On Our Wedding Day My Husband Announced His First Love Online-Chapter 13: Clara Langley Commits Suicide
I didn’t register what she said at first. "Isn’t he in the dressing room? Did he go out to greet the guests?"
After all, Theodore Grant was the man of the hour; no one would be busier than him.
Chloe Miller pressed her lips together. "I asked the makeup artist. She said Theodore took a call and left."
My heart sank. "Whose call?"
"I don’t know."
Although that’s what Chloe said, she clearly had a suspect in mind, gritting her teeth as she hissed, "I knew that little bitch Clara Langley wouldn’t just stay quiet!"
"Chelsea, call Theodore Grant right now. This is your wedding day. We can’t have anything go wrong!"
I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed Theodore’s number, but all I got was a recorded message: ’Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently switched off.’
"His phone is off."
Only then did the gravity of the situation hit me.
The ceremony was in less than an hour, and most of the guests had already arrived.
Given the Grant Family’s standing in Kington, if Theodore Grant didn’t show up today...
The moment that thought crossed my mind, the world started to spin.
I grabbed Chloe Miller’s wrist in a panic, my voice trembling. "Is my mom here yet?"
Chloe pursed her lips. "She’s been here for a while."
"What do I do?" I was frantic.
’I don’t care if I have to stand at the altar alone and endure everyone’s ridicule, but my mom absolutely cannot find out. Her health is too fragile to handle any kind of shock!’
"I’ll go find your older brother right now and have him come up with an excuse to take your mom back to the hospital." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"Okay." I nodded quickly. "I’m counting on you for my mom."
"Don’t panic. First, call Noah Brown and ask if he can get in touch with Theodore Grant. Also, find your mother-in-law and get her help." As expected of a regional director for a major corporation, Chloe Miller was decisive and fearless in a crisis.
I couldn’t help but take a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down.
As soon as Chloe left, I immediately called Noah Brown.
The call connected quickly.
"Where is Theodore Grant?" I didn’t beat around the bush and got straight to the point.
Noah Brown was silent on the other end.
I took another deep breath. "Noah Brown, today is my wedding to Theodore Grant. All of Kington’s most prominent figures are here. Do you want the entire Grant Family to become the laughingstock of the city?"
Noah clearly understood the severity of the situation. He gritted his teeth and said, "President Grant just got a call from the hospital. They said Miss Langley was admitted after a suicide attempt."
It was as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head.
The last shred of hope I had was instantly extinguished.
My knees gave out, and my body swayed. I almost couldn’t stay on my feet.
’This must be what it feels like to be struck by lightning, to fall into utter despair.’
’He promised me.’
’He said he wouldn’t get entangled with Clara Langley again.’
’But the moment he heard Clara Langley tried to kill herself, he still abandoned me to go see her!’
’But why today of all days?’
’This was the wedding he personally promised me. He knew how important today was.’
’But in Theodore Grant’s heart, none of that could ever outweigh Clara Langley!’
I clutched the phone, silent for a long time.
It was as if I couldn’t even hear what Noah Brown was saying to me anymore.
I felt a knife twist viciously in my chest, the pain so sharp I could barely breathe.
"Young Madam, I’m almost at the hospital. Don’t worry, as soon as I find President Grant, I’ll bring him back!" Noah Brown said in a low voice. "But... I’ll have to ask you to stall for a little more time..."
The ceremony was less than an hour away.
But the hospital Clara Langley had been taken to was over an hour’s round trip from the wedding venue!
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to be calm. I knew that being heartbroken was useless right now; I had to do everything I could to minimize the damage.
’At the very least, my mom can’t find out.’
’As for everything else—’
’After this wedding, I’m going to make a clean break...’
...
"That bastard son, Theodore Grant! Just you wait and see how I deal with him this time!" My mother-in-law rushed over when she heard the news, clearly frantic as well.
The Grant Family’s reputation was at stake. What’s more, Theodore was the heir designated by Mr. Grant himself. If he made a fool of himself, the entire Grant Family would be shamed!
"What’s the situation? Did Noah Brown find him?" she asked anxiously.
I parted my lips, but before I could speak, my phone suddenly vibrated—it was a call from Noah Brown.
Seeing this, my mother-in-law snatched the phone and answered it. "Noah Brown, did you find Theodore Grant?"
As if not expecting my mother-in-law to answer, Noah Brown hesitated for a moment before quickly replying, "Don’t worry, Madam. I’ve found President Grant. We’re heading back to the hotel now."
Hearing this, my mother-in-law breathed a sigh of relief. Only then did she remember it was time to settle the score. "Where’s Theodore Grant? Put him on the phone!"
Noah’s voice faltered, clearly in a difficult position. "President Grant said he’ll explain everything to you when he gets back."
My mother-in-law knew this wasn’t the time to deal with him, but she still got in a harsh word. "You tell him to just wait! I’ll deal with him after the wedding is over!"
After she hung up, a look of relief finally appeared on her face.
Since Theodore Grant was on his way back, it was just a matter of time.
’As long as the wedding isn’t delayed, it’ll be fine.’
"Chelsea, don’t you worry. When Theodore gets back, I’ll help you teach him a lesson!" My mother-in-law patted my hand reassuringly. "Just go out there when it’s time. You don’t need to worry about a thing. I’ve already spoken with the emcee."
I took a deep breath. Just as the makeup artist came over to touch up my makeup, Chloe Miller came rushing back.
"How did it go?" I asked her immediately.
"Your mom won’t leave. She insists on staying to watch the ceremony. Your brother is still trying to figure something out..." Beads of sweat dotted Chloe’s forehead. Noticing my mother-in-law was still there, she leaned close to my ear and whispered, "Did they find that son of a bitch Theodore Grant?"
I nodded. "They found him. He’s on his way back."
Chloe patted her chest and let out a long sigh of relief. "That’s good."
Since Chloe Miller was my maid of honor, she would be going up on stage with me.
The hotel ballroom was decorated like a fantastical dreamscape, a fairyland—the kind of wedding venue almost every girl longed for.
But as I stood in the waiting area, listening to the emcee’s witty banter warming up the crowd, everyone was laughing and joking, but I couldn’t even manage a smile.
My gaze traveled past the stage to my mother, who was sitting at the VIP table of honor. Though her face was weary, her eyes were full of smiles, the corners crinkling with happiness and hope.
But just then, a commotion suddenly erupted in the lively ballroom. Some people were looking down at their phones, while others were whispering to each other.
For some reason, a terrible premonition washed over me.
"What’s going on with everyone?"
Standing behind me, Chloe Miller’s brow furrowed, her voice tense. "Don’t tell me people found out that bastard Theodore Grant ditched the wedding?"
My heart filled with trepidation. Just as my anxiety peaked, a tall, imposing figure strode toward me.
It was Sebastian Forrest. He slightly raised his eyes, his black pupils deep and unreadable. Even from several meters away, I could feel his overwhelming, oppressive aura.
"Senior Forrest..." Seeing his expression, I grew even more uneasy. "What’s wrong? Did something happen?"
"Theodore Grant isn’t here, is he?" Though it was phrased as a question, his tone was certain.
My heart sank. ’So he knows.’
Seeing my silence, Sebastian Forrest knew I was tacitly confirming it. A flicker of fire seemed to flash in his eyes, and his voice turned cold and flat. "Are you still going to stay here?"
His question shook me, making me even more unsettled. "Senior Forrest, what exactly happened?"
