Raising Ducks for Daily Rewards-Chapter 20: The cruelty of Herding
"I would like to get information into a spell and then get the spell directly, is that possible?" Fengyu stood in front of a counter. Behind him, large boards filled with papers could be seen.
Each one described shortly a mission, with a catchy title and reward –
< Long-time Purchase Order – 1 Spirit Stone Daily! >
< Delivery service, only one stone a week! >
< Breakfast service, Milk, Egg and Bread, one stone a week only! >
Every one of these was centred around carrier-work.
After all, although the cultivators working in this branch were all late-stage cultivators, they came from various backgrounds and didn’t have stable income or didn’t pursue a creation art.
Instead, they only had their cultivation and some strength.
Incompetent and cowardly, they could only take these delivery jobs.
The clerk behind the counter nodded and said, "This can be done, but this isn’t a common delivery mission.
Every village citizen has at most three chances to get an item from the Outer City Library, the general library of the Spirit Beast City. Many, if not most, first stage spells can be found in the library.
All the spells and a short description can be found in the booklets over there – the clerk handling it will help you find it.
Remember, only three items can be exchanged by a citizen!
If you want a spell, technique or something else afterward, you will have to wait until you enter the outer city’s jurisdiction."
"Thank you!" Fengyu cupped his hands in thanks and went down the floor in the hall, leading to a different room.
Paper and ink, the smell of a library.
’It feels like I’m back in high school!’ Fengyu exclaimed when he smelled it.
Back in high school when he was forced to write on paper. Sometimes in the summer, during an exam, the smell of ink hitting paper would be quite strong.
At that time, he didn’t care and focused on the paper in front of him.
Now... a feeling of nostalgia befell him, but he didn’t have the time to enjoy it.
He went to a shelf and looked at the titles of the ’booklets’ – each one was as large as a book. He couldn’t find what he was looking for at all!
Just then, a young man came forward and smiled, "What are you looking for? Do you need my help?"
"Indeed, I am looking for herding spells, specifically spells that can inhibit the procreation ability of egg-laying beasts."
"Oh? Very specific." The clerk was surprised at the detailed question.
Usually people would be secretive and tell him a general direction they wanted to read into, or their needs would be basic and wouldn’t reveal much.
"Yeah. Specifically it should be for ducks, but it’s fine if it’s a general spell for all oviparous-type beasts." Fengyu nodded casually.
As a modern man, he naturally experienced the greatness of talking about one thing casually with his friends, and suddenly seeing it all over the websites and video sites he checked out.
He doubted the supervision in the cultivation world was that strict, but a minimum record of all his orders should be kept.
In that case, even if he wanted to hide it, what was the use? He would only waste hours looking for the specific spell, gaining no benefit.
The clerk didn’t say much and just told him to follow. Soon arriving at a shelf.
Many beast-taming books could be found on this shelf, and one row seemed to be specifically arranged for herding.
Over ten large books could be found, at least three hundred pages – each page containing a spell.
It could be imagined that the amount of spells found in the library had to be endless.
Thinking about it, it made sense.
Many spells would have similar effects with a slightly different approach. Basically identical, but based on individual situations, they might fit better.
Once you understand one of them, understanding the other will be easy. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
A higher cultivator would read a lot of lower grade knowledge to more easily comprehend higher spells.
Taking out one of these books, the clerk pointed at the initial few pages, "This is the index. It details the topic of page groups, also called Chapters.
This book is focused on the procreation of herding beasts.
The first hundred pages are general purpose spells that can be used for all herding animals in the process of procreation, the second hundred details spells for mammals, and the third for oviparous beasts."
"Thank you," Fengyu thanked the man and took the book, walking to a chair and sitting down.
Soon, a maidservant brought him a cup of tea.
He had to admit the service in this place was quite good.
Looking at the spells, he first concentrated on the first hundred –
There were many, many spells, but Fengyu read over each and every one of them.
Finally, he found two spells that could be useful –
"Mother-Child Inheritance Spell, enhance the power of the birthed being by urging the mother to use more of its vitality. This spell has to be used in conjunction with vitality enhancing spells. The final result is that the child not only inherits the full power of the mother, it still contains the potential of a young beast.
By using this on herding beasts, you can gradually enhance the power and bloodline of a beast to a higher stage.
The process might be slow but the result is definitely worth it for long-time herders. One will definitely gain a unique lineage and have a small niche monopoly, though whether this monopoly is useful is another matter.
Birthing Lock Spell – simply lock and restrict the reproductive organs of a beast. This spell can be used in conjunction with reproductive organ dissolving spells to slowly fully dissolve the birthing ability of a beast. Even without it, it can be used to inhibit the reproduction of a beast for some time.
The two spells together are able to stably create non-reproducing herding beasts.
Using this combination on male beasts doesn’t have much of an effect, but using it on female beasts will allow the beast to absorb a great deal of power and retain its vitality, which usually increases the worth of female beasts by 10–30%.
Because of this increase, even after falling out of the production beast category into the slaughtering beast category, the price of that female herding beast will still be higher than that of others."
The more Fengyu read about this, the more he realised that other cultivators truly treated herded beasts the same as grass.
You can grow it as you like and farm it as you like.
The thought came and left him –
If the ducks were intelligent Spirit Beasts, then he couldn’t bring himself to such an act going against all his morals and values.
Thinking of Zimu, a frown formed.
’Treating everything as a beast to profit from... is this the danger that comes with becoming a breeder?’ he questioned himself but couldn’t answer.
But when he thought of unintelligent Wild Beasts...
He ate meat as a mortal, so he really didn’t have the right to say he couldn’t make himself do it.
