.
Neveah tried to avoid his gaze but she could not, the moment her eyes met those mismatched orbs, the intensity in them told Neveah that she would never be able to hide anything from this man.
Was she more scared of Xenon’s inability to let her go? Or was it the thought of him actually letting her go that truly terrified Neveah?
Neveah already knew the answer to that.
"I love Xenon. I have loved Xenon for a long time..." Neveah confessed in a voice barely above a whisper.
Neveah exhaled shakily, she had never actually said those words out loud, not even to herself.
Neveah had spent all this time fighting how she truly felt about Xenon, denying it even to herself that it had grown to be a huge knot in her heart.
Saying it out loud like this, Neveah felt like a huge burden had been lifted off her chest and she could finally breathe freely.
Even if the person she was admitting it to was the one person who would not want to hear that she was in love with another man.
But it was in respect to King Jian that the truth was said as early as was possible.
"I have known that for a long time... I saw it for myself..." King Jian murmured.
Neveah bit down on her bottom lip, King Jian had witnessed her kissing Xenon on Mount Edar and Neveah had never really cared much of what he thought of it up until this moment.
"Are you asking me to let you go to him?" King Jian asked, his tone was calm but there was an underlying tinge to it that Neveah could not quite decipher.
"I... I cannot ask that of you." Neveah whispered.
"Would you have me do that? Severe our bond?" King Jian rephrased his question, this time his tone was completely unpleasant, like the word itself was bitter on his tongue.
Neveah winced visibly, the mere thought of it caused a sharp ache in her heart.
"I... I do not know what to do. The thought of rejecting you... severing our bond, I cannot conceive doing that to you... this is too much for me." Neveah said, her voice cracking slightly.
"I will never severe my bond with you, Neveah. Not even if my life depended on it." King Jian made clear.
Despite the situation, Neveah found those words reassuring and the pain in her heart eased away.
"I just...need time to think...find an answer. I hope you can understand that I cannot turn off my feelings for Xenon like they mean nothing..." Neveah made a difficult ask.
"I understand. I have been here from the start..." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"I knew of his love for you from the moment he told me he wanted a girl from the far wolf terrain...I detested you for it too, how could I not understand?" King Jian said, more to himself than to Neveah.
"All I have thought you to be was just another pretty face... Xenon was already so broken, you were nothing but trouble. He was too invested... just like he had been with..." King Jian trailed off.
"Misha." Neveah completed.
King Jian passed a surprised look to Neveah.
"He told you?" King Jian asked.
"Not much was said... the breach, he had to leave." Neveah replied.
"What truly happened? Between you, Xenon and Misha? Xenon keeps saying he did you a great wrong...but he loves you more than anything, more than anyone...I just cannot fathom it." Neveah asked in bafflement.
King Jian was quiet for a long moment before he spoke.
"He let her into his mind." King Jian said.
Neveah frowned in confusion, she was not certain what King Jian’s words meant.
"You see, one of the most terrible arts of sorcery is mind manipulation. And after centuries of being subjected to it, dragons developed a resistance...a form of mind block."
"It is not that we are impervious to dark magic, it is only that we devised a method to ensure our mind is always protected... illusions, mind control...none of this work on us." King Jian explained.
"But Xenon he trusted Misha with such absoluteness, he let her through his defence...into his mind. And before we realized she could wield dark magic, she made him do horrid things..." King Jian revealed.
"Misha... she wanted to be Queen. Overthrowing my dynasty and turning my brother against me was my punishment." King Jian murmured.
"Punishment? What did you ever do wrong to her?" Neveah asked.
"Sharing the blood of the dragon king who ordered the annihilation of her kind." King Jian replied with a dry chuckle.
"Asrig... all along, revenge was her goal." Neveah muttered in understanding.
"A goal she was willing to sacrifice her own bonded for. Everything she made Xenon do... broke him one piece at a time."
"It is one thing to see darkness and hate it, and it is another thing entirely to become the darkness you have hated all your life...but it is not my story to tell." King Jian muttered, his tone weary.
"Of all she dealt him, what truly destroyed Xenon was when she made him challenge me for my throne, a battle to the death." King Jian paused,
Tilting his head back, he breathed a heavy sigh, while Neveah herself was in horrified silence.
