Overpowered Resident Doctor-Chapter 178 - 177: Cannot Yield an Inch
"It's just a sprain. You didn't break any bones or tear any ligaments."
Yan Feifan put his sister's left foot down after examining it and couldn't help but gloat, "Sis, have you learned your lesson now?"
"I've told you before, don't just barge in when someone's in the shower."
The words had barely left his mouth before his sister grabbed him by the left ear.
"You little brat! How dare you laugh at me!"
"When you were in a coma, I had to give you a sponge bath almost every day. There isn't a single part of you I haven't seen!"
Yan Ziruo scoffed, "And that body of yours... nothing but a bag of bones, with legs like matchsticks. It gives me the creeps just looking at you."
Yan Feifan shook his head to free himself from his sister's grip and huffed, "That's how I used to be. I've gained all the weight back now."
"Mr. Yan, let me see then!" Tian Yu chimed in, leaning closer.
"Get lost!"
Yan Feifan shot her a glare and got back to business.
"Sis, a pipe burst in Su Ye's apartment, so she needs to stay with us for a bit. The thing is, after seeing the attic, she said she wants to rent it and live here long-term."
"Long-term?" Yan Ziruo and Tian Yu asked in unison.
Yan Feifan nodded. "She said the neighborhood is nice and quiet, and it's pretty convenient for getting to the hospital."
Tian Yu pouted. "Isn't her apartment even closer to the hospital? She can walk there in just a few minutes."
"She's definitely after something."
"Ruoruo, Mr. Yan, we can't rent it to her."
Yan Ziruo said with a grin, "Xiaoyu, if she is after something, isn't that even better? Your Mr. Yan isn't getting any younger. It's about time he found a girlfriend."
Tian Yu hesitated for a moment, then summoned her courage and declared, "Ruoruo, when I grow up, I'm going to marry Mr. Yan!"
Yan Feifan burst out laughing at that.
He reached out, patting the top of Tian Yu's head. "Silly girl, what are you thinking about? You're still just a kid."
"What you need to be doing is studying hard."
Yan Ziruo also reached out and pinched Tian Yu's cheek, chuckling. "By the time you finish high school and then college, seven or eight years will have passed."
"If you still like Mr. Yan by then, it won't be too late to marry him."
Tian Yu said anxiously, "By then, Mr. Yan and Su Ye's child will probably be old enough to run errands!"
Yan Ziruo chuckled. "Well, that would just mean you and Mr. Yan weren't meant to be. Besides, what if in seven or eight years, you don't want to marry him anymore? Wouldn't he be in a tough spot then?"
Tian Yu insisted, "I'll never change my mind."
Yan Ziruo sighed. "Countless newlyweds promise to love each other 'til the seas run dry and the rocks turn to dust, but there are still so many divorces every year."
"Xiaoyu, if it's meant to be, it will be."
"And if it's not, you can't force it. Let time be the judge..."
Watching the two of them—one big, one small—so earnestly discussing such a momentous topic, Yan Feifan was utterly speechless.
He said with a helpless look, "Sis, Xiaoyu, I'm the person you're talking about, and I'm standing right here."
"Is it really okay to talk about me like this?"
Then, with a serious expression, Yan Feifan said, "Sis, Su Ye just wants to rent our attic. Don't read too much into it."
"And Xiaoyu, I see you as my own little sister."
"Xiaoyu..."
Yan Feifan then warned, "If you don't do well on your high school entrance exams, you won't even qualify to be my sister anymore."
Tian Yu's face fell. "Mr. Yan," she said glumly, "I'll study hard. I won't disappoint you."
Just then, Yan Ziruo noticed the sound of the shower had stopped.
She looked toward the bathroom and said excitedly, "Whether her intentions are pure or not, we're renting it to her..."
"Oh, Feifan..."
Yan Ziruo remembered what she had meant to say earlier and spoke quickly, "I ran into Yin Yue while I was out shopping tonight."
"More importantly, she was with a man, and they were acting very intimate."
"Did she get a divorce?" Yan Feifan asked curiously.
Yan Ziruo shook her head. "No. If she were divorced, someone would have told me."
"Maybe it's because she's feeling resentful, or they have an open marriage and have started seeing other people?"
Yan Ziruo muttered to herself, 'A man can cheat, but he usually won't let his own wife do the same.'
'I think Yin Yue is playing with fire.'
'If she keeps this up, she could get seriously burned.'
Seeing her worried expression, Yan Feifan tried to reason with her. "Sis, she doesn't even consider you a friend anymore. Why are you wasting your time worrying about her?"
"Besides, it's not your place to get involved in something like this."
Yan Ziruo sighed. "You're right. I'm sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. Forget it, her business is none of my business."
Just then, the bathroom door slid open. Yu Suye walked out, her hair wrapped in a towel, wearing pajamas and trailing the fresh scent of soap and shampoo.
"Ruoruo, are you all right?"
Yan Ziruo smiled. "I'm fine. I just twisted my ankle unexpectedly. Feifan already checked it, and it's nothing serious."
After a brief pause, she asked, "Su Ye, you want to rent the attic and live here long-term?"
Yu Suye nodded. "There are too many people at my apartment building, and it gets noisy at night. It's not nearly as quiet as it is here in your neighborhood."
"Ruoruo, would that be all right with you?"
"Of course! It's more than all right!"
Yan Ziruo replied eagerly, adding, "As for the rent, you can just pay a token amount. A thousand a month will be fine."
Yu Suye looked embarrassed. "Ruoruo, I couldn't possibly. That's far too cheap!"
"I have a pretty good idea of the going rate for rent in this area."
Yan Ziruo came over, took Yu Suye's hand, and had her sit on the living room sofa with her. She smiled. "You're not a stranger. The attic is just sitting empty anyway. We really shouldn't charge you at all, but we were afraid you'd feel awkward living here for free."
"A thousand is perfect..."
Seeing the two of them chattering away, Yan Feifan went back to his room and returned to his book.
About ten minutes later, just as Yan Feifan was getting absorbed in his book, the sudden ringing of his phone pulled him out of his concentration.
He picked up his phone and saw it was a call from Ye Lin, one of the nurses.
He was a little surprised and also a bit nervous. He answered the call and immediately asked, "Did something happen to Qiqi?"
"Mr. Yan, Qiqi is fine."
"It's me... Something happened on my end..."
"What happened?" Yan Feifan asked, concerned.
"I'm on duty in the ward tonight, and I was setting up an IV drip for a patient. She's on the heavier side, so her veins are hard to find."
"I tried to place the IV three times and couldn't get it."
"She filed a complaint against me and said some really nasty things."
"The head nurse not only reprimanded me, but she also made me apologize to the patient and said she's going to dock my bonus..."
As she spoke, Ye Lin's voice on the phone began to crack with tears. "Mr. Yan, it's really not that my technique is bad."
"That patient's veins are just really, really hard to find..."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan's expression darkened.
Failing to place an IV was a common occurrence. He'd never heard of anyone having to apologize to a patient and get their bonus docked just for missing a few times.
Yan Feifan was familiar with Ye Lin's skills at placing IVs. She wasn't excellent, but she was definitely competent.
Yan Feifan asked, "Where's Meng Yao?"
"She's off tonight!"
Yan Feifan thought for a moment before saying clearly, "Ye Lin, go tell that head nurse that if she wants to dock your bonus, fine, but she needs to produce the center's official rules and regulations and follow procedure."
"As for apologizing to the patient, that's out of the question."
"If you have to apologize and lose your bonus every time you miss an IV, who would dare to even try to place one? Who would dare to do their job at all?"
Yan Feifan said with conviction, "This is exactly how a toxic medical environment is created—by giving in, one step at a time."
"You have to stand firm on matters of principle. Don't give an inch..."
