Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 82: Ch : Base Capacity Exceeded- Part 2
The night fell quickly, and Andrew called for a meeting between everyone present at the current moment. His people looked ready and attentive, but the new refugees had sour looks on their faces.
"We will need to patrol the perimeter of our base. As safe as we are with the beacon, I would still like to make sure we will not suddenly get attacked by something unknown."
Andrew informed everyone, and the complaining immediately started.
"Why should we? The system already told us that a base was a safe spot. Why should we spend more time and effort? Our old leader would have never asked us to do this."
The refugee spoke in an annoyed voice. He had now become the unspoken leader of the refugees, and he continued to show his unwavering position.
Behind him, the other refugees looked to be in agreement. The air turned tense at their words.
"Hey, think before you speak-"
Clara immediately scolded, but Andrew held his hand up to stop her before he turned to look at the refugees.
His unwavering gaze made them scared, but they refused to take a step back and held their ground against him.
"So, you do not want to pull your own weight? Then you are free to leave. This base was first occupied by us, and you were the ones who came here for help. So if you have a problem with our rules, then leave right now."
Andrew warned, and the refugees suddenly looked scared. Their eyes wavered, and the unofficial leader immediately spoke up.
"Y-You cannot do that to us. We are fellow humans, and we have our rights as well. Are you telling us to go out and die just because we don’t agree with you?"
The unofficial leader asked, his voice wavering and filled with fear. If his intention was to cast Andrew in a villainous light, then he was doing a good job.
Unfortunately, he chose the wrong group of people to mess with.
"T-That is not what he said..."
Lilianna tried to defend Andrew, but she quickly realized that nothing she said would get through to these people. She did not know what else to do, so she fell quiet.
The refugees saw this as their victory, but Seraphina and Emperor finally decided that they had had enough.
They grabbed two people each and started to drag them out. The unofficial leader looked shocked and followed them out.
"H-Hey-! What are you doing...? Let go of them-!"
He immediately asked, and the pair let go of the four people they had dragged out and threw them right in front of the barrier.
A monster immediately rushed into the protective barrier, its claws trying to get to one of the players, but failing.
"Take a good look. Currently, this barrier is what’s protecting your life. But a single intruder will become the difference between our lives and deaths. Do you still want to take it easy and not pull your weight?"
Seraphina asked, her eyes blank. She lacked all empathy for these fools at the moment, and most of the refugees understood it.
However, the unofficial leader was stubborn and refused to give in.
"Y-You cannot scare me. Y-You are just trying to get us to submit to your rule. There is no way the barrier-"
[Base capacity exceeded: 11/10]
The barrier came down, and the monster immediately grabbed a refugee and struck her stomach before pulling her back.
"S-Save me-"
The refugee yelled, her hand outstretched toward the people she considered to be on her side. But the monster’s form covered her before she could be saved, and that was the end for her.
[Base capacity: 10/10]
"W-What happened...? No way-! Is she dead? But how-!"
The other refugees fell to their knees, not believing what had just happened.
"Ah... I did not expect this base to be full when I was sent here. Thief told me that I would be safe if I made my way here and back... I did not know that this would be the price."
Monkey King’s familiar voice reached Andrew’s ears, and he turned to look at the player who stood above their cabin with a sorry expression on his face.
He quickly jumped down once he realized that his presence had been noticed. The refugees immediately pointed their swords toward the Monkey King, but he did not look worried.
"What do you want? Are you here because Thief asked you to come? What does he want?"
Emperor immediately had Monkey King at the other end of his sword, and Monkey King swallowed his nervousness as he stood still.
"Just wait a second. I told you that I am not your enemy. I came here with a proposal from Thief. He wanted to ask if you all would like to combine your base with ours. We are collecting the beacons from empty bases so that we can expand our own and make a safe place for weaker players. Your help would be appreciated."
As expected, Thief had started to plan out what he needed to do to gain people’s trust. Andrew had not expected anything else from him.
However, Andrew was not the type to look after strangers or forgo his own interests in favor of others. So there was only one answer for him to give.
"I don’t want to."
Andrew told Monkey King, and he sighed in regret.
"Thief said the same thing-that you wouldn’t agree. But I still wanted to try getting your help. Anyway, now that I have extended my invite, I should get going now. You are free to join us anytime."
Monkey King told them as he stood up to leave. But before he could, the unofficial leader of the refugees stood up.
"A-About that offer? Does it extend to us as well? Can we come with you?"
"Sorry, but we are low on beacons right now. So unless you bring your own beacon, we cannot take you in. As for Andrew, we were going to make a special exception for him because of... reasons. Again, I am sorry for your loss. I should get going."
Monkey King rejected the refugee’s plea, causing them to feel anger and embarrassment. But most importantly, they felt helpless, like no one was in their corner. They had even lost a dear friend.
"Soooo, about that patrol. I guess we should decide who will do it and when?"
Clara asked, trying to break the tension. But she quickly realized that she wouldn’t be able to do much, no matter what she did.
