Chapter 124: Under Cover

"Mommy, was I awesome today?"

Eric ran out, practically begging for praise.

Sophia let out a soft chuckle. "Yes, yes, you were amazing."

Her lips curved slightly as she turned to leave, but Paul called again.

"President Morgan, the young master of RS Group wants to meet you."

"RS Group?"

Sophia froze for a moment.

RS Group was a world-famous jewelry corporation, with its business spread across the globe. Most importantly, the person behind it was extremely mysterious.

As for the young master of RS Group, she had never even heard of him.

Showing up at Morgan Group out of nowhere and asking to see her felt... suspicious.

"I’ll be right there."

She headed straight to Morgan Group.

Inside the office, the man’s back looked oddly familiar.

Sophia frowned slightly, and when he turned around, she froze. "You!"

Damien curved his lips, stood, and offered his hand. "Miss Morgan, we meet again."

"Damien, didn’t you say you were just..."

"I apologize. I did tell a little lie before, but it was a harmless one. Let’s reintroduce ourselves properly. Miss Morgan, hello. I am Damien, CEO of RS Group."

Sophia was genuinely surprised.

"Damien, what are you trying to do?"

"I didn’t come here to cooperate with Morgan Group. I simply wanted to see you. Seems you’re doing well. Lucas really was a good choice."

Sophia’s brows tightened. There was more to his words than the polite surface.

"Lucas ordered a complete diamond jewelry set from me. Worth over a hundred million. He’s one of my top clients now."

Sophia wanted to cut straight to the point, but Damien beat her to it.

"I’m just here to give you a little gift."

He placed a box in front of her.

Sophia opened it. Inside was a crystal bracelet.

"Take a closer look. See if it suits you."

Damien stood straight and did not linger.

Sophia sat down, puzzled. Something about his words felt off.

And besides...

"Take a closer look"?

The crystals were bright, shimmering like... eyes.

Suddenly, she heard crying outside.

Her heart sank. The kids.

Faye was crying miserably, a snot bubble even forming.

Paul stood beside her, looking like he had a headache.

"What happened? Faye, why are you crying?"

"Mommy!"

Faye threw herself into Sophia’s arms, sobbing.

"What’s wrong, hmm?"

Angela glared at Paul. "Mommy, he scared my little sister."

"Secretary Smith?"

"M-Miss Morgan, it was an accident." Paul’s face twitched awkwardly.

He had simply been standing at the doorway when Faye suddenly bumped into him and burst into tears without saying a word.

Sophia glanced at the little girl, snot and tears everywhere, crying like her heart had shattered. Understanding flashed across her eyes. She scooped Faye up and headed straight for the restroom.

The moment the door closed behind them, Sophia whispered, "No one’s here. Drop the act."

Faye, who seconds ago had been sobbing like the world ended, instantly stopped. Her eyes brightened and she grinned.

"Mommy, that bad uncle was eavesdropping outside. I had to warn you. Plus, big sister and brothers helped me too!"

Sophia had already guessed as much. She gently ruffled Faye’s little head like a reward.

"Damien gave me a box earlier. Said it was a ’small gift’. I looked and didn’t see anything unusual."

Only then did Sophia remember the bracelet he had given her. With the restroom empty, she took it out for a closer look.

"Mommy, back then, my brothers and sisters and I all felt Uncle Damien didn’t really like you. Turns out he had another motive. Since he gave you something, he must be trying to send you a message. Otherwise he could’ve just told you in his office."

Faye might be little, but her logic was razor-sharp.

"I don’t know yet. But thank you for the warning, Faye. Remember this—inside this company, trust no one. Understand?"

"Don’t worry, Mommy. Faye isn’t dumb!"

"Good girl."

After a moment, Sophia carried her back out.

"President Morgan." Paul walked up immediately.

"Come with me."

Paul frowned. "President Morgan, that was really just an accident."

"Accident or not, my child cried. Because of you. Do you not think you owe me a reasonable explanation?"

"President Morgan, I have no idea why she cried, but I swear I didn’t do anything to upset her."

"For your sake, I hope that is true."

Seeing Sophia did not immediately reprimand him, Paul took a cautious step forward and tried asking, "The person behind RS Group has always been mysterious... President Morgan, do you... know him personally?"

"Secretary Smith, since when do you think you have the right to question my private life?"

"...I wouldn’t dare."

"You’ve worked at Morgan Group for seven, eight years now, haven’t you?"

Paul blinked, confused at her sudden shift. "A full eight years."

"Eight years... and have you bought a place downtown yet?"

Downtown property started in the tens of millions.

Paul gave a bitter, helpless smile. "Of course not. My salary isn’t enough for that."

"You said it yourself. Eight years at Morgan Group, yet you still can’t afford a home? Seems my father has been underpaying you. After all, you’re the one who has stayed by his side the longest."

Paul’s smile faded. His tone grew solemn. "President Morgan has given me everything I have today. I am grateful for his trust."

"Grateful for his trust? Everything you have now came from your own effort. If you didn’t work this hard, forget ’trust’, you wouldn’t even have the opportunity."

Sophia intentionally raised her voice just enough for others nearby to hear. Paul had been Andrew’s right-hand man for eight years. If he were truly valued, a million-dollar annual salary would not be out of reach.

The reality told another story.

"I can guarantee one thing," she thought coldly, "I’m not poaching him. My father simply doesn’t know how to keep real talent."

"Secretary Smith," she said softly, almost like a whisper of temptation, "With your ability, you could easily earn far more than what you do now. Are you really content earning such a modest salary just to stay by my father’s side?"

A warning instinct flickered in Paul’s mind. Something felt off.

Sophia was laying a trap.

"President Morgan values me greatly. I will dedicate everything to Morgan Group."

"All for a living, isn’t it?" Her voice turned silky, almost dangerous. "Have you never thought about reaching for something better? Because sometimes... if you dare to reach out, certain things can fall right into your hands."

"President Morgan has already given me enough."

Sophia’s lips curved, her tone light yet razor-sharp. "Secretary Smith, never make absolute statements. Life rarely lets us control everything. One day, you might have to answer for your own words. And as for ’changing your mind’? It is far more common than you think."

"Miss Morgan, please rest assured. Since President Morgan has temporarily entrusted the company to you, I will stay by your side and assist you properly."

"Secretary Smith, you and I both know the truth. Are you here to help me, or did my father send you to keep watch? He is seriously injured because he protected me. Do not worry. I will manage Morgan Group for him. Every lost partnership... I will take back."

Paul nodded. "Miss Morgan, since you said so, I believe you will do exactly that. Under your leadership, perhaps the company may even thrive."

In truth, Paul still feared Andrew.

With cameras watching, he did not dare get too close to her. His loyalty still fell to Andrew. After all, Andrew did build Morgan Group, and a company that had survived this long was no fluke. Their name still carried weight, even if they had been declining in recent years.

And that decline?

If one looked closely, every step downward had begun the moment she decided it should.

"From now on, call me President Morgan. I do not like being addressed as Miss Morgan."

Sophia reminded him calmly, then waved her hand dismissively. "I have things to do. You can go. Keep an eye on the six kids outside."

"Yes, President Morgan."

Bringing Paul in had been nothing but a psychological seed. Every word, every shift in tone, all planting roots in his subconscious.

The truth was, Andrew really had been treating his people poorly. Never raising salaries, never giving them real future prospects. With no future in sight, who would truly give their life for him?

Sophia arched a brow, lowered her head, and pulled out the stack of documents she had organized yesterday. She reviewed them again, expression focused and serious.

Meanwhile, in front of another screen—

Andrew frowned.

Beside him, Susan let out a mocking laugh. "Told you she isn’t easy to deal with. Look, she’s only been at the company a few days and she’s already trying to snatch Paul from you."

"Enough. Can’t you talk less? Paul isn’t someone she can steal away. He’s my man."

"Andrew, you shouldn’t trust him too blindly. People change. He’s only your secretary who happened to stay long. If he ever grows ambitious and turns on you, you won’t even be able to stand back up."

Her words were harsh, but not wrong. Paul was vital to Andrew. If Paul ever betrayed him, the blow would be fatal.

"You’re overthinking. People I wouldn’t vouch for, sure. But Paul? He’s loyal to the bone. He’s been with me eight years. You saw it yourself—Sophia tried to lure him, and he didn’t even flinch."

"Don’t forget, Paul is the one who placed everything in there. He knew the box had something meant to monitor him. That’s why he didn’t dare show even the slightest reaction."

"And another thing, I don’t buy that Sophia genuinely wants to help. You better stay alert. If she decides to trip you up, you might not get back on your feet."

"Hmph. If Sophia really can run the company well, she’s still my daughter. What’s wrong with letting her take over then?"

Andrew snapped back, irritated by Susan’s nagging. His tone sounded righteous, but it was nothing more than stubborn pride.

In truth, he did not think that way at all. In his heart, Olivia was the real daughter he favored. Sophia? Arrogant, rebellious, and completely indifferent to him as a father.

"Andrew, don’t you dare! If you really try that— I’ll fight you to the end! I may have never given you a son, but Olivia is my flesh and blood! I will never let anyone take away what belongs to her. And I will absolutely never allow anyone to hurt her!"

As a mother, Susan was viciously protective.

"You are being completely unreasonable!"

"Unreasonable? Andrew, do not forget I still have my godfather. If you ever push me too far, I can have him step in. Morgan Group? He could hand it over to me like it’s nothing. We wouldn’t even care about taking it!"

This was not the first time she had brought up her godfather.

Andrew’s face changed slightly. Clearly, the name carried weight he feared.

"At least you still remember what he represents. If it hadn’t been for that sudden cash-flow issue back then— such a tiny sum— my godfather has more than enough. I simply refused to owe him favors. Andrew, remember this: I do not need you. The fact that I am still here is already giving you face. So from now on, think before you speak. If you run your mouth again, don’t blame me for forgetting our so-called past."

Susan twisted her wide hips and stormed out.

Andrew’s brow locked tight, a curse slipping past his teeth.

How could he forget she still had that godfather?
