Chapter 201 - Massacre

"Solrock, use Sandstorm! "

"Lunatone, use Moonblast!"

As soon as the battle began, Liza and Tate wasted no time seizing the initiative.

John narrowed his eyes. This was going to be brutal.

Solrock and Lunatone were LV68—eight levels higher than his Tyranitar and Greninja, both at LV60. But John had prepared extensively. He had rotated his strongest Pokemon before leveling up Venusaur, ensuring that Greninja and Tyranitar gained crucial battle experience.

And he wasn't about to wait for their attacks to land.

"Greninja, Surf ! Tyranitar, Hyper Beam!"

Solrock ascended rapidly, spinning as it climbed. A fierce yellow sandstorm surged outward, gaining momentum with its rotation, threatening to blanket the battlefield in a raging storm.

Liza's strategy was clear—since John refused to let Tyranitar trigger Sandstorm, they would do it themselves.

Except... the swirling sand never fully formed. It collapsed mid-air, as if the storm had suddenly lost its will to fight.

"Sandstorm... ineffective?" Liza muttered in shock.

"It's Tyranitar," Tate realized. "It's controlling the battlefield's weather. Your Sandstorm was forcefully shut down!"

John folded his arms, smirking.

How many times must I say it? Don't change the weather in front of my Tyranitar. Even his favorite Sandstorm won't appear without his permission!

With Solrock's opening move neutralized, Lunatone rushed forward to regain control.

The crescent-shaped Pokemon shimmered with a soft, ethereal glow, gathering a dense cluster of pink light in midair. A barrage of energy rained down like shooting stars, aimed directly at Tyranitar.

Fairy-type moves dealt double damage against Dark-types. Liza and Tate weren't without counters to Tyranitar.

But before Moonblast could land, a massive wave surged up between the two sides—a deep blue tidal wall, rising like a sea monster breaking the surface.

Greninja's Surf.

John had positioned Surf in front of both Tyranitar and Greninja, ensuring his team remained untouched.

The immense wave swallowed Moonblast whole, consuming the attack like a bottomless abyss. And it wasn't finished yet. The sea monster roared forward, seeking to engulf both Solrock and Lunatone!

Lunatone's Special Attack stat was simply too low. Even with an eight-level difference, Greninja's overwhelming power turned this into a slaughter.

"Solrock, use Light Screen!" Tate shouted.

A brilliant flash of sunlight erupted from Solrock, forming a psychic barrier—a lavender-hued wall that expanded before both Pokemon, standing firm against the oncoming Surf.

The combination of Moonblast and Light Screen managed to soften the attack, causing Liza and Tate to exhale in relief.

Both Solrock and Lunatone had a Rock typing. A super-effective Water move could be devastating, especially to Solrock, whose Special Defense was mediocre at best. If Surf had landed at full power, it might have been a one-hit knockout.

John chuckled.

Too soon to relax.

Greninja's attack had been blocked.

But what about Tyranitar's?

A blinding white beam of destructive energy ripped across the battlefield. The sheer force of Hyper Beam tore through the dissipating Surf, shattering Light Screen, and continued its devastating path forward.

Lunatone was the first to be hit—there was no escape.

With Moonblast in its arsenal, Lunatone was naturally the top priority.

"BOOM!"

Lunatone slammed into the gym's back wall. The reinforced structure held firm, but the Rock/Psychic-type was driven deeper into the surface with each impact, its body blackened from the attack.

When the light finally faded, Lunatone was embedded in the wall, smoke rising from its form. Its eyes swirled in defeat.

"Lunatone is unable to battle!" the referee declared.

But the fight wasn't over yet.

At least, not officially.

The moment Light Screen shattered, a spinning shuriken of pure energy pierced through it.

Greninja had already moved.

Before Solrock could react, the ninja Pokemon appeared right in front of it, gripping a blade formed of pure darkness in its right hand.

"Night Slash!"

A black arc flashed through the air.

Greninja landed smoothly, turning its back to Solrock as it gracefully sheathed the dark blade.

A thin, jagged slash appeared across Solrock's form.

Crack.

Solrock collapsed to the ground, completely out of commission.

Psychic-type moves had no effect on Dark-types.

But Dark-type moves dealt double damage to Psychic Pokemon.

"Solrock is unable to battle! Mossdeep Gym Leaders Liza and Tate have no remaining Pokemon!" the referee announced. "The winner is John!"

The world around him faded.

Back in the real world, the post-battle screen appeared on his Gameboy.
