Chapter 68: A Dragon’s Choice

Ka’Lula crashes onto the misty mountaintop with a thunderous whump, her wings flapping wildly before folding neatly against her back. Dust and clouds swirl around her as she lands with Pip clinging to her neck, eyes wide and systems whirring in panicked glee.

With a gentle hop, she shifts back into her human form, dropping to her knees and catching her breath. Her bronze skin glistening with sweat, and steam curling from her horns and shoulders like breath off molten stone. Pip rolled onto the ground beside her, landing with a thud, dazed but intact.

They lay in silence for a few long seconds, the wind whistling around them, carrying the scent of pine, stone, and fire.

Then, Ka’Lula giggles.

"Sorry about that," she breathlessly, her voice tinged with embarrassment and wonder. "I... I turned into a dragon again." She looks at Pip, her amber eyes wide and shimmering. "But this time felt... different."

She grins, flushed and glowing. "I didn’t lose control. I didn’t feel ashamed. I... I felt amazing. Like... like my body just exploded with bliss and wanted to be a dragon." She laughs again, covering her face with both hands. "You made me feel that good, Pip."

Pip lets out a long, affectionate beep and beams a warm pulse of pride and contentment directly into her thoughts. Ka’Lula melts under the emotion, eyes fluttering. "You’re proud of me?" she whispers.

He nods, his metallic hand gently brushing her cheek. She smiles sweetly, then leans in.

Moments later, their bodies tangle under the moonlight, she takes him to the sky again, this time not as a dragon, but as a woman filled with newfound strength, confidence, and clarity. She soars to euphoric heights, over and over, until the mountain echoes with her cries of release.

Hours pass.

Eventually, Ka’Lula lay sprawled across the cool stone, arms splayed, chest rising and falling in soft, satisfied heaves. A stupid grin stretched across her face.

She stares at the stars, then promptly begins to snore.

Pip sits up, stretching his arms, his frame softly glowing from residual warmth and magical discharge. He looks around the mountaintop, scanning the horizon.

Then he sees it.

A massive hole nestled in the craggy cliff face. Curious, he wanders toward it and peers down.

The tunnel leads to a vast underground cavern. With a zoom of his ocular sensors, he locks onto a glimmering cache of treasure, mounds of gold, ancient weapons, scattered gemstones, and silver artifacts glittering in the depths.

He lets out a delighted "Beep!" that echoes down into the tunnel, then turns and waves at Ka’Lula.

She groggily sits up, wobbling slightly from the aftershocks still dancing in her legs. "What is it?" she mumbles, then crawls over and peeks down the tunnel with him.

"Oh, that?" she says, yawning. "Yeah. That’s where I woke up the first time I turned into a dragon. It’s filled with treasure. Dunno how it got there." She blinks. "I was kind of... fuzzy when I woke up."

--------------

Back in the village...

The inn’s doors slammed open as Veena, Vuvi, Sera, and Penelo burst into the chieftess’ home.

"She’s taken Pip!" Vuvi shouts.

The old chieftess blinks. "Who’s taken Pip?"

"The dragon!" they all shouted.

Realization dawned across the old woman’s face. She leaps to her feet faster than her age should’ve allow, marches to her porch, and screams out into the village, "Get me a man!"

A sleepy, confused man peeks out from a nearby house, scratching his belly.

"You!" she barks. "Horses. Now!"

He groans. "But it’s late..."

The chieftess lifts her sandal.

He disappears with a squeak.

Minutes later, the group stands at the edge of the village. Four horses stamp impatiently, reins in hand. Veena and Sera were already mounting up while Penelo nervously tapped her foot.

"I... I don’t know how to ride," she admits.

"Me either," Vuvi mutters.

"Then hold on," Veena said with a smirk.

"Tight." Sera adds a wink.

They galloped across the rolling fields, the setting sun casting long golden streaks across the horizon. In the distance, the western mountains loomed, silent and massive.

Then... a shadow.

All four riders look up as a great form soared above them. Massive wings beat the air, sending gusts into the grasslands. The dragon dips low and crashes into a meadow ahead with a boom, dirt flying.

They slowed their horses, eyes wide as the dragon unfurled its wings and shook dust from its body.

Then the dragon smiled.

"It’s okay!" Ka’Lula called out in a booming voice. "I don’t feel weird anymore! I can control it now!"

Vuvi’s jaw drops. "You can talk in that form?!"

Ka’Lula nods, still grinning.

Vuvi stomps up to her. "That’s great! Fantastic! Wonderful! Now give me my Pip back!"

From above, Pip let out a proud beep as he stood on Ka’Lula’s back, draped in gold chains and sparkling gems like some divine idol.

He leaps down, landing with a metallic crunch beside Vuvi. Jewels scattering in every direction.

Vuvi catches him in a hug, scowling and weeping. "You reckless, wonderful piece of junk. Don’t you ever do that again."

"And... "Ka’Lula says. "I can fly without destroying everything! Watch!"

She flapped once, took off in a slow circle, then landed softly again. Then, with a shimmer, she shrank down, reappearing as her usual self.

"See?" she said, brushing ash from her clothes.

Ka’Lula steps beside them, rubbing the back of her neck. "Sorry. I didn’t mean to steal him... but I wanted to say thank you. He really did help me."

She snaps her fingers. "Here." She points to the treasure still tumbling from her arms. "Payment."

The group blinks.

"After... our time together," she blushes, "the weirdness just... vanished. I feel clear. In control. Stronger. Watch!"

She flexed her arms, and her wings explode outward in a flash of golden light. This time, they were perfectly formed, elegant, and massive.

Penelo’s mouth falls open. "Pip did that?"

Ka’Lula nods.

Sera looks between her and Pip, clearly impressed. "We need to start keeping records," she muttered.

"We’re keeping scores," Vuvi chuckles, then pulls Pip aside and hugs him again.

The sun dips below the mountain as the group returns to the village.

The towns people have gathered near the entrance. When they see the approaching figures, one cries out. "She’s back!"

Another shouts, "And she brought Pip with her!"

The crowd erupts into cheers.

Ka’Lula steps forward and addresses them all. "Thank you. For putting up with me. I’ve been... going through changes, but I’m okay now. I promise."

She turns to Pip. "Because of him."

Pip beeps humbly.

Then she transforms again, her massive dragon form rising into the sky. With a flap of her wings, she soars over the village, letting out a melodic roar.

She lands beside the team once more, shifting back to human form and grinning ear to ear. Then she tackles Pip, nearly bowling him over.

"I want to stay with you!" she cries out. "If... if that’s okay. Can I stay with you? I want to help you save the world!"

The entire team stares in stunned silence.

Then Pip gives a cheerful beep and lifts her off the ground in a spinning hug.

Ka’Lula squeals with joy, wrapping her arms around his neck.

Penelo gasps.

Veena sighs.

Vuvi drags her hand down her face.

"Another one..."
