As soon as the door opened, Marcus Shaw was right there, looking tired with messy hair and wearing a loose white T-shirt.
"Sis?"
Hearing the sound, Marcus lifted his eyes in confusion, and upon seeing Nora Scott, he looked surprised.
"Has that annoying Lisa left?" Nora asked an unexpected question.
"Ah," thinking of Lisa, Marcus paused for half a second, then nodded, "Yeah."
Ernesto Scott never liked Lisa; she loved to gossip and had been caught several times by Ernesto. But considering her many years of service to the family, he had tolerated her.
Now, with the divorce from Alma Ferreira and Sophie and Marcus rarely home, coupled with some overstepping actions by Lisa, Ernesto finally let her go.
They have a new housekeeper now, someone honest, diligent, not very talkative, and quite nice to Marcus.
"Are you the only one at home?"
"Sis..." Marcus corrected himself, "Nora’s not back, and dad went with the police to ’visit’ Marshall Ferreira in the hospital."
Nora asked, "Isn’t Sophie on vacation?"
Marcus lifted his eyelids and said calmly, "She said she rented a place to stay outside, for peace. Dad doesn’t listen, so it’s up to her."
On weekdays at school, weekends at Cloudwater Haven, Marcus doesn’t see much of Sophie now, and their last WeChat contact was over a month ago.
"Alright," Nora raised her hand, lightly bumping his forehead, and said with a smile, "Go change your clothes and come with me."
Marcus tilted his head back slightly dumbfounded, "Where to?"
"Where else?" Nora retorted, pulling out a set of car keys and playing with them, with a slight raise of her brow, "School."
"..."
Marcus’s eyes widened slightly.
Nora said, "Marcus Shaw has been waiting for you for a long time. You guys are researching something I don’t understand and can’t help with. Are you sure you want him to handle the competition solo in a couple of days?"
"Right away."
Marcus, previously a bit downcast, hesitated for a moment and then suddenly perked up a bit.
After saying a word to Nora, he went back to his room to pack up.
Before long, the fresh and upright school heartthrob was following his own Fairy sister, both getting into a car, and they drove off.
*
Once school ended, the place was no longer bustling but rather quiet and desolate. The midsummer wind was scorching, at the hottest time, with heat waves rolling and the sound of cicadas and birds adding color to the summer from every corner tirelessly.
In the laboratory, Nora sat on a chair with the air conditioning blowing, legs crossed, holding a bottle of iced drink, casually sipping. Occasionally her gaze would drift outside, seeing the leaves withered in the bright sunlight, without any vitality.
Not far away, Marcus Shaw and Marcus were repeatedly adjusting the data. The young people were energetic, sweating profusely even in the air-conditioned room, occasionally tugging their collars for some cool air, wiping sweat with the back of their hands, and their foreheads were all wet. They dared not lower the temperature for fear that the immobile Nora might catch a cold.
The phone vibrated.
[Henry Chapman]: Come over, gain some experience.
[Nora]: No.
[Henry Chapman]: ?
[Nora]: Hot.
Henry stopped bothering her.
Since it’s already vacation, "Reversing Life" started smoothly. Along with them, another crew next door, "Summer," was shooting a day or two before them.
The early shooting of "Reversing Life" involved the first female and male leads, and Nora’s scenes were scheduled a few days later, naturally delaying her joining the crew.
She had just told Henry that she’d be at school and probably come back late, and asked if he wanted her to bring dinner. Henry responded only after finding out about her lack of ambition, he gave up directly.
Soon after, her phone started buzzing again.
Glancing at the name, Nora took her phone and stepped to the window before answering the call.
"Nora, did you take Marcus?" Ernesto Woods asked immediately.
"Yeah. At school."
Nora did not interact much with Ernesto, but the initial antagonism had unconsciously faded quite a bit, and they could now talk calmly.
"Oh, that’s good." Ernesto sighed in relief.
After a slight pause, Nora looked back and caught Marcus stopping, eyes lightly lifted, his deep black eyes tentatively sweeping in her direction.
Nora raised a brow, and under his watchful eye, she calmly turned and headed towards the door. As she pulled the door open and stepped into the heat, she scrunched up her face and her figure disappeared from their view.
Marcus: "..." Sis, you’re too obvious.
Leaving the air-conditioned comfort, Nora felt the summer afternoon heat wrapping around her, and her skin soon started to sweat. She frowned slightly and leaned against a wall after not walking far.
She asked, "What’s the situation with the investigation?"
"Marshall Ferreira couldn’t give a clear account, only mentioned that he vaguely heard Marcus’s name when he was hit. The police checked and found no evidence pointing to Marcus, if they can’t catch the real culprit, this case might just be left unresolved."
"But the gap between the Ferreira Family and him is getting wider."
"...This kid is really scheming."
Ernesto sighed lightly.
It was clear that Alma Ferreira didn’t want the police to convict Marcus, but she couldn’t swallow her anger and used it as an opportunity to scapegoat Marcus, further straining Marcus’s relationship with the Ferreira Family.
Due to Ernesto’s divorce from Alma, and Marcus’s career choice which didn’t satisfy the Ferreira Family, Marcus already had a rift with them. Now, with Marshall’s actions, even though the police found no evidence, suspicion was planted within the Ferreira Family. Going forward, Marcus’s relationship with them would likely be even more contentious.
Nora narrowed her eyes, her voice chilly, "Needs a lesson."
Ernesto, on the other end of the phone, inexplicably shuddered in the blazing sunlight.
...
After hanging up, Nora didn’t turn back into the lab. She lowered her eyes, edited a message for Benjamin Durant, and then slipped her phone into her pocket, standing up straight.
Outside the lab was a playground, the scorching sun heating up the ground significantly, making film crews avoid outdoor shooting at this time.
Nora’s eyes unintentionally swept over and noticed a slender petite figure. She paused, took a few steps forward, rested her hand on the railing, lowered her lids, and looked down.
A little girl, without an umbrella, wearing long sleeves and trousers, had thin arms and legs, tied in a ponytail, carrying a backpack on her shoulder, and was conspicuous walking in the empty outdoor basketball court.
She stopped, raising her beautifully slender hand to shade her eyes, looked left and right, then tilted her head, unexpectedly meeting Nora’s gaze. Neither avoided the eye contact.
The little girl’s pale, small face showed; she was a pretty little girl.
After a few seconds, the little girl arched her brows and eyes, smiling softly and playfully at her under the bright sunlight.
She lowered her head, lifted her steps, and headed towards this building. She soon crossed the basketball court, perhaps finding it too hot and sunny, and walked in the shade of the trees, only occasionally glimpsed due to the lush leaves.
Nora didn’t move; both hands rested on the railing, fiddling with her phone, occasionally looking at the girl walking, and occasionally glancing at the distant playground.
Having stayed here for a year, time had dulled any memories, and nothing stood out as impressive. The only serious year of study, filled only with exams and papers, was a bit regrettable.
As her thoughts drifted, Nora refocused a bit, glanced down, and found the little girl had disappeared.
—Probably went into the building.
Too hot, Nora was about to go back into the lab.
Just then, the lab door opened, and Marcus Shaw, head down looking at his phone, walked out.
