Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Don’t You Want to Have This Wedding Anymore?

Sebastian Forrest’s thin lips were pressed into a tight line. He looked down at me, his gaze deep.

But before he could speak, Chloe Miller tugged on my arm from behind, handing me her phone. "Chelsea," she said through clenched teeth, "the scandal with Clara Langley and Theodore Grant is all over the trending topics!"

I took the phone instinctively. On the main trending page, the scandal about Clara Langley took up the top three spots!

My vision swam. I never thought social media would be the first place for this to blow up!

But I couldn’t worry about anything else right now. I immediately gathered the skirt of my wedding dress and ran toward my mother in the audience.

"Chelsea, what is it? What happened?" my mother asked, her face etched with anxiety. Clearly, sitting among the guests, she’d overheard some of the whispers. "I... I heard them saying Theodore Grant ran away. It has to be a misunderstanding, right? Where is he?"

My heart sank. So, I hadn’t been able to hide it from her after all.

"No, Mom, don’t listen to their nonsense. Theodore Grant went to pick someone up. He’ll be here any second."

My mom shook her head. "I’m not listening to them. You call Theodore Grant. I want to hear it from him myself..."

"Mom..."

"If you won’t call, I will." My mom immediately pulled out her phone and made a move to call Theodore Grant.

Seeing this, I quickly grabbed her hand. "Okay, okay, I’ll call."

I knew I couldn’t win against her, so I had no choice but to bite the bullet and dial Theodore Grant’s number.

The phone rang for a long time, unanswered.

Meeting my mother’s anxious, hopeful gaze, I grew desperate. ’Come on, Theodore, pick up the phone!’

It was as if Theodore Grant had heard my prayers. Finally, the call went through!

But the voice that came through the speaker wasn’t Theodore Grant’s.

"Oh, Theodore, get up. You’re on my hair." Clara Langley’s petulant voice came through the phone, crystal clear.

My mother froze, as if she couldn’t believe her ears. Her eyes, already bloodshot, stood out starkly against her deathly pale face.

Just then, a rustling sound came through the phone, like the friction of clothing.

My eyes widened in disbelief. Every little sound from the phone was like a sharpened blade stabbing into my chest, twisting again and again, threatening to rip out flesh and blood with each thrust. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"Shut up!"

A moment later, Theodore Grant’s sharp reprimand came through. Then, his tone shifted. "Stop rushing me. I’m almost there."

"Theodore, I can’t reach. Can you get the zipper for me...?"

My mother’s lips parted as if to speak, but her breath caught in her throat. Even her fingertips began to tremble.

"Mom..." I quickly hung up and grabbed my mother to steady her. "It’s not what you think. It’s all a misunderstanding..."

But before I could finish, with a sickening SPURT, a spray of crimson mist erupted before my eyes!

"Oh my god!"

I heard Chloe Miller’s horrified shriek, but a buzzing noise filled my head, wiping my mind completely blank. The scene before me seemed to freeze.

"Mom!"

The instant I snapped out of it, I pulled my mother into my arms. Her face was ashen, and blood was pouring from the corners of her mouth, trickling down her chin in rivulets.

Tears burst from my eyes, and my fingertips trembled uncontrollably.

"Get her to a hospital, now!"

At that, Sebastian Forrest bent down, swept my mom up in his arms, and immediately turned and ran outside.

Dazed and distraught, I tried to run after them, but my heel caught and I twisted my ankle, sending me pitching forward.

"Chelsea!" Chloe Miller caught me with lightning-fast reflexes, her own face still pale with shock. "Are you okay?"

I shook my head. A searing pain shot through my ankle, but I felt nothing. Tearing off my heels, I limped after Sebastian Forrest.

Sebastian Forrest drove at a breakneck speed, running who knows how many red lights along the way.

The moment his car screeched to a halt at the hospital entrance, a team of doctors and nurses—alerted by his call—was already there, rushing my mother into the emergency room.

As the red light above the ER doors lit up, I stood there, utterly defeated. An exhaustion that seemed to seep from every cell washed over me, so heavy it was hard to breathe.

"What happened to your foot?"

Just then, Sebastian Forrest, with a slight frown, looked down at my already red and swollen ankle. "Where are your shoes?"

But it was as if I hadn’t heard him. I just kept staring, lost and frantic, at that glowing red light.

Sebastian Forrest’s lips pressed into a thin line. Without another word, he bent down, swept me into his arms, and carried me in long strides to a nearby bench.

"I’m fine."

When I saw Sebastian Forrest take off his own dress shoes and crouch down to put them on my feet, I finally snapped out of my daze and tried to pull my foot away.

"Don’t move. Your ankle is sprained; you can’t let it get cold." Sebastian Forrest looked up at me, his voice gentle and deep, yet it held an authority that brooked no argument.

His warmth radiated from the leather, slowly warming my cold foot.

But that small bit of warmth was all it took for my tears to spill over, completely beyond my control.

I tried to choke them back, to hold my breath, but the string I’d held taut for so long finally, uncontrollably, snapped.

I covered my face with my hands and finally broke down, wailing, letting out all the hurt, panic, and terror I had bottled up.

I don’t know how long I cried. I only knew that by the time I was finished and a sliver of rationality returned, I found myself with my head pressed against a broad chest, a large hand gently stroking my hair in silent comfort.

"I’m sorry."

I quickly pulled away from Sebastian Forrest’s embrace and added, "And thank you."

Sebastian Forrest gazed down at me. "Don’t worry," he said softly. "Jude Miller is on the case. He’s an incredible doctor. Your mother will be fine."

My tears had stopped. I just nodded, repeating his words as if to convince myself. "Yes. My mother will be fine."

Sebastian Forrest didn’t say anything more, just sat there quietly with me.

The corridor was deathly silent, broken only by the soft footsteps of a passing nurse.

But this quiet atmosphere didn’t last long before my phone suddenly started vibrating.

It was a call from Theodore Grant.

And when I saw those two words—’Theodore Grant’—my heart, which had just calmed down, started to tremble uncontrollably.

I never imagined that one day, all the love I had for Theodore Grant would turn to hate...

The phone was still vibrating.

I took a deep breath and finally pressed the answer button.

"Chelsea Joyce, where are you? Everyone is waiting for you! Did you decide you don’t want to get married after all?" Theodore Grant’s accusatory tone stabbed at me through the phone, each word a painful cut.

"Yes," I said, my voice eerily calm. "It’s off."
