Chapter 99: Chapter 99 — Ninety-nine

Serena blurted out, her eyes searching Miles’s. "Are you really my grandfather? You are not lying, are you?".

Miles shook his head, tears gathering in his eyes. "You are really my granddaughter." He wiped the tears from his eyes, and gestured for Cody who was still trying to process things to come.

"The folder." He demanded. Cody handed it to him.

When Miles turned to face Serena, his expression was softer. "I know I shouldn’t have done this DNA test without your knowledge," he started, then sighed, "but I couldn’t help myself. You bear such a huge resemblance to Regina and it made me really curious."

Serena listened to him quietly. She knew that she always had an uncanny resemblance to her mom. But one thing struck her while Miles was speaking. "How did you get my sample?" Her eyes were narrowed as she stared at him warily.

"I knew it was going to come back to haunt you." Elias’s voice sounded from behind.

He then turned to Serena, and said, "child, your grandfather was curious and eager for answers. So during lunch a few days ago, he pretended to arrange your hair and was able to get a strand of your hair."

He explained it to her while throwing a subtle glance at Miles who rubbed his forehead cheekily. "I couldn’t do it with your knowledge. That’d be... crazy."

Serena took a deep breath. "I-I don’t know what to say. All of these are just hard for me to take in, honestly." She looked up, her eyes teary. "I thought I was alone, with no family. And now—" she paused, taking a deep breath. "—I find out I have a grandfather. It’s so unreal."

"You are not wrong to feel this way, but you only need to embrace this new identity of yours." Alexander’s voice sounded from above. Miles nodded, agreeing to his words.

Serena looked at him, and commented, "you knew about this, didn’t you? This was why you were being sneaky today."

Alexander shrugged, then smiled. "Technically, I didn’t know about it. I only had an intuition." He laughed softly.

Serena chuckled still finding everything to be unbelievable.

"Wait a minute. I still don’t understand what’s going on. I know I had an Aunt, but how is she related to Serena? Can someone please explain things to me?" He asked, his eyes darting from Alexander to his grandfather.

Miles struggled with the folder before bringing out a paper that read, ’DNA Test.’ "This proves that you’re really my granddaughter. We can do another test if you’re not sure." Miles suggested. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Serena shook her head immediately, then stated. "It’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just that... it’s a lot to handle. Imagine finding out about a family you never knew existed. That’s how I feel at this moment."

Alexander held her by her shoulder. "It’s okay for you to doubt it, it’s normal. But don’t wait too long before you accept them. Your grandfather really loves you."

Serena looked at Miles whose expression was softened and she felt a tight knot in her heart. His hair was grey, and his back looked a bit hunch. His face was filled with wrinkles which was evidence of the vicissitudes he faced while trying to give his family a good life.

"If you don’t wish to call me Grandpa now, you can take your time. I don’t mind as long as you call me that at your convenience." He spoke up, snapping Serena out of her thoughts.

Serena looked at him gratefully. He seemed to understand her plight.

"Thank you." She smiled softly.

Miles was a bit disappointed, but he consoled himself. They had enough time to become comfortable with each other.

"Where are you staying now? Now that everyone knows that you’re my granddaughter, you can live with us. I have so many things to catch up with you on." Miles suggested, staring at Serena expectantly.

"Actually—"

"She’s currently staying at my place." Alexander cut in.

Miles’s expression changed as he stated explicitly, "that won’t do. No child of Hale should live outside."

With his strong words, the air cracked with slight tension.

Alexander was about to speak when Serena stopped him by placing her hand on his, then shook her head while looking at him.

She then turned to Miles, "let’s have fun with the banquet first. We will settle my residence later, don’t you think?" She said softly.

Miles stared at her for a while. He was about to answer when Elias interrupted.

"I believe that Serena has a point. The point of a banquet is to have fun, and not debate where one will stay."

Serena gave Elias a grateful smile. At least, one person understood her.

"Old friend, our other friends are here. Let’s go entertain them." Elias directly pulled Miles away without allowing him to speak.

After the two old men left, Serena, Alexander and Cody remained.

Cody’s gaze was fixated on Serena who fixed her hair while wondering why he was staring at her intensely. Alexander sensed it and he frowned.

He came to stand in front of Serena as he flared at his best friend. "What do you think you’re doing staring at my girlfriend with such eyes?" His eyes were cold, as he folded his arms while completely blocking Cody’s view from Serena.

Cody sighed. "She’s my cousin. I’m surprised, shocked..." he trailed off, running a hand through his hair. "...this situation is... eye-opening. I have a cousin. Different emotions are flowing through me currently."

"Aren’t you happy? If you aren’t, I can take her away now." Alexander threatened.

"What? No!" Cody exclaimed, waving his hands. "If you take her," he paused, his voice dropping lower, "my grandfather would kill me. I’m your best friend, I haven’t even proposed to the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with."

Serena listened to the two men’s conversation and she chuckled. "Alexander, you’re obstructing my view." She complained softly.

Alexander turned to look at her for a while before he took a seat. Cody also took a seat as he said to Serena. "So, you’re really my cousin." He chuckled.

Serena exhaled. "I guess this is how things would be going forward."

Cody laughed softly. "What an ironic twist of fate." He lamented. But the buzzing of his phone disrupted the moment.

He brought his phone out, and looked at the caller ID.

"Maya?" He murmured under his breath, while Serena’s ears perked up. He picked the call, but heard panting across the line.

"Save me..."
