Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 86: Ch : Betrayed
"I will take the next shift with Lilianna. You all should go back to sleep."
Everyone looked at Shawn as he volunteered for the next shift. He had finally come back after sulking outside for a whole hour and then just volunteered to take a midnight shift.
The refugee group gave him a worried look, but Andrew just nodded at him.
"Got it. So Lilianna and Shawn will be the third group to keep watch, and I will take the next one with Angeline. Emperor will take the last shift. Does anyone have anything to say about this schedule?"
Andrew asked as he looked around. The only ones who seemed like they had something to say were the refugees.
But in the end, they did not say anything either, and the shifts began.
Shawn tried to sleep, but he kept waking up in excitement. He was already awake when it came time for his shift, and he quickly got up.
Lilianna also woke up, but unlike him, she looked disoriented and still half-asleep. He saw this as his chance and approached her with a disarmed expression.
"Excuse me, miss. But you look rather tired. If you want, you can sleep some more. I can take care of patrolling myself for a while."
Shawn weaved a little bit of his ability into his voice to convince Lilianna. She looked disoriented and nodded.
"Alright, I will go back to sleep for now. But do wake me up in five minutes. I will patrol with you later, so make sure you wake me up..."
Lilianna closed her eyes and fell asleep. Shawn waited for a few minutes before he walked toward the beacon.
He grabbed it and pulled it away.
[Beacon has been detached. The safety barrier will go down.]
[Please replace the beacon to ensure safety.]
The system warned, and Shawn felt his heart skip a beat in fear as he looked at the message. But he quickly got over his shock and sighed.
"It will be fine. It is their own fault for not agreeing with me. For now, I should head to the leader and give him this beacon."
Shawn left the base without looking back. He did not even notice that people were looking at him.
As soon as he was out of the base’s range, Andrew took out the extra beacon he had and put it into the safety zone.
[Beacon has been restored.]
[Base capacity restored.]
"Tsk, so that stupid idiot betrayed us after all. What do you want to do about it, Andrew?"
Seraphina asked as she opened her eyes. Andrew narrowed his eyes as well and quickly thought about what they should do.
In the end, he only had one solution.
"I will go and get our beacon back. You all should stay here and look after the base-"
"I-I will go as well. This all happened because of me, so I will come with you as well."
Angeline proposed while shaking. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
She had woken up just as Shawn had tried to take the base beacon and flee. She had tried to stop him, but failed to do that.
Her regret was clear on her face, and she looked determined to go after Shawn. Andrew had a feeling that Angeline would follow after him, even if he told her no.
So it was just saving himself a headache to allow her to come with him.
"Fine, you can follow me for now. But make sure not to let your emotions get the better of you, no matter what you see."
Andrew warned Angeline, and she looked relieved and gave him a reassured glance.
"Don’t worry. I promise I will not hold you back, and I will also follow your orders."
Angeline got up and followed him out.
Both Lilianna and Clara made motions to stand up as well, but Andrew shook his head.
"You all should stay here and protect our base. I will be back soon."
Lilianna looked like she wanted to stop Andrew, but in the end, she gave up as well and just nodded to let him go.
Andrew quickly rushed toward the location Angeline was pointing toward, and they reached it just in time for Shawn to hand the beacon over to his ’leader.’
"I-I brought you the beacon, leader. Everyone else did not want to come. Tsk, they are so ungrateful to have someone amazing like you looking out for them, but I am different. I will never betray you and follow someone else-"
A sword pierced Shawn’s middle, and he looked beyond shocked. He turned his eyes toward his leader and whispered.
"L-Leader, what is...?"
But a small smile was his reward before his leader opened his mouth inhumanly wide and ate the beacon.
"Y-You are not... leader..."
Shawn realized this too late, but by now, he had started to lose his consciousness. He was sure he was going to die.
But weirdly enough, all he felt was a numbness he had never felt before.
"Shawn, don’t die. Pull yourself together-"
Angeline yelled, and the monster that had taken her leader’s form turned on her next. She braced herself for being attacked, but a barrier covered her form, thus saving her life.
The next second, a spell clashed against the monster, causing it to stagger.
"Y-You-!"
Shawn tried to speak, but his words felt like chalk. His lips were moving, but no sound came out. In the end, he closed his eyes and fell asleep forever.
"No-! Shawn, don’t die-!"
Angeline yelled as she reached his body, but it was too late. Her friend was already gone due to his own foolishness.
While this exchange was taking place, Andrew distracted the monster.
He had a feeling that this fight was not going to be easy now. The swallowing of the beacon seemed to have given the monster a little more power than he expected.
[Shapeshifter (level 30)]
[Warning: Be careful of its claws before it has paralysing properties.]
The monster attacked, and Andrew dodged.
He was currently not able to fight at full strength because he was protecting Shawn’s dead body and Angeline with his barrier. But as much as he wanted to drop it, he had a feeling they would die the second he did that.
So he had no choice but to fight with a handicap at the moment.
