Raising Ducks for Daily Rewards-Chapter 13: Spell Collection
"Hey big brother, you ordered feed again?"
"Little Ling, thank you for helping me! Indeed, I need a lot of feed nowadays. I hope you can keep this quiet and not tell others."
"Don’t worry brother, Ming-ge always says that we have to keep our customer’s satisfied and not reveal their secrets at an cost, else we lose our credibility!"
"Well little Ming is also right, you need to do this indeed.
Say, where is he now? Isn’t he supposed to deliver the feed with you?"
Just as Fengyu was talking with Ling’er, he saw a small figure coming from afar.
It was Ming-ge running over to them, panting slightly when he halted.
"Ling’er! Didn’t I tell you not to deliver it on your own!"
"And I told you that I didn’t want to bother you!" Ling’er pouted and argued.
Ming-ge and Ling’er suddenly entered and argument, where Ling’er felt like she was being commanded around by him, while Ming-ge felt like she wouldn’t listen to him no matter what he says.
Seeing that the argument had no room to stop, Fengyu put his hand between them, attracting their attention.
"You two are siblings, why argue so much?
Ling, your brother is right. Why do you not listen to him? Ming, your sister is just as old as you are, why don’t you listen to her too? Doing everything together is indeed strenuous and wastes a lot of time. Try to split your work so that the one who’s better at something does the job.
And Ming, to be honest, your sister does indeed have a better business acumen than you.
On the other hand, I’m sure you’re also very good at planting and taking care of your field, better than your sister."
Ming and Ling listened. They were young and easily influenced by an older person, so they stopped to think about what he said.
"Brother, you’re really a lot better than me in spiritual planting. Whenever I try the spells, I can only do the Small Rain Cloud Spell, the other spells I’m bad at."
"Well, I am indeed better at it... but-"
"No, no, little Ming, you have to be honest. You can’t protect your sister like that. We’re in this village anyways, isn’t it rather safe here?"
When Ming heard this, he was confused and turned to him.
"Big brother, don’t you know?
There are frequent attacks by beasts on our fields. Especially our fields that are positioned to the outside, having only a weak protective formation."
"What?!" Fengyu was astonished, looking at the formation, then further out the field to the other side.
Indeed, he was very close to the entrance and it seemed like outside, there were quite a few beasts...
"But this place is peaceful, isn’t it?" Fengyu asked again, unsure.
This time it was Ling that answered, "Brother, we’re indeed cultivating very peacefully, but every year, there are a few cases of beasts entering, and every few years, a small beast wave attacks our village.
Although, every time, the beasts are at most at the peak of the first stage..."
"Every time?" Fengyu interrupted and asked.
"Yes, every time!" Ming and Ling nodded. They had been here in this village since they were born, and in the last wave... both looked sad when they thought of it.
’Then, isn’t this a stable environment? At least I know the danger. In addition, if it’s still peaceful under these circumstances... then maybe, this is actually controlled?
If it’s just as they say and the beast clans have connections with the city, then it’s indeed possible that they occasionally send waves of beasts to attack...
But what’s their goal in doing so?’ Fengyu could guess a few things, not believing in the good in people but knowing the bad of people.
Still, while he could guess a bit, he couldn’t understand the other part.
They stably created resources for the peak, didn’t they...?
"Anyways, you two, don’t distract me!
Talk it out, maybe Ling does the rain spell in the morning and leaves to take care of business afterward, maybe Ming takes care of the field the whole day... as long as you can find a middle-ground, you will find that everything becomes easier."
He then sent them away, returning to his own field.
Inside, he saw Zimu taking care of the ducks.
"Hey, Zimu, is this place still peaceful?"
"Very peaceful, a good place to stay!" Zimu nodded as it came over.
"Ling and Ming just told me that there are occasional attacks on this place..."
"I don’t know about that, I am not a divining duck, I’m a peace-seeking duck!"
"But you’re really sure this place is peaceful, right?"
"Very peaceful!" Zimu nodded again.
"Well, first-stage beasts are probably no more than small insects for a city this strong...
In that case, Zimu, we need to find a way to strengthen our fighting force!"
Fengyu thought about many things but realised that while he wanted to find a way, he couldn’t.
Zimu’s ability was unique and special but not suited for battle, and he himself only learned auxiliary spells...
"Let’s see among the other spells I have whether there is an battle-type spell..."
He sat down on a sanded tree stump, using it as a bench.
Reaching into his robe, he pulled out a slightly yellowed book.
It didn’t have a title, for it wasn’t a book.
When he opened it, several pages were loose, more like formulas rather than a book.
Indeed, this was the only inheritance his father left him. It was a spell book containing all the spells his father obtained throughout the years.
Putting away the ones he already learned – Small Rain Cloud Spell, Spiritual Absorption Spell, Vitality Recovering Spell, Bloodline Enhancement Spell and Spiritual Control Spell, there were quite a few in the book.
"Here are three more planting spells, which are the Fire Curse Spell, Earth Thickening Spell, Wood Nourishing Spell... then I actually have two more herding spells, the Egg-Inducing Spell and the Birth Nourishing Spell?"
He read the two last spells and realised that they were mostly targeted for the reproduction of chicken, but nothing spoke against using it for ducks!
"Finally, I have these few battle spells...!" he said when he looked at the last.
Only now did he realise that he hastily learned a few spells without actually putting in the effort into separating and learning different spells based on their importance.
Fortunately, at least he knew that although there might be beast attacks, there were many guards to protect him. Worst case, he would just lose a wave of ducks, which he could recover after just a month...
