728: Getting Through

Kitsara’s mouth had slowly fallen open, jaw slack with disbelief.

Blossom looked like she was about to clap at my amazing performance. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Vex was visibly fighting back the urge to break out into hearty laughter.

Iris was dying from sheer cringe.

But Raika?

Raika… was thinking.

She stared at me, blinking once.

Then again.

The water trickled down her temple as her twitching stopped.

Her jaw unclenched.

“…Big battle later… many ugly cat die… more glory… hard challenge…” she muttered slowly, the words rolling around her head like puzzle pieces snapping into place.

Then she nodded.

Seriously.

“Yes… I rest now.

Save strength.

Get big victory later.”

Vex’s soul visibly left her body.

I gave a slow nod of approval.

“Smart thinking.”

“Good talk,” she said with a small nod in my direction before slumping back into the bath with a satisfied smile.

Silence returned for a beat.

Then, Kitsara burst out laughing, so much so that her three tails flopped over the water on repeat.

Vex buried her face in her hands.

“I can’t believe that worked… What will Lady Black Fang think when I tell her this…?”

Blossom threw both arms in the air, squealing cheerily.

“Just like Ghosty, Miss Raika’s saving energy for the mega smash battle where Ghosty’s family will be rescued!!”

How extremely adorable.

Outside the steamy tranquility of the bath, the chaos of war painted a very different picture.

Sunscar was being ripped apart.

From our elevated vantage, we could see the outermost wall already breached in several places.

When the bearkin waves crashed into the enemy fortifications, the walls didn’t just shake; they buckled.

Stone cracked, beams snapped, and lionkin defenders were sent flying like toys.

At the center of it all was Gorruk.

The bearkin warlord led the charge personally, his colossal frame easily visible as he swung his claws that were large enough to cleave trees in half.

He wasn’t fighting like a commander but a true one-man army.

Every swing of his tore through multiple enemies, and his roar alone was enough to break morale.

The lionkin tried to form ranks, but it was like asking sticks to hold back a flood.

Despite the lionkin being outfitted in armor and wielding good weapons—unlike the other proud apexes like the bearkin, tigerkin, and wolfkin—the numbers and might of the besiegers was just too much to resist.

On the far flank, the dogkin were practically dancing over the walls, their nimble forms leaping and flipping from ledges to parapets.

Where the bearkin shattered with brute force, the dogkin sliced and flanked with precision.

It was… a massacre.

A beautifully coordinated, terrifyingly efficient massacre.

Back in the bath, Blossom’s cheer contrasted starkly with the horror unfolding below.

“Grrr… Lionkin cowards… They hurt Vex’s family…!” Raika muttered, eyes still locked on the battlefield, though she was holding her position like a good girl.

Would you look at that?

I didn’t know her extreme animosity toward the lions stemmed from her feelings toward her big sis.

Their relationship was more complex than I gave it credit.

Vex’s soft purring buzzed against my ears all of a sudden.

It was a sound that was equal parts seductive and mischievous.

She still clung to my back, arms loosely wrapped around my chest, chin resting on my shoulder.

I could feel every curve of her body, particularly the twin peaks pressing snugly against me with no sense of shame.

“So, Mister Devil, care to educate me on how your little harem of misfits suddenly turned into little monsters overnight?”

I smiled wryly.

Here it comes.

I knew it was only a matter of time.

“Ghosty turned from an assassin girl into some kind of shadow-warping, teleporting murder machine,” she murmured.

“Kitsara’s grown two tails in two days, Blade’s more of a sword menace than a samurai, Solace is out-damaging most dedicated damage dealers while healing better than ever before, and Miss Wrath… is no longer just absorbing pain like a sponge, but she now deals with the suffering of her allies as well, and more…”

She paused, lips grazing my ear as she whispered, “Shall I go on?”

“I’m not in his harem and never will be,” Iris interjected, though no one took her seriously.

“You know, I can’t help but recognize that you call my extremely sexy and rather unhinged battle partner a miss, yet I’m only ever a mister if you’re trying to call me out on my bullshit, among other things… You do know we’re both Vesper Phenoms, right?

What’s more is that I’m under your master while she’s sponsored by Maelstrom, Lady Black Fang’s rival.

In fact, you should be trying to eliminate her.”

Iris’s extremely unimpressed eyes met mine, telling me she was one word away from strangling me in my own bath.

However, to my greatest dismay, Vex wasn’t letting me change the topic so easily.

“Nope…” was the only thing she purred into my other ear this time around, sounding rather playful.

I said nothing, which in turn made Vex’s playful hum turn into a cute scoff.

“I see.

So, silence is your confession.” Her fingers curled lightly against my chest, and then—press—her breasts flattened more firmly against my back, soft warmth grinding in slow, coaxing motions.

“Tell me…~”

“Tell me…~” she crooned, drawing out the words like a slow spell meant to melt me.

“Tell me…~”

A violent shudder traversed along my body, from the top of my spine to my feet.

Her sensual skin was melting my brain into a gooey liquid.

But!

I knew when I had to stay firm.

As such, I took a deep breath and collected all my willpower.

I looked back over my shoulder, meeting her gaze with a wry smile.

“Even if I told you, it would be of no use.”

Her brow furrowed, and to my greatest dismay, her grinding chest motions paused.

“What do you mean?”

“This method only works…” I gave her a deliberately drawn-out pause, “on those younger than a hundred.”

The silence that followed was outright deadly.

Her expression immediately darkened.

Her grip on my chest tightened like a vice, nails pressing into my skin.

Her eyes narrowed into a fiery slit of pure offense.

“I beg your pardon?” she hissed, her voice suddenly much lower.

I blinked innocently.

“Just stating facts.”

“You’re telling me,” she said slowly, “that your growth boost wouldn’t work on me because I’m too old?”

I stayed quiet.

She already knew the answer.

Then came the sharp, suspicious question.

“What about Solace?

She must be over a hundred years of age.

And what about her mother?

That woman, Moon?

Solace called her mom.”

God damn, she was an observant one.

Naturally, I was just bullshitting.

Despite my high trust of Vex and her allies, it didn’t extend to the length of inviting them into my home and to meet my absolute goldmine of a daughter.

Who knew how they would react?

As such, I exhaled, keeping my voice calm.

“Elves are counted differently.”

Her eye twitched.

“If we translated Solace’s age to human terms, she’d be around eighteen.”

“And Moon?” Vex asked with narrowed eyes full of suspicion.

“First of all, you don’t know if she got upgraded as well or she already had these powers, so don’t try to fish for such information.

Second, I would guess her elven years to be the equivalent of about thirty in human terms.”

Vex went still.

Utterly still.

For a long second, I thought she might snap my spine.

Then, in a chillingly quiet tone, she muttered under her breath, “All of a sudden, I no longer find myself liking elves as much as I did before…”

We spent the rest of the siege of Sunscar chatting merrily, but soon, it came time to get ready.

The finale of our Beastman Confederation escapade is upon us!
