Chapter 38: Chapter 38 — Thirty-eight

"It is over." Grant collapsed to the floor, falling on one knee.

The guests looked at the couple and they shook their heads.

"We should leave. We do not want to be on Alexander’s bad side." One said, and walked out, but not without scoffing at Grant and Elena.

The rest of the guests filed out, while making sure they cut ties with the couple.

"How could Serena be affiliated with Alexander?" Grant murmured under his breath.

"You shouldn’t be worried about how Serena knows him. Instead, you should think about how you would salvage this situation. There is no way those old geezers would want to cooperate with us after today." Elena advised.

Grant looked at the hall which had already been deserted and he nodded. "You are right. The biggest issue now is to improve our reputation."

"There is no way they would want to work with us after what happened today. It isn’t helping matters that Alexander is involved in this as well. The company would take a major hit"

Grant sighed tiredly. Years of hard work threatened to be destroyed.

While the couple were brainstorming on how to salvage their reputation, Alexander placed Serena in the backseat of the car.

As he was about to leave, she held him back. He turned to her. Looking at her pale face, he clenched his fists tightly.

But he forced a smile on his face as he said. "Be good. I will drive you to the hospital to have your injuries treated."

"I... have a question." With great difficulty, Serena forced the words out while breathing heavily.

"Save your breath. Don’t speak. Just conserve your energy." Alexander rubbed her hair.

"Why did you save me?" Serena bit out. Her eyes held curiosity as she stared straight into his eyes.

Alexander held her gaze. He didn’t know why he saved her. He only knew that when he saw the blood on her back, something snapped in him.

"I’ll tell you later." He smiled softly. "For now, you need to have your injuries treated or they could get infected."

Without waiting for her reply, Alexander walked to the driver’s seat. His heart twisted as several dangerous thoughts ran through his mind. He wanted to deal with Grant.

Hospital>

Serena was placed in a stretcher as they wheeled her to the emergency room. Alexander watched as she was wheeled in..

"My poor Serena," Mama who was being supported by Maya whispered heartbreakingly..

"Ever since her mom died, that poor child had to face a lot. She even left the house." She sniffed while wiping her tears. "She returned today only to be faced with this. I have no idea how a father could treat his daughter so cruelly."

Alexander listened to Mama’s cries, and his expression hardened. He fished out his phone from his pocket, then made a phone call.

"I want Wilson Corps bankrupt. Now." Came his swift instructions.

Maya turned to look at him, and her face softened. ’It is good that Serena has someone who can fight for her.’ She thought to herself as her lips slowly curved.

"Is Serena’s mom’s bakery under Wilson Corps?" Alexander turned to the duo, snapping Maya out of her thoughts.

Mama looked up at him with her tear-filled eyes, then nodded.

Alexander’s gaze deepened. "What is its name?"

"Rena’s Confectioneries." She answered.

Alexander returned to his phone call. "Did you hear that? I don’t care how you want to do it, it must be saved. And I want the papers of ownership by tomorrow. If you are unable to do this, then consider yourself jobless."

He didn’t wait for the person’s reply as he disconnected the call.

"Mama, I didn’t see Jessica. Didn’t she attend her dad’s birthday party?" Maya asked curiously, her voice falling into Alexander’s ears.

"Jessica?" He asked slowly.

"Yes. Jessica is also an employee of your company and is Serena’s stepsister." Maya replied honestly.

Alexander nodded. "Now I know why she bullies her." He murmured, then swiftly sent a text.

Maya watched him, and she suddenly had a bad feeling..

"Boss, you are not going to fire her, are you?" She probed carefully.

Alexander smiled softly, but didn’t reply.

Maya swallowed. She believed that something terrible was about to happen to Jessica.

A few minutes later, the doctor stepped out.

Alexander walked to the doctor who sighed as he removed his mask.

"How is she?" Alexander asked, his gaze fixated on the doctor.

"Well, she’s out of danger. She suffered a lot of injuries." He answered, and relief flooded through the trio’s chest.

"Thank you. Can we see her now?" Mama requested, her hands cupped together.

"Yes you can. Mr. Blackwood, I’d like to have a word with you, if you don’t mind." The doctor stated.

Alexander’s brows furrowed, but he nodded in agreement. He gestured for the two ladies to see Serena.

A few seconds later, Alexander was seated opposite the doctor.

"What do you want to talk about?" Alexander asked with his hands folded. His expression was blank, but his eyes held the right amount of concern in them.

The doctor took a deep breath before he continued. "While treating her, we found something in her body. I don’t know if she is aware of it."

Alexander sat upright seeing that the doctor’s expression was grave.

"What is the problem?" He inquired, his palms gripping the armrest tightly.

"She is suffering from internal bleeding. If appropriate care is not taken, she could lose her life." The doctor explained.

Alexander sank into his chair, his gaze darkening. "What are your thoughts about the bleeding? Do you know its source?"

He could guess the reason for this. But he needed to be completely sure—that extra confirmation was the only thing he required.

The doctor hesitated, his fingers tapping lightly against the file in his hands.

"There are signs that this didn’t start today," he said carefully. "The bleeding appears to have been aggravated by the injuries she sustained tonight, but the condition itself... predates this incident."

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

"How long?" he asked quietly.

"It’s difficult to say without further tests," the doctor replied. "But it’s possible she’s been living with this for a while. Stress, physical strain, or previous trauma could have worsened it."

Alexander’s grip on the armrest hardened until his knuckles turned white.

"She didn’t say anything," he muttered, more to himself than the doctor. "She acts strong, never asking for help."

The doctor met his gaze. "She will need immediate surgery. We’re preparing the operating room now."

As the words sank in, only one thought thundered through Alexander’s mind—

Was she pushed this far by the people she is meant to call family... and how much time had he already lost?
