Chapter 98: Chapter 98 — Ninety-eight

The car rolled to a stop at a very huge mansion. Luxury cars lined up.

Serena took in the sight, and she was stunned.

"Where... where’s this?" She asked, stuttering.

"Grandpa Miles’s mansion." Alexander replied. "Don’t leave the car yet." He instructed, causing Serena to be taken aback.

Alexander walked around the car, and opened the car’s door for her. He outstretched his hand, and Serena chuckled softly before placing her hand into his.

"What are we doing here?" She probed, her eyes darting around. "And why are there many cars?" She asked cluelessly.

"You will know soon." He replied with a mysterious smile.

They both walked in with their arms interlocked. When they walked in, the hall door was pushed open and all eyes turned to them.

Serena froze as she took in the sight. Chandeliers hung, casting a warm glow. Male and female both moved, their dresses and suits shimmering.

Serena had attended a high class event with Alexander, no doubt. But this... this was on another level. It felt like the gathering of the wealth and opulence.

As they walked, the crowd made way for them and they walked in their midst. Serena’s grip on Alexander’s arm tightened. "They are all staring." She muttered under her breath.

"Take a deep breath. You don’t have to worry about them." He rubbed her hand soothingly.

Serena took a deep breath. The assurance that Alexander was there with her was enough for her.

They finally reached Miles and Elias’s side. When Miles laid his eyes on Serena, his eyes softened, and something warm flowed through them.

"I’m so glad you are here, Serena." He muttered, pulling her into his arms.

Just like before, the strong pull of the familiarity within Serena was flowing through her.

"Grandpa Miles, Grandpa Elias." She smiled softly.

"Serena is looking very beautiful today, don’t you think so?" Elias complimented.

"You are right." Miles nodded. Then added, "you lads should have fun. Your grandpa and I would speak to the guests."

Before Alexander could reply, Elias and Miles walked away.

"Would you like to sit? It seems you are not really good with heels." He pointed out.

Serena laughed softly. "As expected, you’re the only one who knows me best." She then sighed. "I’m not really good with heels."

"Okay." Alexander replied softly, and led her to a seat. Some envious eyes remained on Serena as they watched Alexander’s attentive attitude.

"She’s so lucky."

"I know right."

"Alexander doesn’t even act this way with women he is considered close to."

"Is he even close to women?"

"Who’s she even?"

Different murmurs entered Serena’s ears, and her lips twitched slightly.

"I had no idea that you were this popular." She murmured as Alexander handed her a plate of pastries.

"If you say I’m popular, then I’m popular." He winked at her and she shook her head.

"You are crazy." She commented, taking a bite out of the pastries.

"Crazy only for you, baby." He blew a kiss and her cheeks turned red.

Just as Serena was about to reply, they heard a sound.

Miles.

"Good evening everyone."

All eyes turned to Miles who was being helped by Cody.

Serena’s brows shot up when she saw Cody. "Cody is here?" She asked, her voice betraying her surprise.

"Yes." Alexander nodded, his arm wrapped around Serena’s shoulders. "I forgot to inform you that Cody is Grandpa Miles’s grandson."

Serena nodded, clearly surprised by the development. No wonder the two were best friends. Shs thought to herself. Turns out they grew up together.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the large applause. She looked around and took in the sight.

"Just like my Grandfather, Grandpa Miles is also a respected veteran. He served in the military alongside my grandfather. After being discharged from the military, they both decided to go into business. And just like the military, they succeeded."

Within a few seconds, Alexander basically informed Serena about both old men’s achievements..

"Thank you for the warm applause. It gladdens me to know that I still have this effect despite being old." He laughed afterwards, causing the guests to laugh as well. Serena smiled softly too.

"Today, I’m hosting this banquet because I’m about to announce something interesting and... revealing." He paused, his gaze sweeping over everyone.

Everyone took in a deep breath as the air of mystery took over.

"A lot of you should know about my daughter, Regina Hale." He started, sighing.

The ambience in the hall changed. Almost everyone knew about the legendary Regina Hale. She was the most beloved daughter of Old Man Hale..

Unfortunately, she took her father’s love for granted and eloped with a man who was beneath her league.

Serena took in a deep breath when she heard her mother’s name. She turned to Alexander as though asking for a question.

He gave her an assuring smile. But unfortunately, his smile didn’t do anything to calm the raging storm in her mind. She seemed to have an inkling about what was going on, but she was scared... scared to face the future.

The feeling within her when she stepped out of the salon earlier came back... and this time it came back stronger. Something was about to change.

Miles didn’t know about Serena’s heart hammering in her chest as he continued his speech.

"Looking at your expressions, I believe you know about her." He paused, chuckled, then continued, "I thought I had lost my daughter forever, but fate does have its way of toying with us."

"My daughter, Gina got married against my wish to a man which I approved against. She died not long after having a daughter."

Everyone took in a deep breath as they listened to him. They would never have imagined that the belle of the elite society was... dead.

"But all hope is not lost." Miles laughed softly, wiping a lone tear away from his eyes. "I never thought that I’d meet my granddaughter, someone who bears a very significant resemblance to my daughter. And I’m pleased to announce that she is here in this room with us."

As soon as he was done, the murmurs began among the guests. Regina is dead. But she had a daughter before dying. And the daughter was present in this banquet.

They all looked around trying to find who bore a significant resemblance to the late Regina.

"I’m hosting this banquet to introduce my long-lost granddaughter." His voice was reverberant. "Now, without further ado, I’d love to introduce my granddaughter, Serena Hale."

With his announcement, the spotlight shone on Serena where it could be seen that she was sitting frozen with her face pale.

Everyone’s gaze turned to Serena and they all broke into several murmurs. They were still filled with disbelief.

Her grip on Alexander was tightly firm as her chest rose and fell.

"It’s not possible. Impossible. How could it be that Grandpa Miles is my grandfather?" She asked herself, shaking herself while still in doubt.

"Serena, come up." Miles’s voice was filled with restraint as though he was holding back his tears.

Alexander could see that Serena was still in doubt, so he helped her up as they walked to the stage.

Once they reached, Serena was still in a state of shock. Thankfully, she wasn’t the only one who was in a state of shock.

Cody, who was still standing on the stage, was wide-eyed. He looked at Alexander who didn’t seem shocked, and then turned to Serena who was still pale. After Serena was steady, Alexander went away from the stage giving the spotlight to her only.

"How is this possible?" He asked under his breath, still in disbelief.

Miles was all smiles as he looked at Serena. "You can see the similarities between my daughter and I."

"Actually, I was in a state of disbelief when I met with her a few days ago, courtesy of my old friend, Elias. Thank you buddy, I owe you one."

Elias raised his glass, and they all laughed, the tense atmosphere relaxing.

"So, let me continue with my story. I met Serena at the restaurant where Elias wanted to brag about his grandson’s girlfriend. Never would I have expected that she’d turn out to be my granddaughter." He paused, and sighed. "You might think that I’m too forward thinking someone is my granddaughter just by the resemblance. I know you all have doubts. I did as well, but I cleared it when I performed the DNA test."

Then his firm tone rang out. "This is my granddaughter, Serena Hale and she would always remain one."

After his speeches, a deafening applause rang out.

Miles held Serena as they walked down the stage. He gave a subtle hint to Cody who snapped out of his disbelief.

He took a deep breath before saying quickly, "thank you all for attending and celebrating with our family. You all can make merry now." After he was done, he rushed off the stage.

Miles, on the other hand, led Serena to his table and made her seat.

"Am I really your granddaughter?" Serena suddenly asked, staring straight into his eyes.
