Otherworldly Affairs Office-Chapter 859: Reunion with an Old Friend
"While I wasn't around during those times, has there been any change in the battle with the Disaster Legion?" Pei Yan declined the maid's service, lazily sitting in the main hall after bathing alone, enjoying the endless stream of delicacies being presented. He casually asked, suddenly feeling that being flattered wasn't such a bad thing after all.
"Prince..."
"Don't call me Prince! Sifuer, we are old friends now! There are no outsiders here; just call me Pei Yan or Mr. Pei if that suits you better!" Pei Yan interrupted Sifuer with a wave of his hand and said with a smile.
Hearing this, the originally tense Sifuer visibly relaxed, her stiff expression softened into a genuine smile as she said: "Alright then, Mr. Pei. In the few months since you left, there hasn't been much change with the Disaster Legion and us. During the Sword Discussion Conference, they attempted several times to sever the connections between the Holy City and the outside world. Both sides had victories and losses, and the route to the Holy City is currently occupied by the Disaster Legion."
Seeing Pei Yan frown unhappily, Sifuer quickly added: "But that's not a problem, because after the last great battle, we have sealed the Earth's veins in this area. They can't erect a Disaster Pillar to affect our army, so the occupation is only temporary. Now, the allied forces of the Holy City and the outside world are planning to reclaim the lost ground. I think within a few days, the route to the Holy City will be reopened."
"A few days? But I don't have that much time to waste here!" Pei Yan put down his cutlery, wiped the corner of his mouth with a napkin, and rested his hand on his forehead in distress.
"Um, Prince, if you are in a hurry, there is a small path leading to the Holy City. It's far from the main road and the Blood Demon Army camp. Although you can't pass with an army, it's certainly fine for one or two people. I can send someone to guide you to the Holy City," Leohard, the commander of the Thorn Flower Knight Order standing beside Sifuer, stepped forward, bowed, and interjected upon hearing their conversation.
Looking at the humble demeanor of the Knight Order commander who once provoked him, Pei Yan did not find it inappropriate and casually tossed the napkin aside, asking, "How long will it take?"
"It will take one or two days longer than taking the main road. Although that small path is inconspicuous, the Disaster Legion has eyes on it. If someone is detected smuggling through, a patrol team will be dispatched to hunt them down. Previous messenger teams tried hard to avoid detection. However, given your prowess, forcing your way through just means taking a slightly longer detour, and you'll probably reach the Holy City in a day," Leohard responded respectfully.
"Understood. Prepare a guide. I'll check the situation at the front tomorrow before deciding." Pei Yan said as he stood up, prompting all the nobles who dined with him to rise as well. Pei Yan waved his hand, "At ease. I returned this time for urgent matters and must depart for the Holy City tomorrow, so I can't drink with you all to reminisce. It's a pity. But in the future, I hope to return here, fight the Disaster alongside you, and reclaim victory. I'll thank you all for your hospitality this time; I'll save the remaining drinks for a good celebration upon my return."
Saying this, Pei Yan raised his glass and downed the wine in one gulp. His bold gesture instantly won the goodwill of the other nobles, who followed suit, draining their glasses before sending him off in a chorus of farewells, watching him gracefully leave the banquet hall.
Sifuer watched Pei Yan's carefree back, her heart mixed with emotions. The man before her had transformed from the impulsive youth she first met into a powerful figure capable of winning hearts with a mere gesture, and all this change happened in just five years. In those five years, she had hitched a ride on his success, elevating her family from nearly being delisted to reclaiming status as a prestigious family. Just when she thought she might be worthy of him with her regained noble title and family strength, he stunned everyone at the Sword Discussion Conference, becoming a top contender among the younger generation across several realms.
She could no longer keep pace with him!
When the well-rested Pei Yan saw Sifuer with dark rings under her eyes, having been sleepless due to feelings of loss, he jokingly asked if she hadn't slept well the previous night. She brushed off his question lightly, her heart heavy, yet accompanying him with a forced smile. Together, they headed to the Demon Race's front-line camp.
At that moment, Pei Yan could not have imagined it would be their last meeting in this lifetime. When next they met, Sifuer would have become a cold, lifeless corpse.
Failing to see the sorrow behind Sifuer's smile, or perhaps he had noticed but chose not to care, Pei Yan often regretted his insensitivity when recalling that day, hoping that if he had lingered a day or two longer and spoken more with her, tragedy might have been averted.
However, there is no remedy for regret. After observing the Disaster Legion's enemy formation, Pei Yan felt confident in breaking through alone and was eager to meet with the Demon God to enhance his strength, wasting no time on trivial matters. He bid a hasty farewell to Sifuer, who watched him go with a complex mix of hope and worry in her eyes as he plunged into the heart of the Disaster Legion.
"My Lord, Prince Silver Wing, is he going to break through the formation alone? That's too dangerous! The other side is a complete Disaster Legion camp, with at least three Deputy Commanders present!" Leohard was stunned, turning to report to Sifuer after seeing Pei Yan, who had observed the enemy formation and bid brief farewells, charging into the Disaster Legion's ranks.
"He can do it!" Sifuer declared with steely confidence as she reluctantly withdrew her gaze from Pei Yan's departing figure. She too had no time for personal affairs as many tasks awaited her. Renewed, she ordered, "Inform all legion commanders to launch a full-scale attack once Prince Silver Wing successfully breaks through. We will take advantage of his momentum to reclaim the route to the Holy City."
"As you command!"
Leohard was overjoyed at the command, bowed, and quickly turned to disseminate it. As messengers crisscrossed the camp to relay orders, the entire Demon Race camp sprang to life like a mountain tiger unleashed.
Now relying on Pei Yan's influence and the family's growth over the past five years, the army had effectively become Kataraga Autonomous Territory's private military, strictly following Sifuer's commands. This level of control was something the once-struggling Sifuer could never have imagined. Just like Pei Yan enjoyed the power, she too savored the joy that authority brought!
