Chapter 44 -44: Is Starting a Business Reliable?
Mei Mengzhen’s predicament still concerned her studies.
She had drunk Spiritual Spring Water, which is known to enhance memory, so her memory was indeed excellent.
If she glanced at something briefly, she would remember it very clearly at the time, but a few days later she would forget. However, if she looked at it carefully, she would remember it for a very long time. Yet, although her memory had improved, her natural intelligence remained the same.
That is to say, she remembered all the content of the textbooks she had read, but her intelligence was such that comprehension was not guaranteed.
With the intelligence of a person in her thirties, she couldn’t possibly apply knowledge from senior high studies in a flexible and practical manner. Therefore, with her current amount of knowledge, she still might not be able to gain admission to a top school.
But she wasn’t in a hurry. Actually, the problem was quite easy to solve. She just needed to look at more problems, do more practice, and listen attentively in class. With her good memory, she wouldn’t need much time to catch up with the teacher’s pace. Even if her intelligence wasn’t quite up to snuff, her memory could somewhat compensate. So, the task at hand was to do and see more.
Obviously, the knowledge in textbooks was not enough for her, so extracurricular exercise books became useful.

Exercise books were essential for students of all grades, and the stationary stores at the school’s gate had piles of them, covering all subjects. In such times, there was no need to be thrifty with money. After afternoon classes, she rushed to the stationery store and bought more than ten exercise books to take home. Fan Tianyu saw her carrying a pile of things back and thought something had happened.
Fan Tianyu, already feeling guilty about the morning’s incident, immediately came out to help her carry the exercise books. However, once he saw what they were, Fan Tianyu was speechless, “High school only just started; there’s no need to be so hard on yourself.”
Mei Mengzhen was unfazed, “You have to be tough when it’s necessary, or else there won’t be another chance. After all, we only get one shot at senior year.” She didn’t want to repeat a year, and besides, their home would be demolished in a year, leaving no place to live if she had to repeat. Finishing school earlier and starting to earn money sooner was best for her and her brother. Of course, everything had to follow the proper sequence; there was no need to rush.
“You sure are sensible, but you can’t just buy stuff randomly. You need to figure out whether these exercise books are suitable for you. It would be a waste if you bought them and couldn’t even write the answers,” he remarked.
“I won’t, the answers are at the back. If I can’t write, I’ll just look at them. More writing and memorizing definitely can’t be wrong,” she responded.
Just as Fan Tianyu was about to say something else, his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller ID, pursed his lips, and said, “Hello, what do you want?”
While on the phone, Fan Tianyu placed the exercise books he had just carried onto the table, and Mei Mengzhen went to the kitchen to reheat lunch for the three of them.
However, in just a short time inside the kitchen, Mei Mengzhen managed to catch the gist of the conversation. It seemed urgent; they wanted Tianyu to join their startup as soon as possible.
Tianyu, too, was interested, but he had an obligation to take care of the kids, which meant he had to do it well and couldn’t leave them at home alone.
But Tianyu was quick-witted. They might not stay in the house, but he could take them out. As soon as he hung up the phone, he intended to discuss it with Mei Mengzhen. However, before he could even start to speak, she decisively rejected the idea without a hint of sympathy.
Fan Tianyu was quite young, and from her observations over the past few days, he seemed impulsive. She couldn’t trust him to watch the children at home, let alone let him take her brother out. The mere thought was out of the question.
Even fathers might not pay sufficient attention to their own children, much less a cousin. Mei Mengzhen expressed her distrust of Tianyu, so taking the children out was not an option.
Fan Tianyu felt somewhat disappointed, but he knew his temperament, “Alright, I won’t go. Besides, starting a business doesn’t happen overnight.”
Mei Mengzhen furrowed her brow and asked, “What kind of business are you starting anyway, that you need so many people?”—and so much money, though she didn’t ask that part aloud since they hadn’t asked for money yet.
“It’s something to do with networking,” admitted Tianyu. He had yet to check it out for himself. They had discussed it previously, but he hadn’t been involved in the follow-up, so he wasn’t entirely clear on the details.
“Something to do with? Can you really afford to be so uncertain when starting a business? Even if you don’t go in person, shouldn’t your business partners at least send you the information? Brother Tianyu, this doesn’t seem reliable. Plus, you don’t specialize in networking. The leap to entrepreneurship seems too big for you if you don’t understand it,” she chided.
Tianyu understood this, explaining, “I might not know much, but I’m not starting the business alone. Some of our team members have studied network engineering. We all believe there’s potential in this field, which is why we want to go into it. I’ve also taken a few courses in network engineering, and I really see a promising future in it. I’m not totally clueless, and I can contribute technically, so you don’t need to worry about my say in the business.”
“Are the people you’re partnering with reliable?” she probed.
“They’re my dorm mates. Our group of four was pretty close at school, with two network engineers and two economics majors. So it’s not a case of them ganging up against me. Don’t worry about it. Based on the number of your exercise books, I bet you won’t finish them in a month.”
Mei Mengzhen glanced at them, “Just over a dozen books. A book a day means I’ll be done in half a month.”
At that, Tianyu felt as if he was having trouble breathing. A book a day—what was she thinking? “I hope you can finish them.”
She would definitely finish them. School hadn’t started yet, so there weren’t that many assignments. Once the required homework was complete, she could start on the exercise books. She didn’t have to write them herself; she had assigned her brother a task too. She gave him a pair of child-safe scissors to cut out the last two pages of answers. He cut, she pasted, and after pasting, she carefully went through them from start to finish to memorize the content. She would think through the process for questions she didn’t understand. If she couldn’t figure them out, she would circle them for later consultation with the teachers at school.
Mei Mengzhen busied herself at home, and Mei Mengchen was also productive, happily helping his sister while having fun.
However, compared to the relaxed atmosphere of today, things were completely different the next day.
Tests on the first day of school meant that even the fastest students and teachers couldn’t find the time to mark papers, so the grading was postponed to the second day.
