Reborn as a Devouring Dragon with a System-Chapter 108: Farewell, Golden Dragon King
Chapter 108: Farewell, Golden Dragon King
Origin Continent,
For a moment, it felt as if doomsday had descended upon the world. The very land trembled violently, and chaos engulfed everything. Cultivators were reduced to mere mortals. The residents of the Origin Continent found themselves utterly helpless before this apocalyptic force.
This continued for a harrowing stretch before, suddenly, everything ceased—and the world returned to its previous calm. But a scar of confusion and dread had already been seared into the hearts of the people, especially the Emperors. None had expected a power so overwhelming that it could strip them of their cultivation like fleeting dust.
Fear gripped their hearts, and a veil of vigilance descended. They prayed they hadn’t offended such a force... and urgently sought to uncover the origin of this terror.
Shortly after, the Emperors stationed outside the Dragon Ruins witnessed a blinding flash of light. Those who had ventured inside were now returning—but only a quarter of them emerged, unconscious and riddled with grievous injuries.
The Emperors were shaken. Their thoughts darkened with grim realization—the cataclysm that struck the Origin Continent had likely originated from within the Dragon Ruins. They attempted to rouse the fallen, but it was futile. The wounded bore no external trauma—yet they would have to awaken on their own.
Inside the Dragon Ruins,
All was still.
Until a sharp grunt pierced the silence—Drakion stirred.
His eyes slowly opened as he scanned the area. It was barren, empty. Yet the echoes of the brutal battle remained vivid in his mind. The memory of the Abyssal Devouring Eye’s power gripped him—it had only opened five percent, yet it had utterly crushed the Dragon Eater, rendering it powerless.
But there was a price.
His lifeforce had been drained, consumed by the very weapon that secured his victory.
Drakion glanced around, searching.
No one.
"Dragon Emperor, do not worry. I have sent them all out," a familiar voice echoed.
Drakion turned swiftly. Aurithon’s figure shimmered into existence above the headless dragon statue.
"I thought you were devoured," Drakion said, his tone laced with disbelief.
"I was," Aurithon admitted, "but I separated a portion of my remnant soul before the battle. I left it within the statue—that fragment was what made this reversal possible."
He continued, "I knew it might still be alive. That’s why, by masking its vision with the very souls it had devoured, I used this soul to alter and redirect fate."
Drakion listened in silence, nodding slowly. But as his gaze wandered across the empty expanse, loneliness and stillness crept into his heart. His thoughts turned to Kaidros and the others... those who had followed him.
He had failed them.
He hadn’t been able to save them from the Dragon Eater. That grief gnawed deep into his chest.
"Is the Emperor thinking about the subjects who followed him here?" Aurithon asked softly.
Drakion nodded, his voice heavy. "They were my family... I vowed to protect them. Yet I stood powerless... watching as they were swallowed in terror and despair."
He looked up toward the heavens. The red hue of the sun had faded, replaced by a gentle golden radiance.
Aurithon chuckled lightly. "My Emperor, in every race worth running, sacrifices are inevitable. But you must not let them shatter your resolve."
He paused, a knowing smile tugging at the edge of his voice.
"Also... who said they were dead?"
When Drakion heard the words of Aurithon, he was stunned. He turned toward Aurithon, who waved his hands—and in the next moment, a vortex appeared and—
ROAR!
Drakion saw the Draconic Souls of the others flying toward him, and his heart fluttered with overwhelming joy. He couldn’t even begin to describe the happiness that surged through him.
"Kaidros."
"Blaze."
"Lizzy."
"Noctheria."
"Stryx."
"...."
Drakion called out each of their names with happiness, feeling that familiar presence—warm, irreplaceable, something no other dragon could ever match.
"How did you save them?" Drakion asked in disbelief. He had thought they were gone forever, especially after the Dragon Eater sacrificed the runes.
"Well," Aurithon began, "everything was a trap for the Dragon Eater. The soul it devoured was the epicenter of the formation I used. This caused any dragon soul it consumed after that to fall under my protection."
"But hadn’t your soul been digested by it?" Drakion asked, still surprised.
"Digested?" Aurithon laughed for a moment, voice calm yet filled with pride. "It would take hundreds of years to digest my soul. I am a Dragon King—not an ordinary one—but one who commands both light and metal."
When Drakion heard this, he smiled, deeply grateful that Kaidros and the rest hadn’t been devoured before the Dragon Eater consumed Aurithon’s soul.
"Dragon Emperor, you’d better not keep them hanging in the air, or they’ll dissipate. They’re still young dragon souls," Aurithon warned gently. Drakion responded instantly, storing them safely within his Devouring Void Stomach.
"I guess... it’s goodbye for real." Aurithon chuckled softly.
"Dragon Emperor, I hope you take care of the Dragon Statue... and the remains of my family. We Golden Dragons wield light and metal. I believe my daughter will be of great help to you—she carries my bloodline."
"Can I see her one more time?" he asked.
Drakion wasted no time, immediately bringing out the golden dragon egg.
Aurithon raised a hand, and the golden egg floated gently toward him.
"Her name is Mia," he said with a voice full of fatherly love.
"Mia, it’s time for your father to go. Support the Emperor well—and don’t chase trouble. Don’t worry... you won’t be alone. You have a new family now."
His eyes, glowing with warmth and sorrow, welled up as tears threatened to fall. The golden egg pulsed gently with light, as if it understood.
Aurithon returned the golden egg to Drakion, then looked up toward the sky.
"Darling... I’m coming to join you."
His soul radiated with golden light—
—and in the next breath, he vanished.
A whole Dragon King of a generation had completely disappeared from the universe.
How many more Dragon Kings would do the same?
